Trips with friends can be a bit like group projects: one person does all the work while others barely pitch in. In fact, group trips have ended friendships before, as 19% of Milennials and 14% of Gen Z say that they have ended a relationship or a friendship over someone not paying them back.

This friend group faced drama because one friend pulled out of a trip. Since most things were already paid for and non-refundable, her friends told her she’d just have to eat the cost. She refused and demanded that they all pitch in and pay her back, but when they told her “No,” she threw such a tantrum that others started questioning the friendship.

Many friends have fallen out after planning group trips, and money concerns are the most common reason

Group trips can sound fun, especially with a close-knit bunch of friends. However, before planning the trip, we often forget how complicated finances and arguments about where to stay and what to see can get. This group trip faced drama before they even left the house, but according to a Starlink Bank survey, 54% of arguments on group trips are caused by finances.

The cult sitcom Friendsmay not have been the most accurate depiction of 20-somethings living in New York, but that one episode where half the group can’t afford an expensive dinner and calls the other three out is still pretty relatable to adults today.

Arguments about money during trips annoy people so much that sometimes they even swear off traveling with the same group. Others start excluding certain people from group trips after deeming them problematic or too entitled.

Paying back late is the most common source of disagreements between friends when planning group vacations. A recent YouTrip survey found that 54% of conflicts stem from late repayments, 53% from inaccurate calculations, and 49% from unfair splitting of money.

Other times, people prefer to take the high road and just eat the extra cost. For many, peace of mind matters more than proving a point or even getting their money back. According to a recent survey by CIT Bank, 82% say that they do exactly that, preferring social harmony over the headache of splitting costs and arguing over every dollar.

Friends need to address money issues at the very start of the trip planning process

But is it possible to plan a decent group trip without it ending with friends at each other’s throats? Apparently, it is. According to the team at the travel blog Voyaiger, the first and most important step of planning is for everyone to state their budget. When friends start saying things like “I’m flexible” and “Whatever works for me,” it’s actually more restrictive — knowing an actual number is key.

“This feels restrictive. It’s actually liberating,” they write. “You stop debating destinations you can’t all afford. You stop tiptoeing around the friend who’s been quietly panicking since someone suggested the Amalfi Coast.” Your budget limits drive many choices: destination, accommodation, activities, and daily structure.

The second most important thing is to decide at the start how you’ll split the finances. It’s okay to pool money or track expenses individually via Splitwise or another app. The key is not to change that arrangement mid-trip. The team at Voyaiger also advises settling up every two to three days. “Small settlements feel casual. A $300 balance on the last day feels like a debt.”

Psychotherapist Caroline Plumer agrees that friends should get the money conversation out of the way first if they want their group trip to be successful. “Address your budget and remember that if a friend earns a lot more or less, it might affect how the holiday will take shape,” Plumer told Refinery29. “Sometimes those who have less money to splash than their friends, may feel embarrassed to admit it, and overstretch themselves in a bid to keep up. Both scenarios can cause a lot of added stress as well as a build–up of resentment.”
