A committed relationship is not only about that ethereal bond. Settling down with someone is not as effortless as most would’ve liked it to be – it’s pretty challenging and requires a lot of patience. Yet, one of the most unpleasant parts of this journey is probably realizing that your significant other was born into an old-fashioned and somewhat judgemental family.

Nowadays, folks are becoming more open and acceptive of each other. Everyone minds their own business and celebrates the life of others. People are comfortable with their sexualities, with their backgrounds and their career choices – however, older generations are still trying to comprehend the new mentality of our society.

The escorting industry has been around for centuries, yet some folks still discriminate against people based on their career choices

This online user took it to one of Reddit’s well-liked communities to reveal what it’s like dealing with disapproving in-laws that never miss their chance to make an inappropriate remark about her former career choices. The post received nearly 33K upvotes and 1.4K worth of comments discussing how offensive their behavior truly is.

Woman wonders if she was wrong for deliberately humiliating her FIL after he made a joke about her past

The woman started off her post by revealing that, in her youth, she worked as an escort. Even though she’s not proud of it, she doesn’t really care what others think of it, as she knows that she did it for a reason. She then mentions that this is how she managed to meet her husband-to-be, though he was never her client. They began to date when the author turned 25 and a few months into their relationship, her now fiancé’s brother-in-law exposed her past, meaning that they had no other choice than to announce the news to his family.

The OP then shared that her partner was well aware of her former profession and that it wasn’t a problem for him. However, since the announcement, the woman suffered from some judgement from her mother-in-law, as well as some of her S.O.’s cousins and aunts that were openly “policing” their husbands whenever she was around, regardless of the fact that they were all quite mature. Naturally, the author’s fiancé talked to them about this inappropriate behavior, which managed to calm things down for a bit. The woman then revealed that they got engaged last year and have recently found out that they’re expecting a baby.

Once they disclosed the news to her partner’s family, his siblings were very excited for them, yet his mother decided to take her aside and question her faithfulness. She practically begged the woman to be honest and demanded that she tell her whether the child is actually her son’s baby. The OP couldn’t believe the audacity that this woman had, yet she quickly composed herself and replied with a “yes”.

Naturally, the mother-in-law got very defensive, saying that she only wanted to make sure and that she was thrilled to be a grandmother. However, another time, when OP and her partner visited his parent’s place, things went rather south. The woman’s FIL was talking about how he and his children have a certain birthmark that even his grandkids have managed to inherit, wondering whether this baby will be born with one too. But the cute talk was quickly interrupted with a “but how can we know from who he got it?”, reminding everyone about the woman’s former job.

Before her partner could interfere, the woman found a way to defend herself and asked the man to explain the joke. Repeatedly. Of course, the father-in-law began to get nervous, so he eventually excused himself. Later on, the OP’s fiancé’s brother-in-law made himself known, stating that the woman was wrong for embarrassing the man in his own house, since she obviously knew what the joke was about.

Fellow Redditors supported the author and praised her for defending herself

If you are too embarrassed to explain something you said, then its clearly something you shouldnt have said. Was a much better way to handle it than blowing up at them and getting into a shouting match

NTA. You did a job for money, end of story. The sort of people who are quick to shame you for doing the "wrong kind of work" would also shame you if you were unemployed. If they are willing to make crass and unkind jokes about someone their son loves and is making a life with, they deserve to be embarrassed.

It's always the sex worker that people like him look down on, not the clients that use them. He's basically saying 'hey all of us could have had sex with you at some point'...not realising just what that says about himself and what he thinks of his brother, sons etc. but rather he focuses on what that says about her instead. I certainly wouldn't be going having sex with someone my child or sibling had, yet he says it and think the joke is on her, but it's not. It doesn't make her look trashy as hell, but it does him.

Exactly, there's wouldn't be any sex workers without clientele. He's basically confirming he and other male members of the family do use services of sex workers!

Jeez. More self righteous a-holes shaming others. It's her body and her decision. She'd get less crap if she'd been a stripper but still wouldn't hear the end of it. Legalize prostitution already. She's definitely NTA.

Yep it's always shame the worker not the clients. I live next to a suburban brothel so I constantly get their clients banging on my door all hours. I always act dumb just to force these pigs to admit what they're looking for.... Think they're big men going to brothels till they're called out on it then they're little boys.

Yes! Acting like you don’t understand and forcing someone to explain their pathetic “joke” over and over is such an effective way to shame someone with their own words.

NTA. They think it's ok to embarrass you in front of everyone, but it's not ok if you embarrass the person starting it? He shouldn't dish it out if he can't take the possible repercussions.

That poor child is going to have *some* relative at some point tell him "your mommy was a whore" or something along those lines.
