Equality is humanity's Holy Grail, the cornerstone of most value systems, but we have yet to reap all of its rewards. Sure, our society has tremendously evolved for the better during the last, say, 100 years, but a long journey is still ahead, and the vast array of double standards that still divide people to this day highlight this perfectly.
The double standard definition states that it is a rule or a principle applied to different people or groups. The most prominent case of double standard examples to this day come from gender equality. What's usually okay for men, is not acceptable when done by women. Starting with beach attire and ending with lady bosses, society finds unnecessary ways to chime in about what's wrong and what's right.
Bored Panda has compiled a list of insightful illustrations that uncover the uncomfortable truth behind some everyday life situations, and it's (mildly) disturbing how accurate they are. People I know say I'm trying to be a fake geek girl or gamer girl and I have no idea what they mean. I'm not trying to be anything I'm just comfy this way! One time I overheard my coworkers talking and these two guys were discussing about "girls who put makeup are so insecure, it's like they couldn't even go out without makeup if their life depended on it". I think only women have a problem with this. I can't imagine guy's really finding this a big deal. XD Also on the beach people sunbathe topless as well so. As far as armpit hair. Well you're free to do it. But people are also free to not find you attractive then. But there are all kinds of things people find attractive and not attractive so I don't really see a problem.

The second one will always be an idiotic statement, for both male and female. I hear it a lot, yet don't understand why it's a race to get intimate with another person. It's a personal experience and (can be) something special, on top of that: It's none of another's business, and if those think it is, they're the ones leading a sad life. Sure, the term "Lucky at cards, unlucky in love" is on it's place in this regard, but luck can switch lanes now and then.

We were playing around, play fighting when I kicked my husband in the balls. It wasn't on purpose and I instantly felt horrible as he spent about 5 minutes in pain on the floor. The worst he got me was an elbow to the nose that caused a nose bleed, and one where he slammed my back into the thermostat. Literally last week my husband asked "Why don't we wrestle anymore" and all that flashed through my head. I don't like the idea of women hitting men any more than a man hitting a woman. The only fighting I am okay with is play fighting.

I don't agree with this one. Men get a lot of pressure on their bodies, as much as women. There is not a single person I met who said that they should "accept themselves" as a way to solve their problems (with getting laid). On the same note, any magazine cover will show that makeup is not a way to solve problems, or there wouldn't be 254 pages of the "new amazing diet already used by 45 stars that will make you lose weight before you even realize it". And we also have countless articles on "accept yourself and screw who doesn't, you don't need them anyway"...

Another double standard: just saw a news article about a female teacher that had sex with 4 of her students. Alot of comments on this are: "Boy, wish I had a teacher like that in school", "nicely done guys", ... Yet, if it had said "male teacher has sex with students" the comments would've been "omg, pedophile/perv", "castrate him", ... Both are just wrong and bad...-_-

Another double standard was in the news recently of Michelle Carter who convinced her 18 year old boyfriend to commit suicide in a quest for sympathetic attention from friends, family and the general public, face jail time. Her texts to him were exposed and she was facing a maximum of 20 years. But it was dropped to only 2 1/2 years, 15 months jail 15 months probation. You can find the transcript of the messages online. The sickest thing is not just what she was saying to the kid, but the fact she remained in a phone call to listen to him die. When it comes to the justice system, men have it far worse by a long shot. Therefore, I believed she should have served a much much higher sentence.

I only wish whoever compiled this knew what double standard meant. Many of these are just examples of different problems in different situations. Eg: skimpy armor on women is a double standard between men and women based only on gender. BUT Skinny woman with burger VS chubby woman with burger are different situations. Yes, as crazy as it sounds your physical shape relates to physical condition and what you can handle. Skinny guy can't lift car but Dwayne Johnson probably can, it's not double standard to notice that. Woman without child vs mother, 2 different arguments in 2 different situations. The lie of omission there is not accounting for the fact that there are also different people making the arguments.

The point of woman with vs without child is that women get judged and shamed no matter which choice they make, by strangers who know nothing about what factors went into that decision. You have no right to judge someone for choosing to be a parent or not. Just as the woman's doctor is the only person who should be telling her what to eat or not eat.

The bossy girl vs assertive boy is not nor has it ever been true. Plenty of boys have been called bossy too. There are good leaders, male and female, and there are bad leaders who simply want everyone to do things their way. They are called bossy. Also if your super is abrasive it never matters if they are male or female. This weak claim needs to die. Also shooting the breeze vs gossip. One involves discussing subjects of no importance with about noon who matters and no one is harmed unless copious amounts of alcohol is involved. Gossip usually involves talking smack about other people behind their backs and is the general cause of a great deal of societal ills. Lynchings, witch hunts and gamergate all start with gossip.

#30 Fat-shaming isn't okay for any gender. However, the image on the left (large guy, thinner, woman) is the standard trope for TV couples. Rarely is it the other way around. Most of these comic are illustrations of exactly what the problem is: men seeing their privilege as equality just because that's the way it's always been. i wish i could like this 1000 times. double standards r stupid. a shame nothing about disability is in there either. when u got mental or physical disability ( i had this personal experience) ppl ask u in study or career wise " u sure u wanna go for that? how will u cope etc!" instead of encouraging having ur back, will be the first to tell u they told u so, let u fall . but then be the same people who r like " u seen that girl with downsyndrome modellling. good for her so proud of her. wish more ppl with disabilities would go into careers and excell" ... its just ignorant >_< yes not all of us are capable of doing things but if society would adapt the majority of us could do some kind of work! excel and would feel like valued members of society. God, most of these images are ridiculous attempts at victimization towards women. There are both men and women idiots in this world and problems with double standards are also suffered by men a lot. Among them we can see how women suffer a lesser sentence for the same crime that a man could commit, how men are asked more in a relationship than women, how now society only focuses on ´´Girl Power´´ but not on ´´Man Power´´, seeing how industries, companies, and others focus attention on women and not on men (or rather, focus on both since that would be true equality).

Also, yes sexism works both ways. But last I checked men didn't lose they're right to vote, work, dress how they want, or go out by themselves. Also, 97% of the male sex population hasn't been raped or sexually assaulted (forcably impregnated in a lot of cases.) like women have, just to end up being told they were "asking for it" or just being sexualized further.

You should know #11, 21, 26 and 36 contradict #30. They contradict by fat shaming women when 30 is cheering them on for being with a thin man, which is b******t. Fat shaming happens all the time, especially when out with a thinner man. I actually had someone walk up to me and a date (on our first date) and asked the guy "can't you control her over eating? You shouldn't allow her to be seen in public when she is so fat." So yeah, 30 is wrong.

I'm intrigued. All of these posts about body standards show either overweight women who are otherwise fashionable and well-kept or unfashionable women who still seem pretty well take care of. They're always so clean in every depiction. Meanwhile the boys complaining that women treat handsome men better than unattractive men are sporting greasy, unwashed, uncut hair, neckbeards, acne, chapped lips, they're dehydrated, oily, unkempt, underwashed, unshaved, wearing dirty clothes, and then unfashionable and sometimes overwight on TOP of all that but those last two are really unimportant compared to the rest of all that. Hygiene and cleanliness are WAY more important than a few pounds. That's why James Corden is cute af and these guys aren't. The bottom line is that if you don't take care of yourself you don't come off as someone who would ever be good at taking care of someone else. Before claiming its a weight or fashion thing, ask yourself if its a hygiene thing.

Loved this compilation. Sadly, I have been working in purely "men´s area" for many years and I must say that almost all comics in the article were true. The stereotypes are b***h. It was quite surprising that half of the people saying various c**p like above were women though and according to my experience I can say that the bigotry and stupidity is the same at both genders. I think I heard it all and I do not care anymore. Why punish yourself for someone else being an idiot? Better do not take it personally and just make fun of such people with an irresistible smile on your face. ;-)

Most of these are really good. But a few are really misogynistic. Our patriarchal society creates double standards that harm women the most, but that also harm men (such as society telling men that they shouldn't show any emotion or that they can't be as good parents as women). We do need to point out the harmful effects of these double standards on men. But even so, some of the comics here (especially the ones on the last page) depict women in a really vile, misogynistic way that is not at all in the spirit of the other comics in the series.

Almost all of these are standard neckbear misogyny that take no account of societal context. They leave out the very real factor of power and social hierarchy; they only work if society is already 100% equal, so that if a woman takes power, she's taking unfair advantage. Whereas the reality is that in most circumnstances, if a woman takes on power of her own initiative, she's leveling the playing field. This is a bunch of meninist b******t.

I only wish whoever compiled this knew what double standard meant. Many of these are just examples of different problems in different situations. Eg: skimpy armor on women is a double standard between men and women based only on gender. BUT Skinny woman with burger VS chubby woman with burger are different situations. Yes, as crazy as it sounds your physical shape relates to physical condition and what you can handle. Skinny guy can't lift car but Dwayne Johnson probably can, it's not double standard to notice that. Woman without child vs mother, 2 different arguments in 2 different situations. The lie of omission there is not accounting for the fact that there are also different people making the arguments.

The point of woman with vs without child is that women get judged and shamed no matter which choice they make, by strangers who know nothing about what factors went into that decision. You have no right to judge someone for choosing to be a parent or not. Just as the woman's doctor is the only person who should be telling her what to eat or not eat.

The bossy girl vs assertive boy is not nor has it ever been true. Plenty of boys have been called bossy too. There are good leaders, male and female, and there are bad leaders who simply want everyone to do things their way. They are called bossy. Also if your super is abrasive it never matters if they are male or female. This weak claim needs to die. Also shooting the breeze vs gossip. One involves discussing subjects of no importance with about noon who matters and no one is harmed unless copious amounts of alcohol is involved. Gossip usually involves talking smack about other people behind their backs and is the general cause of a great deal of societal ills. Lynchings, witch hunts and gamergate all start with gossip.

#30 Fat-shaming isn't okay for any gender. However, the image on the left (large guy, thinner, woman) is the standard trope for TV couples. Rarely is it the other way around. Most of these comic are illustrations of exactly what the problem is: men seeing their privilege as equality just because that's the way it's always been. Wake up dudebro's: if a woman takes on power, she's not stealing yours: it was never yours to begin with. Almost without exception, she's not taking advantage of you, she's leveling the playing field. Climb out of your mom's basement and interact with the real world and learn what other people are really like.

This is funny :) I never think in double standards... my mother was a career woman her mother a housewife... I choose to be a musican and I feel we're all equal because inside our shells down to the core we are all the same - human, we have been both male and female in previous lives... its our soul that remains the same and unchangable... and all these ideas are just people loosing touch with reality :) non of its real... lets focus on what we have in common rather than be divided on issues that are not real, only petty nuances.

i wish i could like this 1000 times. double standards r stupid. a shame nothing about disability is in there either. when u got mental or physical disability ( i had this personal experience) ppl ask u in study or career wise " u sure u wanna go for that? how will u cope etc!" instead of encouraging having ur back, will be the first to tell u they told u so, let u fall . but then be the same people who r like " u seen that girl with downsyndrome modellling. good for her so proud of her. wish more ppl with disabilities would go into careers and excell" ... its just ignorant >_< yes not all of us are capable of doing things but if society would adapt the majority of us could do some kind of work! excel and would feel like valued members of society. We got so many ideas etc and not able to share its frustrating.

God, most of these images are ridiculous attempts at victimization towards women. There are both men and women idiots in this world and problems with double standards are also suffered by men a lot. Among them we can see how women suffer a lesser sentence for the same crime that a man could commit, how men are asked more in a relationship than women, how now society only focuses on ´´Girl Power´´ but not on ´´Man Power´´, seeing how industries, companies, and others focus attention on women and not on men (or rather, focus on both since that would be true equality).

Also, yes sexism works both ways. But last I checked men didn't lose they're right to vote, work, dress how they want, or go out by themselves. Also, 97% of the male sex population hasn't been raped or sexually assaulted (forcably impregnated in a lot of cases.) like women have, just to end up being told they were "asking for it" or just being sexualized further.

Most of those meme had to make a female. I am not saying they are absolutely false, they are just over expressed. As female would do them. 🤷🏻♂️ For example: Woman-things are bad. So man shouldn’t act like woman. Woman-things are bad said nobody ever and if, it was stupid being. So man shouldn’t act like woman, of course man shouldn’t act like woman. Man are not woman so they act differently. That is simple thing this. 🤦🏻♂️ Woman are emotional therefore man shouldn’t be emotional. This sentence is BS. Everyone is emotional somehow. Woman usually express themselves more then man. I don’t see anything wrong with it. Woman are more on words and talks and man are more on actual work to be done. You should know #11, 21, 26 and 36 contradict #30. They contradict by fat shaming women when 30 is cheering them on for being with a thin man, which is b******t. Fat shaming happens all the time, especially when out with a thinner man. I actually had someone walk up to me and a date (on our first date) and asked the guy "can't you control her over eating? You shouldn't allow her to be seen in public when she is so fat." So yeah, 30 is wrong.

I'm intrigued. All of these posts about body standards show either overweight women who are otherwise fashionable and well-kept or unfashionable women who still seem pretty well take care of. They're always so clean in every depiction. Meanwhile the boys complaining that women treat handsome men better than unattractive men are sporting greasy, unwashed, uncut hair, neckbeards, acne, chapped lips, they're dehydrated, oily, unkempt, underwashed, unshaved, wearing dirty clothes, and then unfashionable and sometimes overwight on TOP of all that but those last two are really unimportant compared to the rest of all that. Hygiene and cleanliness are WAY more important than a few pounds. That's why James Corden is cute af and these guys aren't. The bottom line is that if you don't take care of yourself you don't come off as someone who would ever be good at taking care of someone else. Before claiming its a weight or fashion thing, ask yourself if its a hygiene thing.

The one of the good looking guy getting away with a complement to the female worker while the ugly guy scares her, people may have easily come to that conclusion insinuated in the comic, but in reality the good looking guy already built up a rapport with her earlier and now appears to be getting away with saying things that she doesn't like other guys doing.

Loved this compilation. Sadly, I have been working in purely "men´s area" for many years and I must say that almost all comics in the article were true. The stereotypes are b***h. It was quite surprising that half of the people saying various c**p like above were women though and according to my experience I can say that the bigotry and stupidity is the same at both genders. I think I heard it all and I do not care anymore. Why punish yourself for someone else being an idiot? Better do not take it personally and just make fun of such people with an irresistible smile on your face. ;-)

Most of these are really good. But a few are really misogynistic. Our patriarchal society creates double standards that harm women the most, but that also harm men (such as society telling men that they shouldn't show any emotion or that they can't be as good parents as women). We do need to point out the harmful effects of these double standards on men. But even so, some of the comics here (especially the ones on the last page) depict women in a really vile, misogynistic way that is not at all in the spirit of the other comics in the series.

Almost all of these are standard neckbear misogyny that take no account of societal context. They leave out the very real factor of power and social hierarchy; they only work if society is already 100% equal, so that if a woman takes power, she's taking unfair advantage. Whereas the reality is that in most circumnstances, if a woman takes on power of her own initiative, she's leveling the playing field. This is a bunch of meninist b******t.

What's your definition of power? I will agree context is almost non-existent. Most men don't feel threatened when a woman is self sufficient or even in control, in fact its quite attractive. When she acts like men or women owe her something, then it switches, because there's obvious insecurity there and this is the same for men.
