Fictional dystopias have traditionally given us societies where ordinary people have little control over their lives, while governments, corporations, or institutions call the shots—just think of Orwell’s 1984, Huxley’s Brave New World, Collins’ The Hunger Games, or Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale. But you don’t need a totalitarian government or a post-apocalyptic wasteland for something to feel dystopian. Sometimes, it’s the growing uneasy sense that the systems that govern everyday life simply aren’t working for the people they’re meant to serve.

A September 2026 survey from the Partnership for Public Service found that just 27% of Americans said that they trusted the federal government, down six percentage points from the previous year. As Paul Hitlin, the organization’s senior research manager, said, “It’s a small decrease, but the larger overall trend is a real concern—that only about a quarter or so of the public trusts the government.”

The survey found that for each of the last four years, at least 42% of the public said they trust them. And sure, that number’s not particularly high (it’s still greater than the trust given to the federal government), but the survey did see improvement when it came to people’s views of civil servants: 61% agreed with the statement “Most civil servants are committed to helping people like me,” while 65% said they considered civil servants competent.

Mamdani claims that 39 million extra a year is "permanent funding" even though this was just for one year's budget and next year the budget will have to be done again. pretty sure this was a State Level decision "Governor Kathy Hochul today signed an Executive Order to create the nation’s first moratorium on new hyperscale data centers, establishing the strongest standards for data center development and creating a blueprint to support localities. The Governor is temporarily pausing State environmental permits for up to one year in order to build a nation-leading regulatory framework that protects ratepayers, the environment, the energy grid and communities across the state."
And perhaps that disconnect is part of what makes some aspects of modern life feel so dystopian: the growing sense that the people making decisions and the people living with the consequences aren’t always the same. And that goes beyond government, extending to the technology, workplaces, corporations, and other institutions that increasingly shape our everyday lives. Sometimes, it’s simply the realization that the people and systems shaping our lives don’t seem to be working as well as they should—or, at least, not for everyone. And these folks have the receipts to prove it.

Yes, and a 1/3 of the letters are being challenged bc the City didnt use any data for deciding who gets taxed, bur rather based on income tax by residency (a lot of elderly are challenging), and quite a lot of houses arent even over the amount on City Tax assesments, etc. Its estimated to probably cost NYC millions in legal fees, and good chance the State Legislature will override it next year and cancel it out anyways. He waited until the State Legislature ended sessions for the year to do this for a reason

All this was, was another extension of the The MillionTreesNYC Campaign, which from 2007-2015 added 1 million trees to NYC, and the second phase from 2016-2025 added another 1 million trees. This isnt anything new, its just the same old program but since most people only pay attention to press releases and not the actual City Council passed programs that have been around for nearly 20 years, he's able to get people to give him credit for something he has nothing to do with other than warming the seat while it happened

I use public transport and as someone on unemployment I have a concession which means I can ride the bus for free... but ONLY during peak hours. If I catch a bus after 6pm on a weekday I get charged. Which means I'm essentially being told that as I don't have a job I'm not "allowed" to go out at night. Like dude it's not as if I have a job to get up early for.
