There is something strange about the way that a simple static image can unsettle us, even when we are saturated with continuous digital content. We flick through thousands of images and memes every day, and yet sometimes one seizes us unexpectedly, leaving us with a shiver disproportionate to what's on the screen. Logically, we know it's merely a set of pixels arranged in a certain way, but our minds don't operate on cold logic most of the time, especially when it comes to visual input.
Part of the discomfort comes from how far our minds are wired to react to faces, patterns, and subtlety. Human beings evolved to instinctively rapidly scan an area for threats, so we're always set up to look for things that don't quite seem right.

I was a passenger on one of those ferries in conditions a lot like this. I actually chose to sit outside on one of those benches to get a better look. It was like being in a pirate movie! I took some pictures until the wind nearly ripped my phone right out of my hand. ...wow, I really don't have any self-preservation instincts at all, do I? No wonder my sister said Dad and I are in a competition to see who gets themselves killed first.

My brother was an Alaskan Fisherman, crabbing. Some of the pictures he sent home were horrifying. They (The Ocean Enterprise) was hit by a rogue wave, it looked much like this. Thankfully all the deck crew were firmly lashed and no one was lost.

That's totally fair to say I think. I don't have kids but my nieces and nephews drawings when they were little didn't always look the best - think of the kid who drew scissors and they look like a male appendage, or the kid who drew her mom selling a snow shovel and it looks like she's pole-dancing. I'd definitely like to know what the kid said this meant or represented.

What's going on leading up to this photo? What's going on after? The quiet is eerie precisely because nothing is happening, nothing is answered. While a video lays before us the whole progression, an image is a snapshot, and it is in these gaps that our imagination fills in, carrying us sometimes into the darkest possibility.

This isn't creepy, this is necessary. And common sense. A good suggestion is to also take a large bed sheet (white) with S.O.S clearly painted on it, just in case. Can be easily seen from the air. And always, always, always take more water than you think you'll need.

There's the phenomenon of the uncanny valley, too. Images that try to depict something familiar but don't manage, like AI-generated faces, mannequins, or images Photoshopped for unrealistic beauty, occupy this sense of unease between real and not real. Our brains want things to be in definite categories: human or not human, safe or not safe. When an image is in between, it puts us on edge, like an itch we can't scratch.

I have seen clips on the net of people being pulled into a rotating machine, one stands out more and you just know the guy died his legs were smashed to jelly as it spun him slamming them into the floor on every rotation. I've also seen fast acting colleagues turn the machine off before any real physical damage is done beyond bad bruising. Be careful around any type of machine, your family only has one you.

Had a guy in a shop I worked in get dragged into a gang drill, hydraulicly compressed and have 8 hole bolt pattern drilled into his chest, flooding it with cutting oil. Miraculously, he lived, but was permanently disabled and given hypoid pneumonia for life. Nothing funny about these warning labels!

I once had a steel slug shoot out of a lathe, bounce off my safety glasses and ricochet through the ceiling. I used the shattered glasses in my safety lecture for new hires. It was a pretty effective visual aid. :)

In middle school, I had a friend whose dad died in a factory accident. He fell into a vat of molten plastic. The vat also had blades in it for churning the plastic to add colors. I felt so bad for her and her family. It left her mom to have to care for 4 girls by herself. She did get a ton of money in a huge lawsuit though due to safety regs not being followed to protect people from falling in. I guess it was supposed to have a net or grate or something on it and it had broken and was never fixed.

And then there's the fact that static photographs deprive us of sound, movement, and context, in a way that makes them all the more haunting. A fuzzy person in a video can be dismissed as an optical illusion when we see them move, but a photograph is frozen there forever. It doesn't explain, it doesn't tell us anything, it just haunts us. That's what gets us to keep looking, uncomfortably, long after we've scrolled on.

It's a flatfish, the other eye is around the other side. Flat fish have evolved in two ways, some have flattened their bodies from the top down, they look quite normal, just flat, others, such as this one, lay on their side and their eyes have gradually moved around their body to compensate, they do look a bit odd compared to the first type.

I'm not one to body shame, but as I look at t6his, read the description, see how thin these children are, then notice that mom doesn't look too underfed, I'm a bit confused. Anyone else? EDIT: I just discovered the mother, only 23 at this time, was pregnant with a fifth child, which she also sold.

couple years ago my and my BF were living in this new apartment building and basically the street around was just warehouses, not very well lit....I used to work day or night shifts from 7 to 7 so in winter it was dark in the morning and dark in the evening, I would just listen to music very loud and walk that street very fast :D

I see they let my Ex wife out again. I woke up one night to find her with my socks covering her hands and she was scraping at the wall with a spatula because of the bugs. I asked about the socks and she said that's to keep them from jumping off of her back onto the wall. I took her to the Hospital right then. I knew she was using for a long time but really wanted my kids to have both parents as I was an only child, never met my Dad. What I learned: You can't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. So glad it's over.

They're caused by light reflecting off ice crystals in the atmosphere and back through gaps in the clouds. The light source is the high-intensity lights used by fishing boats to attract fish. You can see the glow of the boats' lights along the horizon, and they're so bright that they are illuminating the bottom of the clouds.

The Trophy Heads Of The Māori
Long before European colonizers arrived in New Zealand, the native Māori people were preserving the severed heads of the fallen. Known as mokomokai, the heads were chopped off, boiled, smoked, dried in the Sun, and dipped in shark oil before being displayed or paraded around like trophies.

It was a deliberate attempt to make the bison extinct because the Native Americans relied on them for so much of their life (hunting them for food, shelter, etc). Drive the bison into extinction and the Native Americans will either follow them into oblivion or be forced onto the reservations.

That's a faked image, or at least not an honest one. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO inspired the story. It's a beautiful and well cared for hotel. See the pic I attached. Stanley_f7...4d6b2a.jpg

The Ghost Pilot - 1987
In 1987, Mrs Sayer was visiting air airfield in England with her friend. She thought it would fun to take a photo of her sitting in the cockpit.
When the image was developed, there was a man sitting in the pilot's seat who hadn't been there when the photo was taken. A long lost pilot? No one is sure.
