Everyone deserves to be with a partner who loves, supports, and respects them, and creates an environment of trust, honesty, and kindness. But unfortunately, some people find themselves stuck in relationships that revolve around toxic communication, manipulation, constant criticism, dishonesty, betrayal, jealousy, and control. There are situations where you don’t recognize red flags in someone until months or even years later.
The Gottman Institute notes that these toxic relationships harm your mental health and emotional well-being through stress, anxiety, and isolation.

I’m With You On This One
Setting and then protecting boundaries is one of the most powerful tools you have in any relationship. Simply put, boundaries allow you to prioritize your well-being and needs by communicating your expectations of how you want to be treated. What’s more, they lead to more autonomy, trust, and respect.
As The Gottman Institute puts it, boundaries “enable us to honor our limits and design our lives and relationships around those limits.” Your goal is to protect yourself from threats, not change other people’s behaviors.

Before And After
If you want to leave a toxic relationship, you have to put your health and safety first, so make sure to plan ahead. Healthline urges getting support from a therapist or a domestic violence advocate who can help put together a safety plan. Furthermore, reach out to your family and friends for emotional and physical support: you might need a place to temporarily stay, not just someone to hear you out. They can also have your back when you need them most.
“Don’t feel safe having a breakup conversation with your partner alone? Ask a trusted loved one to come with you. Knowing you have their support may help you stick to your decision to leave, even if your partner tries to convince you otherwise,” Healthline suggests.

In the meantime, block your ex-partner’s phone number and social media, and think about changing your own number. And remember to take care of the most important basics in your life, like getting regular exercise, getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, etc. Self-care allows you to be more resilient to stress.
Healing from a truly bad relationship does not happen overnight. It takes time, patience, proactiveness, and concentrated effort to genuinely start moving on, recover emotionally, and rebuild your life.
A lot of different factors affect how quickly you can potentially recover from divorce. For example, how long you were together, how good or bad the relationship was, and how committed you were to your partner, explains Susan Pease Gadoua, L.C.S.W.

Other factors that affect the speed of your post-divorce recovery include whether or not the divorce was a surprise to you, whether you and your spouse had children together, as well as whether your partner was already involved in a new relationship while you were married.
Your personality, age, and socioeconomic status also impact your recovery.

“I liken the undoing of a marriage to trying to disentangle two trees that have grown next to each other for years. The more intertwined the root systems are, the longer it will take for the trees to go their separate ways. In addition, grief has a life of its own and you are done when your grief process is done, and not a minute before. There is no magic formula and no way to get through your grief on the fast track,” Gadoua explains in a piece on Psychology Today.

Divorce Glow Up Is Real
As difficult as it might be, it is vital that you start to accept what has happened to you. You do not have to ‘like’ the fact that your marriage has ended, but you do need to begin embracing your new reality. That is, if you want to move on at some point.
What’s more, it’s healthy to be social and reach out to others for support. Let other people help you in your time of need. Don’t isolate yourself, and don’t try to ignore your problems or avoid talking about your feelings.

I Was Basically Starving Myself For Him. And Being Someone I Wasn’t
According to Gadoua, if several years have passed since your divorce and you still can’t move on emotionally, you should seriously think about reaching out to a therapist for help.
As per Peg Streep, you should strive to be proactive in order to reclaim your sense of agency post-divorce. In a post on Psychology Today, she suggests embracing your shifting identity and focusing on the things you can control.

Never Married But Spent 4.5 Years Miserable And Two Back To Back Babies
In the meantime, you should set new goals for yourself while managing your regrets. Rumination, on the other hand, is your enemy.
“Consciously make a decision not to talk about the divorce as if it’s still ongoing. ‘If only’ thinking—if only I hadn’t married him/her, if only I’d acted sooner—only keeps you stuck and feeling powerless. If you beat yourself up for making the mistakes you made, please seek help: What you’re doing is counterproductive,” Streep explained.
“Recognize that you need to let go of your lousy experience and move forward. If you’re having trouble—you’re still ruminating over mistakes made or opportunities missed, still flooded with negative emotion, or drowning in regret—please get support and speak to a counselor or therapist. Work on implementing the goals you’ve set for yourself and put one foot in front of the other. There’s a whole future ahead,” she emphasized.

Divorced Before Being Married. A Promise To The Void
Before After
I've actually gained some weight (~20 lbs/9 kg) since moving home almost two years ago, but I'm happier. He wanted to control what I ate, control how many calories I ate per day, control my exercise routine. I can eat whatever I want to whenever I want to now, and I don't have to fear that he'll ask me about what I ate. I am overweight now XD but I will lose weight when I am ready to, and not because he thinks I am "disgusting" and "unattractive" because I'm fat.
I think many in this list see more of a difference in themselves than is evident to an outsider. The weight-loss ones are obvious but many don't look at all changed to a person that doesn't know them. Anyway, as long as they are all happier, that is most important.

Load More Replies...In December 2025 I broke up with my bf of 13 years. In May 2026 I was finally able to move out from his place (had slept in his guestroom for all that time). And now that it's not even half a year since I moved tf away from him, I can see that I lost about a clothing size. I didn't bring the scales so I have no idea what I actually weigh. I was at 108kgs when I moved out. Perhaps I am about 100kgs now? I do not hate him, actually. We were each struggling and in survival mode. But I worked so hard to make him happy, keep our 3 kids thriving, keeping some kind of every day routine, house keeping etc. I completely lost myself in the process and he was never happy no matter what I did. When he started to tell me that I was worth less than him as a human and a citizen because I do not have a job, I just knew it was over. I tried to make it work, to get my feelings for him back. But it didn't work. And one day "I love you too" was impossible for me to say to him.
Since I moved out I have statted to listen to music again (the music I like!), watching dvds again, I am getting back to reading and writing. I am dancing around the house on a daily basis, I go on walks every now and then. My over eating and comfort eating has nearly vanished completely. I am seeing friends again. I feel pretty and light again. I find it easier to receive comments like "you're so pretty" and "you are s**y". Before I just wanted to run and hide when someone told me those things. Now I'm more like "thanks! 😁". (Warning for TMI) my sexuality has gone from wondering if I may be asexual because I was not interested in s*x, I was almost repulsed just by the thought of it, to my hypersexuality coming back full speed! I am not having s*x, though, but oooooohhh whenever I find myself a boyfriend again, he simply must have a high s*x drive 😅 I am exploring myself, figuring out who I am now. Re-discovering who I was before the relationship and who I am now.
