On the sidewalk, mid-century end tables share space with old Chinese medicine cabinets. Down the street, antique chests patiently wait with vintage vinyls, paintings, and — oh yes — gorgeous motorcycles for new owners to come and pick them up. Because all of them are, surprisingly, free. One person's trash is another person's treasure, anyway, and strolling among streetside castoffs can sometimes lead to wonderful hidden gems.
Over recent years, stooping or curb mining — spotting discarded goods sitting out on the curbsides — has really taken off with scavenging enthusiasts looking for cheap and environmentally friendly ways to fill their homes with exciting treasures. And here's where the online group called 'Curbfinds' comes in. A community dedicated to sharing dwellers' best discoveries and giving bonus points to anyone if they "fix something that was broken, upcycle it, or recycle it."
Below, we've wrapped up a collection of some of their best posts, and it’s hard to believe what friendly strangers leave lying on the sidewalk! So continue scrolling, hit upvote on your favorite ones, and be sure to let us know if you've ever scouted out a great find in the comments.

I Run Down An Old Dirt Road. Trash Is Dumped There. One Day I Stopped And Found A Box Of Money
All the envelopes are different countries all over the world. Mostly date from the 1700s-1900s. The oldest is a coin from 1621. I’ve got some from countries that no longer exist. I’m still researching
Nice. You should make your own BP post with close up photos of the different bills

My Boss Was Getting Rid Of Some Things From His Mother's Estate And Brought A Bunch Of Stuff In With An Up For Grabs Sign In Our Conference Room. It Was Mostly Junk, Except For These Original Dalí Etchings
Read the original thread. Says they are worth a few hundred at most as Dali cranked these out by the bushel. They also did tell their boss who said it was OK to keep them.
Alas is true. I have one I thought my father had done, turns out it is a Dali. I got excited only to learn its cool, but isn’t going to be the retirement plan boost I hoped for! 😂
Load More Replies...It’s safe to say that the 'Curbfind' group is changing people's attitudes toward giving new life to tossed furniture. The subreddit was originally launched in May 2020 and has gained over 12.6k devoted members sharing their unexpected finds with the community. It’s home to countless photos of people stumbling upon things people no longer need for others to enjoy.
So if you think there’s still a stigma around picking up discarded goods lying on the edge of the sidewalk, this page is getting rid of it one post at a time. A brief scroll through this list proves it’s virtually impossible to predict what will pop up on a curb in your city. In fact, these unlikely places seem to be treasure troves filled with exciting items ranging from beautiful furniture to electronics to the most insignificant things that are bound to bring their new owners joy.
Hand-Carved Vintage Liquor Cabinet!
Thank god you got to this first! I shudder at how many people would give it a "makeover"

Before And After Of A Cabinet I Found In The Trash
Ooh, I would love to see it with the original wood grain showing
Love how you restored it! Love the paper in the back of the cupboards
What an improvement. I would never have guessed that this cabinet could be brought to look so great.
It’s no secret that most people face an overwhelming accumulation of stuff, but members of this community are turning their unwanted valuables into money-saving treasures, grabbing unwanted pieces to decorate their homes and improve their lives. They obviously embrace the three Rs in environmental responsibility: reduce, reuse, and recycle.
See, stoopers contribute the environmental benefits of buying less new stuff and rescuing furniture, electronics, toys, and much more from a trip to the landfill. And as recent research has found out, they also feel a sense of satisfaction because of it.
Removed Layers Of Old Paint And Rust From This Mid-Century End Table
I know right, looks like marble, I can't even imagine painting over that!
Load More Replies...It takes a special kind of person to paint over that and consider it an improvement. Absolutely gorgeous in its original form.
You are making me imagine them as little pizza tables. I used to collect those because I thought they were cool

That is so cute. Whoever made that. Was good at what they did. Took a lot of time and effort.

A Curbfind Dresser... With A New Bit Of Paint!
I usually like wood unpainted but in this case, the gradient is really lovely.
Load More Replies...Not loving the coloring at all but nice find for free. I'm sure someone would love that color (looks like nail polish, lol) Get it back to a nice wood stain and put some nice pulls on it and it could be great.
I absolutely hate the current fashion of painting over lovely wood, but I forgive this one--it is beautiful.
Does anyone know how to reach the artist who created this stunning paint job? I would ordinarily, 999 times out of 1000 say that anyone who paints furniture has a reserved spot in hades, but this is - PERFECTION. I have never seen anything like this in my life. Stunning. Message me please!
A study by Sabrina Helm and her team at the University of Arizona looked at how consumer choices affect well-being. They found that reduced consumption — repairing or reusing things rather than buying replacements — is not only better for the planet but also makes people happier.
"Reduced consumption is more novel and probably more important from a sustainability perspective," Helm said, adding that it "has effects on increased well-being and decreased psychological distress."
According to Helm, having less and buying less can actually make people more satisfied. Because if you buy a lot of new objects, you also have a lot on your mind. "Maybe you have a lot of debt because you bought all that stuff, and now you have to manage all that stuff. It requires maintenance and being organized. It's not like you buy it and you're done with it," Helm said.
Curb Find Of The Century? Kitchen Aid Professional 5 Plus Stand Mixer With Attachments, And It Works!
That's an AWESOME find! Those things are not cheap! Way to go! 😯🙂
Load More Replies...of course it works. those things would be the only thing aside from cockroaches to survive nuclear holocaust.
Wow that's a great find, for sure. Especially without any defects (honestly even if it was scratched up etc it would be a great find, lol). They go for 300+ on amazon.
I've aways wanted one. But those things are expensive maybe someday I'll find one on the curb in trash.
I own two Sunbeam mixers like this. I only paid a few bucks a piece for them. Both made in the 1950s. They last forever. The modern made ones are not made as well. Still a great find.

I Spent The Day Making Memories With My Daughter And Her Curb Find. Was Quoted Over $1000 To Repair The Broken Side And Reupholster. For The Price Of Our Time, Some Glue, Screws, Staples, And Fabric, She Now Has Something In Her Bedroom She Absolutely Loves
I actually love the before fabric, more unique than whatever that beige stuff is lol
Maybe the daughter is 14/15 and dosnt like pink, my 12yo wants her room cream with sage green, shes sooo over pink 🙈
I learned how to reupholster furniture years ago. So happy for you - it's lovely.
But if you’ve ever started putting random household items on the sidewalk in hopes they’d disappear, you must wonder about these passerby scavengers who are happy to bring your possessions home. Well, Blu Dot, a furniture maker based in Minneapolis, did a "Real Good Experiment" in 2009 to find out what would happen if they left 24 designer chairs equipped with GPS tracking technology on the streets of New York.
Although the experiment served as a marketing campaign for the chairs, the researchers delved deeper into the curb mining phenomenon by adding hidden notes and asking the takers to be interviewed. "The key to this idea was involvement," Michael Hart, founder of branding firm Mono, said. "Not just them taking the chairs, but the whole community with this notion of an experiment and 'Where will the chairs go?'"
So Jonathan Levine, a veteran curb miner, noticed the chair and said it was too good to be there. He and his son have been stooping for several years, and some of their valuable finds include a pay phone, keyboard, and a working printer. "We see fax machines and printers all the time," he said. "There's also more competition since the recession began."
1922 Sewing Machine
they really don't make things like they used to. this sewing machine is made with love. look at the gold detailing on it. that was handcrafted beautifully! now, if i look up sewing machine on amazon, it's just a white plastic box with no love put into it.
These were made to last. Only a few parts ever go bad & they are very easy to fix or restore.

Curb Alert. Someone Posted A Curb Alert Near Me And I Saw Two Mid Century Looking Dressers In The Corner. I Am Still In Awe
I don't like painted wood as much as seeing the woodgrain, but someone else can enjoy their painted furniture.A) Paint can be remove, B) Paint might even help protect a piece from water, and dings.
Load More Replies...so pretty! maybe paint the drawers a nice MCM (mid-century modern) color to add some fun!
You don't paint these unless you want to turn them into gargage.
Load More Replies...Why is so much mid century modern on here? I guess people's tastes change?
From the way these are staged, they're to be sold, for those interested.
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE HAVE ALL THE LUCK?! I clearly live in the wrong town!
Looking through other people’s trash and nabbing used objects isn’t new. But competition in the curb mining business has been fierce for quite some time now. Over the past few years, stooping has become so widespread that it has attracted thousands of aficionados who transformed what used to be a niche activity into a phenomenon.
I Whipped My Car Around So Fast. If There Wasn’t A Sign That Said “Free” I’d Have Felt Like It Was Stealing

I had one just like this (I now have a 7' tall box after decades of buying tools). I gifted it to my neighbors son who is working on his first car. He loves it.
It's a Craftsman tool chest. Highly prized for those in the know.

Found This Cedar Chest A Few Days Ago
It was a custom for a young girl to be given a chest like that one. She would fill up with household goods that she would need when she got married. I had friends who had Hope Chests. She would put things like sheets or china. She was often given household goods for a birthday, Christmas or whenever they were on sale. The chest was referred to as her Hope Chest. I never got a Hope Chest. My dad was more interested that I would get a good education. I was told at the ripe old age of 4 that I was going to college and that was that. Btw, I grew up in Southern Indiana in the 50's and 60's. Also, I was the only girl in my class that got a college degree. In fact, I was so impressed with my father's words at the tinder age of 4 that I got 3 college degrees. I got 2 bachelors and a masters. I never got a Hope Chest but I did get a good education which served me well throughout my life.
My father bought his mother--my grandma--one when he was 14, in 1949, interestingly the year my mom was born. I got this when Grandma passed in 1997. It's one of my most cherished items. It is full of the stuff he wanted to keep of his mama's "stuff." All of it is still inside it--just because--and even more so now that my father also passed in 2013. I wouldn't take all the money in the world for it.
My parents bought my sister a Lane cedar chest back in 1971 as a wedding gift. I think it cost them $400 in 1971. We now own it.
Oh wow. A Lane! My mother told me these were *the* brand to have as a hope chest. Just be sure to have the lock modified with an internal safety release. I managed to score one as a teen at a yard sale, but it took a lot of work to revive. They are great for storing bedding.
But how does one become a good sidewalk sleuth? How can you know when you spot a quality piece before committing? The New York Times spoke with several expert stoopers who let curious readers into the nooks and crannies of their craft.
First, not only where you look, but also when is crucial. The end of the month as well as the weekends are always good times to go on a hunt, with people throwing out windfalls of unwanted stuff. For example, a writer and skilled scavenger P.J. Gach likes to pass luxury buildings in the early morning because exciting items usually land there before trucks come to collect them.
Found A Bag Of Art Supplies In A Big Pile Of Junk Outside An Apartment
Most was too bad to be salvaged. But still scored a nearly complete set of watercolor pencils, acrylic paints, brushes, and bonus Louis Vuitton sunglasses
I'm sorry but is anyone else's OCD not handling the order those pencils are in?
Pity someone would give up on drawing/painting and give the set away :( If I could draw, I'd hold on to it for dear life.
Actually it's a kind of base. Like... Imagine you're drawing a bubble. Different colors on all sides, slowly moving in. Now use a wet brush and it all melds seamlessly.

I don't like the colour either but it's gorgeous otherwise. My mom used to do upholstery for a living, decades ago, she might be able to recover it in a beautiful Colbalt blue or something. Mustard yellow has never made sense to me as a colour in fashion or furniture. Only as a colour for the condiment.
Load More Replies...We used to have two of these chairs (except ours were a hideous green) in my parents' house when I was growing up. One set in a corner by the window and I spent countless in that chair reading everything. Oh! This brings back so many wonderful, warm, and cozy feelings. I would love to fins one of these.
Wow gorgeous chair, colour is amazing as some old chairs have hidious coverings...
Then, it’s critical to investigate the quality of the piece. Bronwyn Tarboton, an actor with a dumpster-diving social media account, explained it’s best to pull out your phone and do a quick search if you’re unsure of the item’s state. "That way you can see how much something is worth, how much things are selling for," Tarboton said.
When it comes to furniture, "dovetail joinery on the drawers is a sign of real craftsmanship. A heavy item is likely better quality and sturdier than a light one. Check to see if it’s wobbly, and if the legs are in good condition." Most importantly, don’t forget to check for signs of bedbugs — "look along the seams for dark spots."
Some Mom Stepped On Her Last LEGO…
Ooooh we did something like that :D We were 4 kids and had several huge tubs full of legos. We gifted it to the little son of a friend, who had severe ADHD. The mother called us the next day crying, telling us that that was the first time that her son had been calm and concentrating on one thing for an entire afternoon. He built legos all over the floor for hours
I’m ADD and I’m pretty sure my eldest son is and about the only time we can both sit and not be overstimulated is with legos or megablocks. Mega locks because I also have a 2 year old, he has been good about not trying to put everything in his mouth but I’m not going to risk it.
Load More Replies...We have a huge box of lego. It started with my older sisters lego, she was born in 1956, so there’s some original lego in there. Then my brother’s lego (born 1960), then mine (1971). It stayed ay my parents house when we all moved out, and then our children all played with it when we visited. My parents passed so the box came to me as I had the youngest children (who were still kids). Now they are adults and their lego sets have been added to the box. Just waiting for grandkids now to play with it. Hopefully it gets passed along to each new generation for a while
Hey parents, it can be very traumatic to your kids if you give or throw their toys away. So if you do that, don't be surprised when you end up left to rot in a cut rate nursing home like on Happy Gilmore.
When I was a kid a neighbour had a garage sale and there was a big box of Lego (at 20 year old pieces) for $50. My parents couldn't usually afford that much but somehow they had the money to buy it. My brother and I played with it for years, often fighting over particular pieces. Then we decided in our late teens to split it between us. After I left home, for some reason, I decided to give him my half of it and I have regretted it ever since!

Load More Replies...Fleetwood Mac is such a good artist, as well as Abba and Michael Jackson.
Moreover, she always comes equipped with a backpack or a tote bag and a screwdriver, "in case she needs to disassemble an item to get it home. A tape measure helps, too, so you don’t end up bringing home a dresser that won’t fit through the door or up the stairs."
And lastly, familiarize yourself with stooping etiquette (yes, it exists!) One thing to look out for is missing drawers, they may be a sign of someone coming back for the rest of the piece later. Then make sure the item is clearly on the curb, otherwise it’s off-limits. And if other enthusiasts are already exploring the object you stumbled upon, they have first dibs. But if you were the one to spot it yet no longer feel interested in pursuing it further, let other people know. "Remember, something else is going to be down the road," Gach said. "There are thousands of leaning bookcases begging to be adopted."

A Week Ago I Was Talking About How I Wished I’d Find A Snowboard In The Trash Because I’m A Broke Beginner Who Always Has To Borrow From Friends
The other night I found three on the curb! Thanks, trash day!
Lol I got into a bit of an argument with someone here on BP because they were saying how skiing is a 'rich people's sport'. So I wrote back that it really wasn't, it's a matter of finding deals. I was able to find all of my equipment for free or close to it and I felt like they didn't believe me. See it does happen! I got everything from curb finds or yard sales where I got it for like 5 dollars. You can do it on the cheap, lol.
It's not so much the equipment, but rather the cost of the lift tickets and the cost of gas to get you there and back. It costs $150 to $200 a day for tickets and gas.

Wall unit for free a couple years ago. I remind you for free. Everyone who responded wanted me to deliver it for free. Somebody came and saw it and asked if I would hold it till the end of the week so they could come and pick it up with their friends truck. I agree. At the end of the week I didn't hear from them they never came and picked it up and when I called them they said they changed their mind but never bothered to let me know. In the end my son and I broke it down into pieces and took it to the dump.

This Luxury Dog Crate Was Being Thrown Out By Someone In My Building Who Couldn’t Keep Their Puppy
Im só in need of One of those right now lol, i have a couple of cats, not yet neutered, and the male is starting to have insestuous thoughts about his sister ( same litter kittens ), and that would be a perfect " horny jail " for him untill this friday, he's getting " lighter " this friday.
Why couldn’t they keep their puppy? I’m going to upset myself now imagining all the horrible scenarios that could have happened.
It doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing. At the beginning of 2020, someone's sister's, cousin's, friend had been out of work for several months and was struggling. A mutual acquaintance mentioned their friend was looking to rehome their pup due to financial difficulties, and the rest is history. I had lost my service dog, Big Sally, a few months prior, and was having a tough time. The little guy needed a home, I needed a buddy, and it worked out perfectly.😁 Now he has his service dog certs, and he even got an award from the local shelter for his love of being a "substitute mom" to bottle kittens. Super happy ending 🌈❤

Lol i've seen grills left in the trash because a dangerous animal was found nesting in it over winter and they'd rather just throw it out than to deal with the animal or the cleaning it would take to make it sanitary again. But if you want to put in the work, why not?

We tried to get it but between my lack of muscle and his torn muscle in his shoulder, there was no way we could get it in the hatch back of our car. I was so sad, but at least someone got a beautiful new to them grill

Fainting couch. Lovely. My only worry with upholstered items put on the curb is what decides to move into them once they’re there. Of course, the OP must’ve inspected it, as it doesn’t look reupholstered. Besides, I love the deep red velvet.
If you insist....I will come nap on you as soon as I get out of work, chaise. Now let me do some work.
College Moveout Is The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
I was shocked after I graduated college and was the last one out of the dorms - people left SO much stuff behind. (I lived in an all Senior dorm, so everyone who lived there had just graduated and were not coming back for any of their items) I was moving to my first apartment so it worked out well for me!
I live a block from a university campus and I always track when move-out day is happening. Last year I scored a beautiful contemporary loveseat which looked like new.
Did...Did the students think they'd never use toilet paper again after moving out?
Well its not cost effective to fly home with TP. Just buy more. I used to move alot and every apt place would let you dump your household stuff. And at the next place we would pick up what others throw out.

My dad made his own wooden ones. Had them on 3 walls in his workshop. When he died in August we found someone to clear it out but instead of recycling the cabinets they were all burnt.
OOhh I would be so happy to get this. I make jewelry and I have so many bags of wire and beads hanging around. I've gotten some containers at the dollar store but I started looking online for something like this so that I can label and categorize them. But they're suuuper expensive and too heavy for me to try and carry up my apartment stairs.
Curb Trash To Home Treasure
We can see in the first picture that it's not wood, just a laminated finishing. So staining wasn't going to work anyway. Painting is a good solution.
Might been easier if the original had damage. I have a vintage furnitures myself where I might paint one due to water damage on top as I have no idea how to fix it and I live in no where do cant send it to experts either.

Hampton Bay Trash Find
You know, I've always preferred to buy quality outdoor furniture for my kitchen table/chairs because it's always so much cheaper than shopping in the kitchen section, it's more durable and generally more comfortable. With a little bit a money, you can replace all of the cushions whenever you want without worrying what you bought won't match/get stained. If you're looking for a nice table and chairs, and you're on a tight budget, try looking in the clearance section around this time of year for summer outdoor furniture. In some cases, you'll get some amazing looking things that no one would even know were outdoor. In the picture listed you can tell because it's metal all around but you can get some nice wood ones, too.

Scored This Great Moon And Stars Mirror
Why can't I ever find hidden treasures like this sitting on curbs in my city?? I am kind of jealous of these finds lol.
Did a kitchen remodel a few months ago. My wife asked if we'd donate the sink we took out. I was like "so they can charge someone $50? Nah, I'm putting this by the road." Put a sign on it, set everything out by the driveway (faucet included), went too the store and it was gone when we got back. Why let a for profit thrift store make money when someone else really needs it?
I'd like to see the other side of the 'curbside finds' coin all about things left outside and taken while the owners were taking the rest of their new purchases into their homes. Example: 'Had a sofa and armchair delivered. We carried the chair up to our apartment, came down to find the sofa had gone'. Mind you, it would be adding insult to injury if it went on to say 'and the next time we saw it, it was a feature on 'curbside finds'.
I never thought about that. Some of them just might be stuff waitingto be moved in to the owners home

I think it was for dress-up clothes or something, because it's not real wood. I was sure I would open it to find it gross, but it was perfectly clean and in great condition.
Not exactly a curb find but I bought this chair for $50 from a guy who had just pulled it out of a dumpster. It's by Pedro Friedeberg (the guy who made the giant hand-shaped chairs in the 1960s). I sold it through an auction house for $5000.00 (went back to try the dumpster guy but was not able to) chair1-634...6565f3.jpg
I’m from the UK and I just can’t understand this leaving furniture outside thing. How do people with disabilities negotiate around all this stuff? And what happens when it rains or if nobody wants the huge old wardrobe? Seems so weird to me - our charity shops collect big items and occasionally someone may leave a few tiles, etc, outside for passers by - but not whole dining suites!
Some people have all the luck! And I'm mad! I'm searching for furniture for my house and going on websites and checking everywhere I can think of yet some people just give things away! Though apparently they aren't doing it where I live.
