50 Terrifying Photos If You’re Feeling Like Getting The Heebie-Jeebies (New Pics)
There was a time when most folks truly thought it implausible for something you see on a screen to be terrifying. Then came films like The Ring or just your run of the mill “cursed images” article to show that, actually, our brains are perfectly good at feeling scared.
We’ve gathered some creepy, unsettling images from across the internet for you to make yourself feel scared, if that’s your cup of tea. So get comfortable, preferably under some blankets, upvote your favorites and be sure to share your thoughts in the comments section down below.

In Honor Of My Mother, I Present To You: Her Knit Self Portrait
I was going to say that this is pretty amazing talent, *but*.... ... ... Shades of Buffalo Bill!
Load More Replies...Oh good! I'm not the only one! There's something weirdly sweet about it, to me. I'd just want to make sure it's not sitting somewhere I could jumpscare myself with it.

A Painting Of My Sister
omg, no ones knows what I am talking about when I talk about that game! I love it!
Load More Replies...There is something strange about the way that a simple static image can unsettle us, even when we are saturated with continuous digital content. We flick through thousands of images and memes every day, and yet sometimes one seizes us unexpectedly, leaving us with a shiver disproportionate to what's on the screen. Logically, we know it's merely a set of pixels arranged in a certain way, but our minds don't operate on cold logic most of the time, especially when it comes to visual input.
Part of the discomfort comes from how far our minds are wired to react to faces, patterns, and subtlety. Human beings evolved to instinctively rapidly scan an area for threats, so we're always set up to look for things that don't quite seem right.
Wasp Nest Around Spotlights
On the plus side, intruders are going to keep far, far away. You do NOT want to mess with someone who has a demon guarding their property.
Sydney Ferry Worker
I was a passenger on one of those ferries in conditions a lot like this. I actually chose to sit outside on one of those benches to get a better look. It was like being in a pirate movie! I took some pictures until the wind nearly ripped my phone right out of my hand. ...wow, I really don't have any self-preservation instincts at all, do I? No wonder my sister said Dad and I are in a competition to see who gets themselves killed first.
My brother was an Alaskan Fisherman, crabbing. Some of the pictures he sent home were horrifying. They (The Ocean Enterprise) was hit by a rogue wave, it looked much like this. Thankfully all the deck crew were firmly lashed and no one was lost.
Dug This Up In A Church Graveyard During Renovation
At this point, I say go ahead, the world is f****d up already.
Load More Replies...It looks like one of those things that Professor Sprout pulled out of the pot in the 2nd Harry Potter movie.
Is that mandrake root? Should someone tell Prof. Sprout that it got away?
A twisted face, mismatched eyes and the rest of the expression, or an unsettling background, these all tiny details ring alarm bells in our unconscious before we even realize it. And that's why photos can become creepy without us even understanding why.
I Took My Daughter's Screens Away For A Week And She Ended Up Drawing This
Maybe... maybe get her checked out. And keep her away from devices for a while.
and knives, hammers and anything that could be used as a weapon.......
Load More Replies...I would like to know the daughter's age and explanation of what it depicts, if anything. Sometimes doodles just turn creepy and sometimes it means more. What's going on with the arms (as we're looking at them) on the right?
That's totally fair to say I think. I don't have kids but my nieces and nephews drawings when they were little didn't always look the best - think of the kid who drew scissors and they look like a male appendage, or the kid who drew her mom selling a snow shovel and it looks like she's pole-dancing. I'd definitely like to know what the kid said this meant or represented.
Load More Replies...We have kids in the neighborhood who draw such faces, write 'help me' while giggling in groups. Few people got concerned and wanted the parents to get the kids checked. Turned out to be nothing. The kids were just having fun together
I just think it's her creative side. I drew weird stuff when I was a teenager
Actually I find it artistic. If it doesn't conform to BP beliefs, it must be bad. You guys should open your minds a little and close the mouths a lot.
Artistically this is not horrible. But are those detached p***ses in the left hands?
This Fisherman With A Deep Sea Wolf Eel
It's already dead. Probably bycatch from their nets.
Load More Replies...Could equally be titled "This Deep Sea Wolf Eel With A Fisherman ".
The Face Of A Tapeworm Under An Electron Microscope
Whenever I'm sad, I remember that I could also be looking like this and spending my life in somebody's intestines. Then I'm still sad, but also feel guilty that I don't appreciate my life.
Chin up - for all we know, our universe is actually just a polyp in the intestines of a giant alien lifeform.
Load More Replies...Lately, I've a real thing for looking at water bears up close. I find them so cute.
"You My tapeworm tells me what to do You My tapeworm tells me where to go" Needles - System of A Down
Static photos are also creepy because they leave space for our imagination. A picture that suggests something is off, maybe a dark figure lurking in a doorway or a child staring straight at the camera, leaves our imaginations to fill in the specifics. What's going on leading up to this photo? What's going on after? The quiet is eerie precisely because nothing is happening, nothing is answered. While a video lays before us the whole progression, an image is a snapshot, and it is in these gaps that our imagination fills in, carrying us sometimes into the darkest possibility.
Opening In Pavement
According to the City of Toronto, this is a liquid colored with non-toxic dye to see if the mysterious sinkhole connects to any sewers.
That is a lot less concerning. It looked like a major environmental disaster in the making.
Load More Replies...Is this in Russia ? Just a bit of nuclear waste water under the road. Don't worry.
Looks like Mr. Burns needs to find somewhere else to hide his toxic waste.
The green is a dye called fluorescein, which is used to track leaks and flows in instances such as this.
Load More Replies...Hermit Crab Using A Human Skull As A Shell
Maybe the prior owner would have had a different opinion, but if a hermit crab wants to use my vacated skull for a home they're welcome to it.
Exactly! The most epic ending possible. Forget rotting away in a buried box, I want to provide food or shelter for plants or animals. Just please wait until I'm dead first.
Load More Replies...I just looked this one up because that skull did not look real to me. Turns out it's a sculpture. https://www.artsy.net/artwork/josh-keyes-migratory-soul-1
I already loved crabs... this may be my favourite picture of one ever.
Remoteness Warning Sign In Australia
This isn't creepy, this is necessary. And common sense. A good suggestion is to also take a large bed sheet (white) with S.O.S clearly painted on it, just in case. Can be easily seen from the air. And always, always, always take more water than you think you'll need.
That bedsheet idea is brilliant. Never would occur to me.
Load More Replies...Well I feel silly now, done this drive with one jack and one spare tyre 😂 but I never read this specific sign when I drive these areas only the cultural ones. A second tyre and jack is a good idea
I've actually seen one of these in real life, right before we crossed... I forget which desert it was, but one of the really big ones we have here.
I would like to drive across the Nullarbor one day, but I know it’s not for the faint hearted
There's the phenomenon of the uncanny valley, too. Images that try to depict something familiar but don't manage, like AI-generated faces, mannequins, or images Photoshopped for unrealistic beauty, occupy this sense of unease between real and not real. Our brains want things to be in definite categories: human or not human, safe or not safe. When an image is in between, it puts us on edge, like an itch we can't scratch.
Abandoned Hospital
Looks like the last surgery carried out in this room was a disaster.
Kinda hoping that's hydraulic oil or rusty water on that there floor.!
I worked as a housekeeper in the ER at our local hospital. This is nothing.
Signage On A Machine At Work
This makes sense, I had a flannel shirt torn off me by a drive shaft of a machine.
Good thing the shirt wasn't sturdy enough to drag you with
Load More Replies...I have seen clips on the net of people being pulled into a rotating machine, one stands out more and you just know the guy died his legs were smashed to jelly as it spun him slamming them into the floor on every rotation. I've also seen fast acting colleagues turn the machine off before any real physical damage is done beyond bad bruising. Be careful around any type of machine, your family only has one you.
Had a guy in a shop I worked in get dragged into a gang drill, hydraulicly compressed and have 8 hole bolt pattern drilled into his chest, flooding it with cutting oil. Miraculously, he lived, but was permanently disabled and given hypoid pneumonia for life. Nothing funny about these warning labels!

Heard of a guy pulled into a drum debarker (Google it if you don't know what it is) by putting his hand through a D handle shovel and using it to try and dislodge a log.
There are SO many videos of people being k i l l e d by lathes. Some people shouldn't work around macinery.
I once had a steel slug shoot out of a lathe, bounce off my safety glasses and ricochet through the ceiling. I used the shattered glasses in my safety lecture for new hires. It was a pretty effective visual aid. :)
Load More Replies...In middle school, I had a friend whose dad died in a factory accident. He fell into a vat of molten plastic. The vat also had blades in it for churning the plastic to add colors. I felt so bad for her and her family. It left her mom to have to care for 4 girls by herself. She did get a ton of money in a huge lawsuit though due to safety regs not being followed to protect people from falling in. I guess it was supposed to have a net or grate or something on it and it had broken and was never fixed.
Locktout/Tagout is for the electrical system. My husband almost died because the guy before him didn't follow procedure.
One Of My Kindergarten Students Drew This
sounds like a hard cry for help. I trust you followed up with your student?
Cultural associations add another layer. A simple photo of an empty hallway might feel normal to one person, but to someone who’s seen countless horror movies, it carries the weight of every jump scare that ever happened in a dim corridor. Digital media doesn’t exist in a vacuum, it taps into all the stories, symbols, and fears we’ve absorbed over a lifetime. Sometimes we’re not reacting to the image itself, but to the library of associations our brain pulls up in the background.
A Friend Went For A Walk The Other Night And Saw This Woman Just Standing On A Roof
This could have been me when the tarp covering our roof-in-progress came loose. I had to climb up there in pajamas and help anchor the tarp back down. (With Husband, but still...)
The 13-Mile Long Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike
No motor vehicles are allowed on the property, but bicycle riders are free to use it at their own risk. The trail requires helmets and lights.
Literally better than most Pennsylvania highways....and likely safer.
That place looks scary as hell and I am SO going in there. I mean I explored the creepy backrooms of my last workplace, completely alone, so clearly that sort of thing is my scene.
Uhhh, why would a turnpike be abandoned? No people live in area now? Better turnpike built? Just asking.
Desperately Needed A Toilet And Was Directed To This…
Gah, was directed to something like this in SE Asia. No thanks, I'll hold it.
And then there's the fact that static photographs deprive us of sound, movement, and context, in a way that makes them all the more haunting. A fuzzy person in a video can be dismissed as an optical illusion when we see them move, but a photograph is frozen there forever. It doesn't explain, it doesn't tell us anything, it just haunts us. That's what gets us to keep looking, uncomfortably, long after we've scrolled on.

The Hilo Tsunami Of 1946
This chilling image captures the final moments of the unknown person at the bottom left.
My Friend Works On A Fishing Boat And Just Sent Me This Abomination
Young flounder with an eye that has not yet fully migrated. They are born with an eye on each side but one eye slowly shifts until both eyes are the same side. Nature is a scary place sometimes.
It's a flatfish, the other eye is around the other side. Flat fish have evolved in two ways, some have flattened their bodies from the top down, they look quite normal, just flat, others, such as this one, lay on their side and their eyes have gradually moved around their body to compensate, they do look a bit odd compared to the first type.
Flounder? Born/hatched with eyes one on each side. As the fish matures, the ‘underside eye migrates over to the ‘top’ side. So, this one would be mid-move.
Lastly, disturbing digital media reminds us just how much power mere images continue to wield over us. In a world saturated with moving images, special effects, and near-constant information flows, one immobile picture can still link us up to something primal.
This War Memorial Has Blank Spaces For Future Conflicts
Most of the plaques on the JFK space center memorial for those lost in space travel are still waiting to be filled.
The Creepy Photo Taken Just Before The Dyatlov Pass Incident
Looks a lot like my buddies on a ski tour a few weeks ago several kilometres north of Mount Jagungal on a blizzardy afternoon.
WOW. Look it up - it's insane. I'm just wondering if it was a Yeti.
Welcome To My Basement
Methinks you have some problems with humidity. But that's just my opinion.
I think a Molotov cocktail would work better...
Load More Replies...It's illogical, works on instinct, and unsettles us in ways that are irrational but deeply human. That tension between knowing it’s “just a picture” and feeling its weight anyway is exactly why certain images stay with us, surfacing unexpectedly in the quiet moments, like when we’re trying to fall asleep in the dark.
4 Children For Sale
August 4, 1948 - Chicago, Illinois: They're on the auction block. These small children of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Chalifoux of Chicago, Illinois. For long months 40 year old Ray and his wife, Lucille, 24, waged a desperate but losing battle to keep food in the mouth and a roof over their heads. Now jobless and facing eviction from their near barren flat, the Chalifoux have surrendered to their heart breaking decision. Photo shows mother sobbing as the children pose wonderingly on the steps. Left to right: Lana,6. Rae, 5. Milton, 4. Sue Ellen, 2 years old.
The parents would seem a lot less horrible if the sign said something along the lines of “children need a good home” and not that they were trying to actually sell them, idc how badly they needed the money.
Look it up, it’s a complex and horrid story and the kids have horrid memories of the homes they went too
Load More Replies...I'm not one to body shame, but as I look at t6his, read the description, see how thin these children are, then notice that mom doesn't look too underfed, I'm a bit confused. Anyone else? EDIT: I just discovered the mother, only 23 at this time, was pregnant with a fifth child, which she also sold.

The Path I Walk To Go To Work
It was like this in Melbourne when I’d finish work at 5am. You’d almost wait for a pack of zombies to start walking through like a Michael Jackson film clip
I actually LOVE walking around in places like this at night. I love the atmosphere, plus I always feel more at ease at night, at least if I'm in an urban area.
couple years ago my and my BF were living in this new apartment building and basically the street around was just warehouses, not very well lit....I used to work day or night shifts from 7 to 7 so in winter it was dark in the morning and dark in the evening, I would just listen to music very loud and walk that street very fast :D
Found This At An An Antique Flea Market , I Should Have Bought It
Yes you should have! If it was me I'd have put it right by my front door to scare off solicitors, evangelicals, and unexpected visits from annoying family members.
An Abandoned Funeral Home In The South. This One Had Human Cremains And A Hearse Left Behind
I would love to own a hearse. Plenty of room in the back, well maintained, never driven like a hot rod.
I had to google 'cremains'. Never heard it before. If anyone else hasn't, it's cremated remains of a person. Creepy.
The amount of cremains left by families at active funeral home would shock you. Many families never come and collect them. Where i worked there were hundreds of them never collected by their families, some further back than 100 years ago
Known As "The Pioneers Defense," This Creepy Historical Image Was Captured In 1937 By Russian Photographer Viktor Bulla
AI summary: While there was no formal "Leningrad Pioneer Defence Academy," the term likely refers to the civil defense drills conducted for young members of the Vladimir Lenin All-Union Pioneer Organization in the 1930s. These drills trained children in defensive measures in anticipation of a potential conflict. A notable example is a 1937 drill in Leningrad where young pioneers wore gas masks.

What Is This?
I found this missing person‘s at a parking lot at Best Buy. I thought it was another normal missing persons flyer, but until I took a closer look I noticed the weird picture the description and the additional info. Is this some promotion for like a movie or an ARG?
I see they let my Ex wife out again. I woke up one night to find her with my socks covering her hands and she was scraping at the wall with a spatula because of the bugs. I asked about the socks and she said that's to keep them from jumping off of her back onto the wall. I took her to the Hospital right then. I knew she was using for a long time but really wanted my kids to have both parents as I was an only child, never met my Dad. What I learned: You can't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm. So glad it's over.

When 9 Pillars Of Light Appeared In The Night Sky Above A Coastal Japanese Town
They're caused by light reflecting off ice crystals in the atmosphere and back through gaps in the clouds. The light source is the high-intensity lights used by fishing boats to attract fish. You can see the glow of the boats' lights along the horizon, and they're so bright that they are illuminating the bottom of the clouds.
That was my 1st thought and I haven't even seen the show

The Trophy Heads Of The Māori
Long before European colonizers arrived in New Zealand, the native Māori people were preserving the severed heads of the fallen. Known as mokomokai, the heads were chopped off, boiled, smoked, dried in the Sun, and dipped in shark oil before being displayed or paraded around like trophies.
Bison Hunting
If it moves, k**l it; if it doesn't, chop it down. Not sure people have changed much - there's just not a lot left to k**l or cut down.
It was a deliberate attempt to make the bison extinct because the Native Americans relied on them for so much of their life (hunting them for food, shelter, etc). Drive the bison into extinction and the Native Americans will either follow them into oblivion or be forced onto the reservations.
