Doordasher Allegedly Shows A “Whole Section Dedicated To People Who Don’t Tip” At McDonald’s, Sparks Heated Discussion

Apps like GrubHub and Uber Eats make dining in more convenient than ever, but slow deliveries can make the experience miserable. Imagine you plan a romantic evening for you and your partner just to get icy spaghetti and meatballs. Nothing ruins a Lady and the Tramp moment more than cold food.

Even worse, one TikToker says this may happen not because of strangely intense traffic or something else out of the delivery chain’s control but by design. @jhordanthemodel, who for the sake of this article we’ll call simply J, is a DoorDash driver and they just released a video in which we can see what the creator calls a “whole section dedicated to people who don’t tip” at a McDonald’s.

The clip instantly went viral and sparked a heated discussion on customer service and (the lack of) accountability.

Recently, a DoorDash driver made a TikTok about what happens to the food of those customers who do not immediately tip

We managed to get in touch with J and they were kind enough to have a little chat with us.

“I’ve been dashing for almost 2 years now,” J told Bored Panda. “My waitressing job closed down all of their locations when COVID hit, so I decided to start dashing as a quick way to make money while I looked for another job. But, I realized how much I actually liked dashing, and I liked the money I was making so I stuck with it. It was a nice, flexible job to have while in college (I just graduated last fall).”

J said that from what they’ve experienced there are more customers who do tip on the app than don’t. “Other Dashers may have a different experience because some areas aren’t as busy as others.”

And it went viral

In an earlier Bored Panda article on this issue, we explained that the total earnings a Dasher makes off an order consists of Base Pay + Promotions + Tips.

When customers place an order at one of the restaurants, they agree to a delivery fee and set the tip. The app then pushes orders to drivers who are logged into the app.

Once someone accepts an order, they drive to the restaurant, pick it up, and deliver it to the customer.

Base pay is DoorDash’s base contribution for each order. It usually ranges from $2-10+ depending on the estimated time, distance, and desirability of the order. Deliveries that require Dashers to travel a longer distance, that are expected to take more time, and that are less popular with Dashers have a higher base pay.

This number does not change based on the customer tip amount; if there are two identical deliveries where one customer leaves a $3 tip and another customer leaves a $6 tip, one Dasher will earn $3 more than the other.

If Dashers aren’t interested in a specific order, the payout for it goes up every time one of them declines it, so eventually, it will get big enough for a driver to pick it up. The problem is, however, that until that happens, the food is just sitting there.

A spokeswoman for DoorDash told the Daily Dot in a statement, “We’re proud of the flexible earning opportunities we provide, with Dashers making on average over $25 per hour they’re on a delivery. We are actively looking into the issues raised in this video and will take appropriate action as we learn more.”

But people are appalled by this system

They say tipping before you receive your order makes no sense

And there’s a heated discussion in the comments

Another TikToker, Amanda Jones (@prettyladyj1), used the duet function in response to J’s video and made a case that “tipping is a satisfactory service,” garnering nearly 3M views and 340K likes.

“That means if I’m satisfied with how you bring me my … food then I’m gonna tip you,” Jones says, continuing to argue that tipping should be done after a customer gets their order.

J commented on Amanda’s video saying, “You can feel however you feel, the fact still stands that we don’t have to take your order. Tip afterwards, literally no one is stopping you.”

J highlighted there’s a difference between going out and ordering food to your home. “I would say if you’re thinking of delivery services like a restaurant with servers, then this is why you may be confused on how it works. It’s not the same. I was a waitress for 5 years at many different places, and can confidently say it is not the same.”

“A ‘tip’ is the wrong word for delivery services, with Doordash is more so a ‘bid for service.’ You’re paying your driver to pick up and bring you your food. As Dashers, we are independent contractors, which means we aren’t employees of Doordash, but rather have a contract with Doordash. And this contract states that we legally cannot be fired/deactivated over not taking orders. They could do that if we were employees of Doordash, but we aren’t. I think a lot of people just didn’t know all of this and were under the impression that whether they tipped or not we had to take their order. So, finding out now that that isn’t the case I guess has some people upset.”

Food service distributor US Foods sought to gain insight into the delivery landscape and conducted a national survey of people who have used a delivery app at least once along with those who have delivered food for an app-based service at some point.

“Our survey establishes the most common complaints in the world of food delivery apps. Not surprisingly, people want food served warm, fresh, and on time – especially when they’re paying a premium for it,” US Foods wrote in a statement.

The top frustration among delivery app users was that food isn’t always delivered warm or fresh, a complaint cited by 17% of respondents; that was similar to the 16% who were critical of the fact that food was delivered late. Among other issues, 12% highlighted incorrect orders or restaurants ignoring special instructions, 11% were irritated by inconsistent prices, 10% were bothered by food getting shaken around during delivery, and 9% were annoyed by inconsistent or limited menus.

But frustration extends beyond the customers. “Of the nearly 500 deliverers we surveyed, topping the list is weak tips, food not being ready at the restaurant, and lack of communication with customers. To remedy this, many operators are scaling back delivery services and menus so as not to overwhelm the kitchen and create a negative experience for both the dine-in and delivery customers,” US Foods noted.

The survey also revealed that 95% of people tip deliverers regularly but only 63% of them do so via the app. The rest 27% still use cash.

J wanted to emphasize that at the end of the day it’s the customer who is making all the decisions. “You 100% can choose not to tip at all, and you 100% can choose to tip after the delivery or tip in cash.”

“We aren’t upset with you over your choice, were just informing you of what could possibly happen if you don’t tip,” they said. “There will always be a Dasher who is still willing to take your order without a tip. Just know that whether you tip on the app or in person, we don’t get the tip until after we deliver your food. It’s not released to us until we deliver the food. So, either way, we are actually getting tipped after delivery, which is what some people were also upset about. And know we aren’t being mean or vindictive by declining to take your order, we just get paid $2.50 by Doordash, so we have to make the best out of our dashes. I hope this explanation helped!”

What a shitty attitude. Ok, it is a free market and I understand you can choose which order to take, but don't laugh in my face telling me "if you don't tip in advance I won't bring you your food". My answer is simple: "i won't be using your service, have fun with that, entitled brat, Bye bye!".

It says "I will take an order where I have an assurance of making more money over an order where I might not be breaking even." It's not like they're maliciously punishing people who don't add a tip. The people who do put the tip on the order are offering a more attractive job for them. It's not surprising that the less attractive orders sit until there's nothing else left. In a busy market, that might be all night. I think "tip" is probably not a good term for it since that means a thank you for good service. This is a bid for a worker to do a job. Delivery workers are auctioning off their time and customers are bidding.

See, having been a server (back in the days when places still accepted checks and used the chonk-chonk credit card thingies so we were only paid non-cash tips once per month), I always preferred to be tipped in cash. So on the rare occasions I use a delivery service like Door Dash or Uber Eats, I have cash in hand to give to the driver. It saddens me that I have cash in hand waiting on the driver and they are going to deliver to me last or not at all because I didn't tip on the card. I guess I just won't use their service again.

Also by tipping in cash you can guarantee that 100% of the tip is going to the driver.

Demanding extra money on top of the delivery fees and service fees before you even get your food is ridiculous. At that point, it’s not a tip, it’s a bribe. I will gladly tip once my food is delivered, but not before.

People don't expect you to bring their food 10 miles for $2.50, they expect doordash and delivery companies to charge whatever delivery fee it takes to pay the driver sufficiently to bring the food 10 miles. I don't tip my UPS driver and I wish my food delivery driver didn't count on tips either. (though usually the only food delivery I do is pizza and I tip very well)

No wonder my food always takes so long and is in crap condition when I get it. I tip the driver directly upon delivery. I thought that would give the driver the extra cash, instead of putting it on my card. Guess I won't be using this service in the future.

then wtf are they paid for, to just sit down and see the orders pile up on a table? Or they don't get paid anything besides the tip? And how much is the tip, is it a fixed amount, or can I tip just 1 cent, and that'll do the trick? The whole tipping thing in America is crazy. You should tip only when the waitress or whoever else is doing an extraordinary job, in the sense, of going out beyond what they were EXPECTED to do. And even so, it should be the employer the one that should give a bonus or something. No one deserves a reward for doing the basic job they're getting paid to do, and if you don't get paid enough for what you do, then find a different job.

Just throwing this out there, but I read an article written by a lady from the Netherlands, she found tipping to be a crazy concept because where she was from, they paid wait staff an amount that is equivalent to something like $13.00/hr in US dollars. Maybe we are doing this who service industry thing wrong...just a thought.

So, how does this work? Door Dash does not exist in my country. Do you pay after delivery or up front? It seems like you pay when you order, or else the driver would not know about the tips. So you pay for something you may never get? Isn't that a breach of contract? Who gets the bad review then? The restaurant, Door Dash? I have so many questions. What a shitty system.

Frankly you sound like a bit of a bumpass. What happens when people eventually get fed up of ordering online if the world ever gets back to normal for real. They won't need you as often, your work will dry up, so no tips and no orders and no pay for you. And no soup for you either. Don't be a douche and just do the job and hopefully you get tipped at the door and if not then move along to next order. You annoy me.

I wouldn't want to use the service. Paying a tip on top of a meal is costly. Even McDonald's isn't cheap these days. The underlying issue is American doesn't pay a living wage this there is an expectation of tips. Tips are a thank you for your service not I hope you can pay your electric this month. Nobody is owed convenience. Having food delivered to your house is a service and the people who perform that service should be compensated for it. People who do not want to directly compensate the person performing the service can always choose to go get it for themselves.

Oh and I absolutely don't think J understands what "independent contractor" means, and she even thinking that a video like this will help their cause is just plain stupidity, and the entitlement is just unbearable.

I don't tip prior to completed delivery. I've had so many drivers leave stuff in weird places like the end of the driveway or the wrong address, be rude, or not deliver my food at all. If they leave my food at the door, I go back into the app and tip. If they hand it off to me personally, I tip cash. I tip very well because I understand the wear and tear on their vehicles, gas, unpaid wait times, etc all add up and UberEats isn't paying a living wage. It is a shame that the delivery companies are trash, and that both drivers and customers have been so awful to each other that now we're in this stand-off over tipping.

Honestly you know every driver has their own criteria and I say what ever works for that specific driver... I know top dasher that take tons of low pay no tip orders but take them all day long and make their money in volume. I tend to take nothing under $8 and nothing over 4 miles and that works for me. I take the risk of sometimes sitting waiting for orders but that on me like I'm sure sometimes taking all orders might not make as much. Either way we all make what we see fit. Lucky for us there is no acceptance rate minimum. I just make sure all my other stats are top notch cause those are the ones that really matter. Stay safe out there bro and get that $$$

The driver can see what the order pays before they even accept it. Unless the order is paying them at least $1 per mile which works out to around $12 per hour, it's not worth taking. Market area and time of day factor into what the company pays them per mile. When you factor in mileage, gas, insurance, and maintenance, any order paying less than $1 per mile is actually less than minimum wage. That's why they would rather pass on any orders paying less than $1 and no pre-included tip. DoorDash charges restaurants a minimum commission of 15% on every order on top of the service fee it already charges customers. Restaurants cannot absorb that so delivery orders are priced higher. Collectively, all restaurants should quit the delivery apps and hire their own drivers.

Do doordash not terminate the contract of dashers who get lots of complaints? Because in any kind of contract, both sides have to stick to the bargain, or the contract becomes void. You can't take an order from the system, decide it has no tip and just abandon it. You agreed to deliver the order. Equally if doordash actually charged a realistic price to cover the delivery, the dashers wouldn't have to rely on tips. And now for some reason my brain wants to break into Jingle Bells.... dashing through the snow... with a cold McDonalds on the way....

Drivers don't have to accept to know it's a no tip orde. Any seasoned driver will see the offer come in for $2.50 or$3.50 and you already know its a no tip before accepting the offer. I just click deny offer and list my reason and it moves on to next available driver. If a drive did for some reason accept and then drop request their completed request % would drop and THAT is grounds for deactivation if their % drops below a certain point in the last 100 deliveries. But there are other reasons why driver drop requests after accepting them like if the restaurant is taking too long no point on waiting 30 minutes or more on a $5 order. The smarter drivers know to balance their time to maximize earnings if I take 2 $8 orders quickly I might accept a low or no tip order if it's close by and fast restaurant just to get my $20+ average per hour. But for me out of principle I won't take orders where I'm losing money by doing them.

Personally I don't see it as a tip. If I order McDonald's, say my order is $20. That's what I'm paying McDonald's to make me some food. Then I'm going to add $10 to that. The $10 is what I'm paying someone to bring my lazy don't want to get dressed and go get it myself, food. I don't have any issues with getting my order quickly and getting my food hot because I'm not tipping, I'm paying someone for doing a chore for me and I appreciate their willingness to do it.

I’m a dasher and if I choose an order without tip, I deliver the person order. Tipping isn’t mandatory. I choose the order I want to deliver so I don’t hold anyone in content if they don’t tip me. Someone maybe going through a difficulty so probably he/she might not be able to extend extra cash out. It’s simple, choose the order u feel satisfied with and leave the ones you don’t.

Happens in all the gig apps. A driver isn't going to take a 20 mile, 100 item order for $7 when most customers don't adjust or forget to adjust the tip after delivery. I've tried accepting these low paying deliveries in hopes that the customer will tip accordingly after getting their order. Out of at least a hundred orders like this, only one or two adjust tips. And I have a 100% rating, I greet the customer when starting the shop, ask about all substitutions that they haven't already selected a replacement for, have never been late with an order and even check in before checking out to be sure they didn't forget anything on their list. Heck, some of those no tip orders have claimed nott to receive items that I know were there. Most(if not all) gig companies are relying on customer tips to make up for crappy pay on their end.

When you let your state continue to allow tipped workers to be paid less than minimum wage you end up with customer vs. worker attitudes. These companies actually expect the customer to pay for the goods and the employees wages. And everyone else is the bad guy.

Y'all's problem is with the delivery gigs. Not the drivers. We would lose money if we agree to take low paying orders due to gas, vehicle maintenance (you need this much more often when you are driving more), and needing to set aside to pay taxes every year. They have it setup so that the pay is too low without a tip most of the time to justify accepting the order.

The mileage rate for 2021 is $.65 per mile (what it costs for gas and maintenance and wear and tear on your personal vehicle). If I get an order that pays $2.50 and is 10 miles round trip, then it is costing me $6.50 to deliver that order. If my pay only shows $3.00 base pay and I don’t get a tip then I’m losing $3.50 by delivering that order so I would decline it. The base pay here is $3. When it’s really busy DoorDash will offer a “promo” of $1 - $3 more per delivery but that all depends on DD. I do accept most orders within reason, get to the restaurant ASAP, ask if it’s all there (I don’t go through the food bags, I can only take their word for it) secure the order in my car, and quickly and carefully deliver the order. I also communicate with the customer if there are any delays and what my ETA will be.

This is just how the pay structure works at Door Dash. The lowest compensation offered is $2.00 with no guarantee of a tip. Sometimes Door Dash doesn't reveal the full tip upfront, so this deters cherry pickers. Unfortunately, whether people like it or not, Dashers have the right to choose their orders. People don't want to work for $2 per delivery, when most people can only do 2-3 deliveries an hour. I would advise including a few bucks for a tip and if you're happy with the service, you can always contact Support to add more. I was a DD manager for a while, this is how it's set up.

I tip 20-25% because as a former waitress I really empathize with servers. Unfortunately, with DoorDash I still get 50% of my orders cold or the order is incorrect. I'm disabled so getting out to pick up food is very difficult for me. I've switched to GrubHub as their service is so much better. I also know it's not the drivers fault it's all on DoorDash.

my policy is to tip on the app - for the delivery fee - and give cash on arrival. Good fast delivery, food not smooshed, you get the cash as well.

That is not how it worked when I door dashed. You didn't see the tip before accepting the order and if you decided to not deliver it after accepting it went against your completion rate. If that completion rate got low enough you couldn't dash. Either they changed how they do things or this lady is lying.

I am done with door dash and the like. Company needs to pay staff better and not make them rely on tips! Also, the f*****g fees even before tipping are usally almost half the price of what I order, ugh! f**k off! Two times , my dashers would take my order and then drop it after 15 / 20 min. One time , it took over an hour for a taco bell order, cause it went through 3 f*****g drivers. One of them sat at the restaurant for 20 min, before dropping me. The second time this happen, I said f**k it, so not worth the cost and hassle! I get it myself or use places with their own delivery drivers and tip them 18/20% Suck my d**k, doordash!!!!!!!!!

I've been Door Dashing for just over 6 months and not do a lot of people have it wrong! We are performing a service! Granted sometimes I only get paid $2.00 per order + or - a tip. But that means I ALWAYS serve with a smile, a nice word and hit food. I have got and cold bags to give my customers the best service I can. I always try to communicate with my customers if there's any kind of issues with their orders. I rarely, if ever turn down an order even when the address is almost 30 minutes away from restaurants. You saw bottom line is I'm providing a service for people that can't for whatever reason can't or don't want to go out. I don't expect tips, yes they are nice but that's not why I do this job. Most young people don't know the meaning of service and gratitude! I'll continue to dash but because I like helping people out. By the way I'll be 60 in 3 months and am disabled. I don't qualify for disability according to social security disability standards & dash to pay my bills!

This is ridiculous. If your order is delivered you should have some kinda satisfaction with the service seeming how u couldn't or wouldn't get your order yourself. Which means a tip should always be applied. Now understand your drivers reasons on why not accepting your order. If im burning my fuel, wearing down my suspension, tires, oil sitting in drive thrus for 15-25 mins and 15 mins to you. Why would i take your 40 minute order for less then $20.00 u want us to work under min wage. This service is for ppl who can afford it

First the tip is not part of your pay. So if you don't like your pay get a different gig. Next Doordash may have that policy but eventually you'll be out of a job because consumers won't like cold late food (read other posts). Tips were meant for rich people who chose to pay extra for extras at restaurants or valets not a part of your regular pay.

I find it super-entitled that people want to be tipped BEFORE performing the service. A tip is a bit of extra money that the customer provides as a freebie to the worker for doing their job "satisfactorily or better". A tip is not a tool used by entitled workers to hold food hostage until gotten. TipDash just needs to pay better so that drivers aren't so rabidly scrambling for tips.

No upfront tip and the food i paid for, and paid delivery for won't get delivered in time or cold, possibly dried up and in some cases, inedible, like ice creams, milkshakes etc that will now be liquid? Is that really what you are saying?? Ok. News for you - you and the restaurants you serve, are off the list then, as there are other places that use other couriers that actually do deliver, and i always bring a tip to the delivery guys, ON DELIVERY, not before, and especially not so, as many companies dips their grubby mitts into the tipjar of the ones doing the work. However, that independent contractor just admitted that they won't do their contracted job, unless they get paid extra first. This is something the doordash should look into a bit...

Tips are someting Extra. Why would i order food online, pay for the food and pay for the delivery And have to tip ahead before receving food? When i am already paying for delivery. I have already payed for delivery and you are holding my food like a hostage. Thats shitty attitude.

In my country waitresses and similar types of employees get a normal wage which is not at all bad. Tipping is not common here. They don't rely on tips to make a living. In fact it sounds like a really strange concept for us. It sounds like the restaurant owners refuse to pay normal wages and take advantage of their staff.

As a Dasher, I don't decline orders because I don't want my rating to drop and my account to be deactivated. I also live in Jacksonville, FL, the largest city in the US by land mass and only 10% of people tip here. I've had to drive over 20 miles countless times for 4$ and no tip. They basically only pay us enough to keep gas in the car. We risk our health and safety to bring you your food and save you the headache of doing it yourself... And those of you that say you don't tip a waitress until after the service, you do at least expect to leave a tip when going out to eat, right? I always communicate with my customers and am on time and give an ETA and updates if anything happens, but still, I get stiffed constantly. People are just shitty, doesn't matter if you go above and beyond and follow their demands to a T... And I live out of my car and doing gig work like this is the only way I can survive... Barely... Door dash is the problem... They need to pay us more

Sadly, in my area, only 10% of people tip. I don't decline any orders because I don't want my Dasher score affected, which could lead to deactivation of my account. That being said, Door dash is the problem for not paying their drivers a good enough wage. We basically only earn enough through them to keep gas in the car. For people saying they don't tip waitress before the service, you do still go out with the intent that you will be leaving a tip, though, Right? If it's breaking your bank you leave a couple dollars as a tip, then don't order out. With the pandemic, some restaurants don't even have their lobbies open, so we have to sit in a long drive through line to pick up your food. We are saving you the headache of going out and risking our health and safety to do so for pennies... So keep that in mind the next time you order out. I live in Jacksonville FL, the largest city by landmass and I've had to drive 20 miles across the city countless times for 4$ and no tip.

Tipping started as a bribe for better service than the average customer. We need to discontinue the practice entirely and simply demand companies pay their workers a reasonable f*****g wage. That said until we have established that better system, tipping has become a necessary obligation that must be honored if we want people to be able to survive while doing service industry jobs.

When I realized the restaurants & customers are getting screwed by these services, I stopped using them. The flip side of that is that once the delivery people are assured they have a tip, they lose all incentive to get your order to you in a timely fashion as well. Why should they bother to hurry? They already have their tip. At least with pizza deliveries, I l tip at the door. For every ten minutes late they are, I start reducing the tip. I am generally a 20% tipper. So screw with me and you screw yourself.

I am a door dash driver. Door dash has nothing to do with the prep of the food. If it is wrong it is not our fault. If it is cold, that is the nature of the beast with delivery. If you went and picked it up chances are it will not be hot by the time you get home. I cannot afford to work for $2.50/delivery. Most of us don't believe the tip after delivery for the simple fact it doesn't happen. Some people say they tip at the door, majority of customers want you leave order at door, door isn't going to tip me. Most grocery orders are set up to tip after, doesn't happen. I have had to bring a huge grocery order up to 3rd floor apt., no tip. After I made 4 trips. I am not entitled but that doesn't mean I will work for nothing. If you don't want to tip then don't. But know most of us work hard to get your food to you. We wait in the long drive thru lines, up to one hour. We deliver in the rain. I bring your groceries to your door. I do the job customers don't want to do.

The issue here is that when doordash presents the orders they show how much each order is going to pay. So if you have a small order that's close by with a smaller tip, it'll probably get taken. But if you have a big order that's far away with a smaller tip, they're going to see another order that pays the same amount, takes less driving and takes less caring of stuff and they're going to take that one because your orders are competing with other people's orders

These delivery companies with their fees, tax etc is getting out of hand. I noticed like on Uber they charge more for items than the actual restaurant. Then they charge you more in fees if your order is a little big. Then there's the taxes. Like I had to order a happy meal and the total was around $13 it's crazy. I usually don't use the service unless I can't get out there. These are big companies pay your ppl right and provide them with health insurance.

If I’m using door dash it’s because I either can’t get out to get food or I’m sending food to someone that can’t get out to get food! I’m grateful and I will always tip ! There’s a place I love but it’s far away! It use to be on door dash then it wasn’t! One day it let me order it! I tipped the guy on the app then I scrounged up 10 bucks and made the guy a care package I can’t remember what all was in it but he loved it 😂

I do the same. Usually the highest option, but after these kind of stories I've started figuring it to make sure it's at least 20% or do a custom one. It's definitely not the drivers fault if it's wrong unless you can tell the bag has been tampered with. Still both door dash and grub hub have options for when it's wrong. They usually refund without question.

People will stop ordering because Door Dash has already raised their rates for the customers, and I am happy to get the orders that are $3, or more. In restaurants, if you put tip on card, the government knows exactly how much the server got and taxes it all. If you pay tip via cash, maybe some of it goes unreported, so the server keeps more. This is what I have believed for decades, so I pay cash tip for servers & drivers when I can, as a way of helping them. Is my belief wrong? Or just not applicable to third-party drivers?

I get a little pissed w Uber eats when my delievery instructions say to leave it inside my porch and not to block the door so I can open it and not knock the bag over. There is an outside door. A small enclosed porch to keep the rain an s**t off my bag and an inside screen door. Many times I've gone to open the door an knock a bag over or it's left outside and in the rain and also blocking the door. The most annoying was the girl talking on her phone that walked into my back yard an put the bag on the bag stoop blocking that door from opening. Like wtf. I tip in the app but I can adjust that tip after they drop the food off. I give them one chance. If I get the same driver twice I adjust tip if they do it again. It's instructions to make a delivery. I have a bad hip. I can't just do steps very well an could fall over. Not to mention I can't open the door an knock the food all over the driveway. Gods forbid if it's got a drink in there. I appreciate the drivers not bad service.

They system of tipping in America began after the end of slavery. Business owners balked at paying former slaves the same wage as a white person for doing service work, so they were paid little to nothing, but worked for tips. It is a system mired in racism and classism, as evidenced by some of the comments here.

I don't like the attitude of the poster, but I understand where it comes from. The services used to pay well enough that tips were extra, but now they even adjust the delivery fee based on the tip. DD is FOS on that $25/hr. I have delivered for all the services over the last 4 years. They are all trying to become profitable by cutting driver pay. I loved delivering food to people. Most were kind and generous, but now the services are ruining the market. I got a regular job and now I'm doing almost no delivery. I miss the customers. Most of you were great!

The flip side of that is people who don't bother to worry about your order because they've already GOT their tip. What do they care after that? Whenever possible, I tip at the door. Generally, I'm a 20% tipper. For every ten minutes late my delivery is, I start deducting. So fine, if they wanna screw with me, people like that just screw themselves. I would also say that If I was a dasher, I would see all those Mcdonalds bags as money bags. I mean, McDonalds is generally common on every other street corner, so the radius of those deliveries are pretty small I am sure. One dasher could take all those orders and go on a delivery spree. I see well over 40 bags there at 3 bucks a pop with the possibilty of a post delivery tip that can range from 1 dollar to 10 dollars. Looks like about 2 hours of work tops at $100 and hour. Mental note to those lazy people using food services: don't use doordash and instead go and pick up your own food. Maybe even learn to make your own food and quit bitching about not having any savings.

These comments are comical I have been both a delivery driver and a customer for years. Just get use to tipping or go get your own food. People have forgotten that getting any food or groceries you want delivered is a luxury. The real blame is on the people who don't tip on long drives or huge orders. I use to deliver every order offered like most drivers do in the beginning, then you learn the ropes and see what works best for you as a driver. I can't tell you how many good faith deliveries I have done for Walmart hoping the 100+ item delivery will tip well specially cause it's a 25 minute drive.... when I get there its just base pay.... it's the gamble we take sometimes. Honestly the real fix would be a forced gratuity minimum based on order amount. I delivered 2 55" tvs to this really nice house keep in mind the store told me countless DD drivers passed it up I have an SUV so I took them, made sure to safely drop it off... but still zero tip haha oh well I chose to accept the reques

One of the issues is that Doordash never should have started calling it a tip.... It is actually a Driver Compensation Fee. The customer pays what they feel the driver should earn for the delivery. The driver then can decided if that is adequate for them to accept the trip. Also, the customer needs to be notified everytime a driver declines to accept their order. $3-$4 if the restaurant is within 3 miles of the customer. $5 if the restaurant is within 5 miles of the customer. Than at least $1 minimum per mile between the restaurant and customer if the customer if more than 5 miles away. Remember, the driver could have to drive 5-10 or more miles just to get to the restaurant. And think, what if the driver is stuck waiting at a restaurant for 30 minutes or more on just one order...... That should cause customers to want to tip extra.

Door Dash and the like are a convenience service that simply links you with someone who is able and willing to do something unnecessary for survival that you do not want to do yourself. And you expect them to do it for nothing? It's not a tip, Door Dash payed the driver to pick it up. You are paying for the convienence of having them deliver it. If you want better service, be better people and quit expecting people to be happy with your crumbs.

Doordash delivery drivers use their own vehicles and own gas to bring you your food. They're slightly compensated by Doordash but, like many others in the service industry, they survive on tips. How willing would you be to jump in your own car and deliver food to a stranger for free? I have NO patience for entitled people who abuse this system. Also, Doordash employees DON'T open your bags to check your food. If it's wrong, that's the restaurant's fault. Take it up with the restaurant instead of leaving a poor review for the person who delivered you sealed, untampered with food.

People who think that tipping in the US is just a courtesy for service are very mistaken. Their livelihood is from the tips, so tipping is a baseline necessity. If you want to be generous because of good service then do so, but 18% minimum, no matter what.

So the company is not paying enough, hence the workers turn to customers to make up the difference. Shouldn't workers turn to the company and demand better wages/contracts?

People will come up with any reason why they shouldn’t pay for labor if you give them an out. Here it’s not hidden behind the veil of fair pay or a livable wage. The chick just doesn’t want to tip. She can’t really afford to dine out if it means that much to her to skip paying for labor. If you hire someone to do a job you have to pay them. Nobody’s going to want to drive across the city for you for free! Just give them the $5 and STFU.

(though usually the only food delivery I do is pizza and I tip very well)

then wtf are they paid for, to just sit down and see the orders pile up on a table? Or they don't get paid anything besides the tip? And how much is the tip, is it a fixed amount, or can I tip just 1 cent, and that'll do the trick? The whole tipping thing in America is crazy. You should tip only when the waitress or whoever else is doing an extraordinary job, in the sense, of going out beyond what they were EXPECTED to do. And even so, it should be the employer the one that should give a bonus or something. No one deserves a reward for doing the basic job they're getting paid to do, and if you don't get paid enough for what you do, then find a different job.

They won't need you as often, your work will dry up, so no tips and no orders and no pay for you. And no soup for you either.

Sure, lol :D this is crazy, this is what is wrong with USA, all around thw world tip is just generosly saing thank you to whom is servicing you, but not mandatory, but tips arent their pay.

I will not prepay tips ( I tip cash only min 20%), I will not pay the inflated prices for the cut down menu. I call the restaurant directly, and if they do not deliver themselves, I will pick up.

Not because I have set my sights low, because I want to CONTINUE GETTING that income. Greedy Americans need to stop thinking they are so special they deserve a tip for everything they do! Beggars cant be choosers and in today's hostile work environment, this is the first gig that I can do and not have to deal with all the workplace drama and bs.

It makes sense, after all I always tip my waitress BEFORE she delivers any kind of service.... Oh wait, no I don't because that makes NO sense.

I always give a 25-50% tip in advance. Never have a problem getting my food fast and hot.

25-50% tip? Are you kidding me? And you pay it in advance? This is ridiculous!

Your tipping is as weird as your prices without tax in the supermarket.
