The greatest minds of our time blessed us with the wonderful technology of texting, making communication faster, easier, and more convenient than ever. What they couldn’t bless us with, however, is the ability to think before we speak—or, in this case, type. And judging by certain people’s messages, that’s a skill we could all use a little more of.
The Instagram page Down Bad Comments collects some of the funniest and most awkward text exchanges out there. We’ve rounded up their best finds below. Scroll down to check them out and prepare for a healthy dose of secondhand embarrassment.

Texting has become such a normal part of our lives that it’s hard to imagine a time when it didn’t exist. However, the technology is relatively young, with the first text message sent on December 3, 1992.
It was written by a 22-year-old British engineer named Neil Papworth, who used a computer to send a simple “Merry Christmas” to a colleague’s mobile phone. Little did he know how much his invention would change the way people communicate.
Since then, texting has come a long way. We can now send messages through countless apps, including WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, making it easier than ever to stay in touch.
To put its popularity into perspective, WhatsApp alone handles over 100 billion messages worldwide on a typical day, while global SMS traffic is estimated at around 18 billion messages daily.
Solid joke setup, but humor against your audience requires a pre-existing relationship. Hopefully this a joke from a close friend as opposed to a stranger amusing themselves at someone else's expense.
Younger generations seem particularly fond of texting, often preferring it to a traditional phone call. A 2026 YouGov survey found that 65% of Gen Z respondents in Britain preferred texting, instant messaging, or emailing when contacting friends and family.
Only 17% preferred making a phone call, compared to 62% of Baby Boomers. In fact, 69% of young adults keep their phones on silent most days.
With all those messages flying around, it’s hardly surprising that misunderstandings happen. Even something as small as punctuation can change how we interpret a text.
For example, short messages ending with a period tend to come across as less sincere than those without one. Just think about the difference between “Okay” and “Okay.” Can you feel it?
Emojis, with all their different facial expressions and colorful little symbols, are supposed to help us express our emotions more clearly, but they can also leave plenty of room for confusion.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota discovered that people often interpret the same emoji differently. Even the device someone uses can affect how an emoji looks and what emotion it seems to convey. That might explain why a perfectly innocent message occasionally gets taken the wrong way.
Sometimes, though, the problem has nothing to do with how a message is interpreted. It simply ends up in the wrong inbox.
A 2025 YouGov survey found that 39% of American adults had accidentally sent a sensitive message to the wrong person at least once. Another 17% admitted to making that mistake multiple times, which probably resulted in a few uncomfortable conversations.
Interestingly, accidental texts aren’t always accidents. In a survey of more than 1,000 people, one in five respondents admitted to deliberately sending a message to the wrong person just to start a conversation.
Among those who had tried this trick, around 60% said the intended recipient was someone they were romantically interested in. Raise your hand if you’ve ever tried this move yourself.
Maybe I should take screenshots of when I play the Sims and use that as my profile pic
Still, even with the occasional misunderstanding or embarrassing mistake, texting remains one of the easiest ways to keep in touch. And while nobody particularly enjoys being on the receiving end of an awkward message, these little mishaps can make for pretty entertaining stories later.
At least we can take comfort in knowing that we’re all capable of sending something ridiculous from time to time. Hopefully, the next embarrassing screenshot making the rounds online won’t be ours.
Yeah, the reactions in some messages don't have the same meaning as what it looks like. I had someone get mad at me because I "liked" a message when it gave the thumbs-up reaction, which I had meant to be an acknowledgement of something.
I love the "delivered quietly" part. I know what it means, but my brain immediately thought they whispered the whole 40 minute dialogue
Wonder if they had eaten dinner in that timespan and chilled out lol
I got to 35 and then stopped because I kept thinking "what the f***k is wrong with people, we are doomed..."
So Dr Elliot Reid on Scrubs can say fri'ck but I can't. Noted.
Load More Replies...The grammar was the most awkward parts of these... And the fact that at least 90% of these conversations never have taken place.
