Pregnant Daughter Decides To Put Dad’s Cat In A Shelter Because Of Her Baby’s Safety, Gets Kicked Out

People tend to get attached to their pets, double so if it’s a rescue one has had around since it was tiny. But for family members who, for one reason or another, don’t have this connection, the animal might be an annoyance, which can all culminate in a conflict that once more reinforces the importance of good boundaries.

A man turned to the internet for advice when he discovered that his pregnant, adult daughter secretly took his elderly cat to a shelter because it, in her mind, would be a risk to the baby. Naturally, he was not entirely happy about this. We reached out to him via private message and will update the article when he gets back to us.

It can be hard to set good boundaries with grown up children

After retrieving his cat and paying the shelter fee, the father gave his daughter one month to find new housing. Now family members are calling him heartless, saying he’s prioritizing a pet over his child and potentially condemning her to homelessness during a vulnerable time. The situation raises uncomfortable questions about entitlement, boundaries, and what happens when adult children living at home make unilateral decisions about their parents’ lives. The issue isn’t simply that an adult lives with parents or that parents help their children when needed. The problem arises when that adult child is not autonomous and has no desire to be, when they’re unable to solve problems independently and demand that parents take responsibility for them. In this case, the daughter didn’t ask her father about rehoming his beloved pet. She simply decided and acted, treating his home and his possessions as her own to dispose of as she saw fit.

Creating healthy boundaries with adult children maintains parental sanity and helps them confront the realities of adulthood without relying on parents as rescuers. If parents try to save their adult child every time they’re in trouble, they may be making things worse in the long run. The daughter’s assumption that her father would simply accept losing his cat reveals a deeper pattern. She expected accommodation without discussion, resolution without compromise. When challenged, she couldn’t provide a single instance of the cat behaving aggressively, yet continued insisting on her unfounded fears.

Some adult children don’t feel like guests in their parents’ home, and that’s often where problems start. They may have a sense of entitlement about what parents should do for them and what they deserve. The father’s response, giving his daughter a month to leave, wasn’t about choosing a cat over his child. It was about refusing to accept that his property, his companion, and his life decisions could be overridden by someone living in his home. Having clear boundaries encourages adult children to be responsible for their own lives. By setting limits, parents ultimately help them make their own decisions, solve their own problems, and learn from their experiences. The daughter is pregnant and divorcing, circumstances that undoubtedly make finding housing difficult. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible, and more importantly, her challenging situation doesn’t grant her authority over her father’s household decisions.

When parents enable their child well into adulthood, they may think they’re helping them, but they may actually be holding them back or increasing their sense of entitlement and turning them into entitled adult children. Had the father simply accepted the situation, retrieved his cat quietly, and said nothing, he would have communicated that his daughter’s comfort takes precedence over his own attachments and that unilateral decisions about his life are acceptable. Parents can set boundaries regarding personal choices while still showing respect for an adult child’s autonomy and decision making. Parents do not have control over an adult child’s choices, but they can set boundaries when adult children are in the parent’s presence or home Healthline. The daughter is free to avoid cats in her own home. She’s free to raise her child however she chooses once that child arrives. What she’s not free to do is dictate which living beings her father keeps in his own house.

Managing adult kids at home can be complicated

About one in three Americans between ages 18 and 34 live with their parents, with adult children increasingly staying in the family home for longer or returning after living independently due to changing economic circumstances including the increasing cost of living. This trend makes boundary setting more crucial than ever. When multiple generations share space, clarity about authority and respect becomes essential to preventing resentment and conflict.

It’s important that parents and children continue to have open and honest ongoing conversations as they live together because issues and challenges are inevitable. If there are consistent boundary crossings, if parents feel anxious and stressed most of the time about the living arrangement, and begin to feel angry and resentful, these are signs that something needs to change. The father’s anger wasn’t really about the cat, though he clearly loves the animal. It was about the violation of trust and respect that the act represented.

Setting boundaries and limits with adult children will contribute to the good health of the relationship and minimize conflicts in the home. When adult children are living under the same roof as parents, critical areas of conflict need to be negotiated. The father offered his daughter housing during a difficult transition. She responded by making a major decision about his life without consultation.

The grandmother and other family members arguing that the daughter should come before a cat are missing the point entirely. This isn’t about ranking family members against pets. It’s about respecting the person providing the home. The daughter’s pregnancy and divorce are unfortunate circumstances, but they don’t erase her responsibility to treat her father’s home and possessions with respect. Sometimes the most loving thing a parent can do is refuse to enable entitled behavior, even when doing so creates short term discomfort. The message the father sent was clear: living in his home is a privilege that comes with expectations of basic respect, and those expectations apply regardless of age or circumstances.

YTAs can go suck a hot exhaust pipe. Daughter should get rid of the kid, if anything. She has no money, no support, except leaching from parents, no home. How is having a child sensible? The world is already overpopulated.

If anyone, ANYONE, tried to fùck with my cats like this, I would go completely scorched earth with them. And I have grandkids. This just reeks of the older daughter being mummy's little angel if the mother was that willing to go along with this ridiculous scheme. For the people screaming about the daughter being 'on the streets', I hardly think it would get to that point, she has 30 days to make arrangements. And the father isn't the cruel one here. As one person very correctly brought up, older 'grumpy' cats almost never get adopted & poor Leut would have probably died in the shelter.

Leeches off her father and "just so" decides to give away his cat. That child should go into adoption for its own sake, nothing good can come out of growing up with such a person as a mother.

Daughter dated then married a deadbeat—-THEN got pregnant by him on top of it! She is 26 years old, not 15. This is HER life that she’s going to have to live because of HER decisions, all made while she was an ADULT. She made her bed, now she has to sleep in it. Right now, that bed is in her parents’ house, so she does not get to make the rules, including who does and does not live there—-and that includes pets. If daughter had been smart and made better choices in life, she wouldn’t be in this pickle right now, so she needs to sit TF down, shut TF up, and count her blessings. She’s lucky AF that she has parents who are willing to upheave their own lives to help her out, and to help her with the baby she shouldn’t have conceived with her deadbeat husband, on whom she cannot rely for anything, including consistent child support payments, ever again. What a brat.

Being pregnant isn't an excuse to be a shítty entitled little brat. A mature adult, having concerns, would have, oh, I don't know, TALKED to the people who were kind enough to let her back into their home and explained her concerns and come up with an acceptable compromise. Going behind her dad's back like that automatically makes her a shítty person. And maybe she should put her child up for adoption because she's clearly not mature enough to raise a child

Doing that to an old cat is legit a psychopath move. Also, I just wish some of the the YTA troglodytes replace "cat" with LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE even an object. The abject disrespect of what they did is enough to warrent his reaction. NOW back to the cat again and the jarring crucial part... She is a harmless, medically well taken care of old cat. Why create this hypothetical scenario where the cat needs to suffer because of the incoming baby? I mean, the insane leaps being done here that seem to force this... That is why I think it is a psycho move. It is the daughter's way of hurting someone/something, cus she hates her own life right now. If this was a JUST "power move" to see how much of the household she can control using the pregnancy... That can be done without inflicting pain on a helpless animal... One that you know your father loves dearly... If I was the dad and hopefully the mom too, I would be thinking of keeping the grandkid safe too... From his own mom...

Wow, i'd never forgive anyone who tried to get rid of my pet, what an awful thing to do, the wife and daughter both come across as a**holes in this story. The fact that he keeps replying to comments about his wife saying that she just believed the daughter was telling her "objective facts" that she believed without thinking seems really weird to me. It makes her sound dumb and doesn't explain why she just let the daughter remove the cat without at least talking to her husband about it first. The daughter definitely comes across as an a**hole and seems like she deliberately waited until her dad was out of the house to execute her plan to get rid of the cat by manipulating her mum because she knew her dad would say no. The wife just comes across as a thoughtless idiot who was easily manipulated and didn't stop to think 'maybe I should discuss this with my husband before making any decisions.'

Just as the decision about pets needs to be everyone's, I do think the decision to kick out the daughter should be up to both parents I think the daughter should leave but what is going on with the wife? Her presence doesn't matter in the story, it's like she was added in as an after thought. OP should kick them both out, what a weird, uncaring and unthinking person he's married to he says its out of character to just go along with the daughter but then she just goes along with her husband?

first of all older cats are not a threat i would be mode concerned about a younger more curious cat with a lot of energy but then again not really a threat cats can be trained . Second of all i am sure they knew how attached the dad was to the cat. They should have talked to him about it before taking his pet to the shelter. Imagine this cat feeling lost and abandon wondering what she did wrong . This story breaks my heart in the sense that people think pets are garbage and can just discard them . Good for the dad for getting his buddy back. and standing his ground I have a cat Shes sassy , and stubborn and only acknowledges me when she wants her morning treat. there are special occasions she will cuddle with me . ( she loves my husband more lol ) hunt down the person who took her, so would her doggo big sister they have a special bond and life would not be the same for that person ,

As someone who was forced to give up a cat because of a baby, NTA, the daughter should have voiced her concerns to dad before she got rid of the cat, and this would have opened up a civil discussion about what the family can do to make sure daughter feels that the baby will be safe around the cat. Also, toxoplasmosis is a thing, but unless the daughter was changing the litter box while pregnant and so long as dad is making sure kitty's paws are clean, she should have nothing to worry about.

YTAs have no concept of cats. I was raised with cats from the crib and so was my sister, cousin, and a couple of friends. Not one of us was in any way endangered. OP has made certain of Leut's health, and I would gladly welcome her if she wanted to hang out with our family. But OP has his head on straight. There's no danger to the baby unless someone tosses the poor kitty on top of the child. We'd know who would be to blame for that, and CPA should handle that irresponsible new mom or grandma. Leut is a member of OP's family, and as an elderly lady, has priority. >^.,.^<

Here's the thing. It's nice of the parents to allow their fully adult daughter to move back in and help her out, but they are not obligated to do so. The daughter is delusionally entitled and needs a big wake up call to understand that she is not the center of the universe and other people and, in this case their pets, are not hers to make decisions about. Dad is simply helping her to understand the situation. His house, his rules. She can't handle that, there's the door. I don't think we need to look hard to figure out why her marriage failed. I imagine if she showed true remorse and and understanding of why this was so completely vile, he might relent. If not, he shouldn't. She should just give that baby up for adoption, since she's clearly too stupid and entitled to parent.

How can someone who desperately depends on every support they can get, think they can claim something. Or choose something. Very entitled. If the daughter is not happy with the situation in her parent's place, she is free to find a place that fits better. With her own money. And her own job. If she can't do that she has absolutely no rights to claim something, or demand something, or do something without both!!! of the homeowners approval. The cat belongs to her dad, so only he has to decide what to do with the furry family member. The daughter has absolutely no say. As an adult child, she is a guest in this house until she finds a way to live on her own again. Yet, this does not give her any right to make decisions for other people. And sorry, no, pregnancy hormones are no explanation and no excuse for being a s****y and entitled person. In her position, as a single, no income mom to be, she should be grateful and quiet instead of bothering her parents.

That ingrate of a future unfit mother is very lucky her dad has so much self-restraint. I would have told her she’d better be gone by the time I got back from getting my cat home from the shelter and if my wife disagreed she could join the daughter in searching for a couch to surf. Animals depend on us for their well-being and are a responsibility you take on for their entire life.
