It’s no secret that deception online is a big thing. From the comfort of their homes, people can trick us into believing virtually everything—from perfect looks to enviable lives. I mean, who’s there to check up on what’s true or false?
Unless, of course, they give in themselves. And this is what the new TikTok challenge is all about. #CatfishChallenge has TikTokers revealing their real faces behind picture-perfect selfies. Essentially, it totally debunks the belief that everyone looks like supermodels in their daily lives.
Initiated by 22-year-old Australian TikToker @moldogaa, the Catfish Challenge has already amassed 409.3 million views and counting. Others joined in to share their unrecognizable faces and it’s both amusing and kinda illuminating.

Bored Panda reached out to social media influencer Shanae Thompson, who has 113.6k followers on her TikTok account, where she goes by the handle @itsyagirlshaeee. Shanae also joined the fun #catfishchallenge and her video went viral, amassing 163.6k likes.
The influencer said that she enjoys doing challenges on the platform, but this one she made at random. “I didn’t plan that video at all, that content was taken after a single take and it ended up getting a lot more attention than I ever expected!”
Essentially, the new TikTok video trend debunks the common myth that everyone looks perfect in their daily lives. By revealing their genuine faces behind the makeup and photo editing, the TikTokers made a point that the picture and reality don’t always coincide. These light-hearted and comical videos are hashtagged #catfish to show just how deceiving the pictures can be.
“I would remind everyone to love themselves for who they are. Even in the moments when you don’t look your best. Be comfortable and confident in your skin,” Shanae said. “I enjoy being able to play with makeup and change my look. But at the end of the day, taking all that off and relaxing is the best part of the day.”
And when it comes to TikTok, the social media influencer said she’s over the moon that so many people “could enjoy my goofy content.”
“I think anybody who wants to put themselves out there as an influencer, dancer, or performer of any kind would be silly to not start a TikTok account. I have seen so many people’s careers take off from the app.” Shanae concluded that nothing about this app that she has experienced really is a downfall. And if it puts smiles on people’s faces, it’s even better!

The look on the right makes me cringe. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, but WHAAAAAT ! On the right, even though she is squinting, you can see she's a pretty girl, with full lips and good skin and hair. The figure on the left looks unreal and gross. IMO obviously.

So they altered their pics to try to attain society's insane beauty standards and also uphold them, and now they are posting their "real" faces with grimaces, weird angles, etc. Social media is so weird sometimes

The sub is called Pretty Girls Ugly Faces.” As a woman who goes no-makeup all the time, I’m glad I have an appointment with my neuro-ophthalmologist on Monday, because I think I rolled my eyes into my brain. Edit: And in case any makeup wearers feel like playing the victim, I don’t give a flying fart what women, men, nonbinary people or anyone else puts on their face. I’m specifically talking about the theatrical “ohhhh bare faces are sooooo ugly” behaviour.

I don't understand how these are "catfishes". It looks to me like the first picture is makeup and filters and the second picture is completely natural. Catfishing is when you start a romance with someone and you aren't who you say you are.

I catfished people since I was 16, before there was a word for it. I had no self-confidence and hated myself for being gay. Then I met someone as a catfish at 18 and fell in love with him. Managed to catfish him for 6 years before he told me he knows I'm not the person I claim. I came clean, it was the worst time in my life. We've been together for 12 years.

Well, no one looks great when they touch the camera with their nose, and make faces, purposely make double chin and so on. So, on the left, we have posing with make up, on the right we have person making face on like 2cm from camera. How is that even.. I don't get it.

This type post is disgusting. It is used to shame people who either have some form of body dysphoria or who are only trying to live up to impossible standards. There also seems to be people on this list who have gained/lost weight since the "sexy/glamor" pictures. I myself looked younger and thinner two years ago compared to today.

What is the mindset of these people, I wonder. Living in a make-believe world with their beautiful avatars. So, what happened to the real world for these people? They are a SAD bunch, admiring their fake selves while living in a fantasy world. Even in these pictures they are grimacing to hide their real faces. They simply cannot be true to themselves anymore.

Make up is intended to bring out the better qualities while hiding the flaws. However, most, if not all, of these aren't the same people. The before pictures all look like Mama June, and the after has features only a cosmetic surgeon can provide. Down sloping noses are turned up. Wide noses are thin. Double chins can be hidden but not without a price. Fun to look at if you remember they're all fake

I don't understand the point of this article. As "catfishing" is done by people who set up a false personal profile on a social networking site for fraudulent or deceptive purposes, why would they reveal their true faces?

I can understand how very heavy, complicated makeup can change a person's appearance, but in a lot of these examples, the whole shape of the person's face and head has been changed. Surely this is more Photoshop than makeup, right?

Look up “contouring“. It's a make-up trend with which you basically create a visual illusion to make certain features look different than they actually are.
