Callina Liang is stepping into one of gaming’s most recognizable roles as Chun-Li in the upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie.
Set in 1993 and drawing on the visual aesthetic of Super Street Fighter II, the film follows estranged martial artists Ryu and Ken Masters as Chun-Li recruits them to compete in the World Warrior Tournament.
What begins as a global martial arts showdown soon becomes entangled with a criminal conspiracy involving the shadowy organization Shadaloo and its ruthless leader, M. Bison.
For Liang, the role marks a major step in her rising career.
Before landing the part of the iconic martial artist, the Canadian actress gained attention for her performance in the 2024 psychological horror film Presence.
Now, she is taking on one of Street Fighter’s most physically demanding characters, putting herself through an intense transformation to bring Chun-Li’s powerful physique and fighting style to the big screen.
The muscular transformation didn’t happen overnight.
The 26-year-old also studied every one of Chun-Li’s moves to make her performance game-accurate for fans
Liang undertook an intensive physical regimen specifically designed to recreate Chun-Li’s powerful legs and athletic build for the live-action adaptation.
Speaking to Empire in August, Callina explained that her preparation focused heavily on strengthening her legs because kicking is central to the character’s fighting style.
“I strengthened my legs a lot and changed my diet drastically,” the actress said. “But it worked. By the end of the shoot, my thighs had grown six-and-a-half centimeters each.”
Her training also went far beyond conventional gym workouts.

Liang said she spent two hours each day training in Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Wushu, disciplines that helped her build the strength and movement required for Chun-Li’s demanding fight sequences.
The physical transformation also required a major change to her diet.
“When I was bulking, I ate 12 eggs a day,” Callina said. “Every two hours I had to have a meal, and I was on the verge of throwing up.”
Despite how difficult the routine became, she said the results ultimately showed in her physique.

Her reported 6.5-centimeter increase on each thigh, combined with the hours of martial arts training, helped her achieve the powerful silhouette associated with Chun-Li in the games.
The months of preparation became a new talking point after recent behind-the-scenes images showed Liang in full Chun-Li costume.
The photos highlighted her muscular legs and overall transformation, prompting some online viewers to wonder whether her appearance had been digitally altered or enhanced for the movie.
Callina appeared to address those doubts directly in an Instagram Story, sharing a short clip of herself in costume alongside the message, “I don’t have time to photoshop ok.”
The post quickly circulated across social media, as fans reacted to the actress shutting down the speculation herself, with many praising her for taking the role so seriously.
One fan joked, “It’s actually hilarious how every single dollar Street Fighter will earn at the box office can almost solely be attributed to Liang’s thighs. I don’t remember seeing anyone excited about this film before she started carrying the marketing on her back.”
Another viewer said, “100% They nailed the casting with her. The thighs can handle that type of pressure I’m sure.”
“The trailers sold me but what she is doing is just the cherry on top. Girl understood the assignment,” remarked a third.
Others expressed, “Usually I don’t really care that much about faithful-looking actors in live-action adaptations but oh my god they just straight up found Chun Li in real life for this.”

Fans think Callina’s impressive transformation may have already become one of the movie’s biggest selling points
Callina’s preparation was not limited to changing her body.
She also immersed herself in the Street Fighter games to understand exactly how Chun-Li moves.
Rather than simply learning the choreography handed to her for the movie, the actress said she went directly to the source material and studied the character’s movements herself.
“I downloaded every single version of Street Fighter onto a PS5, and I recorded all of Chun-Li’s moves during fights on my phone in slow-mo, so I could play them back and study them,” she told Empire magazine.
That meant analyzing Chun-Li’s kicks, stances, and attack sequences frame by frame so Liang could reproduce the character’s movements on screen.
The approach makes particular sense for a character whose identity is so closely tied to her fighting style.
Chun-Li has been known for her powerful kicks since her debut in Street Fighter II, and the new movie is bringing some of those signature moves into a live-action setting.
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film is scheduled to hit theaters and IMAX on October 16, 2026.

As someone who grew up with the Street Fighter games and who absolutely loved that there were strong, fierce female characters you could fight as in the games, I am VERY excited for this movie. I saw the trailer recently and was laughing and crying - I was a lonely, nerdy, weird child and video games were something I could lose myself in. I don't even care if the plot is thin (hell, the game's OG plot is pretty much your basic "fight against evil" story anyway), I just want some puns, some great action moves, one-liners that are so bad they're funny, and some nostalgic nods to the original game, and I'll be happy.
