Bride Worried A Wheelchair Will Ruin Photo Aesthetics, Shows Her True Face To The Groom
Elderly man in a wheelchair looks out a window, reflecting on his future after a bride with twisted values made a messed up request.

Bride Worried A Wheelchair Will Ruin Photo Aesthetics, Shows Her True Face To The Groom

Many brides strive for perfection when it comes to their wedding photos. ‘Candid’ poses, co-ordinated outfits, gorgeous scenery and a photographer who captures all the pretty details are all par for the course. But some really take it way too far.

A bride has left people shocked after requesting that one of the groomsmen be excluded from the photos. Her reason? His ‘clunky’ wheelchair will ruin the symmetry of the the pics. When her fiance didn’t agree with her, she lost it. It was at this point, the groom realized he might not actually truly know the woman he’s marrying.

Despite how far we’ve come, there are still a lot of “isms” in the world, and ableism is one of them

Access Living defines ableism as the “discrimination of and social prejudice against people with disabilities based on the belief that typical abilities are superior.” In other words, it’s when disabled people are treated differently, or less-than, because of their disability.

Ableism has many different faces, and often, it hides behind those who pretend not to discriminate.

“Nondisabled people may express explicitly favorable beliefs and feelings regarding disability while still harboring automatic, nonconscious, and decidedly negative (implicit) attitudes,” explains Dana S. Dunn, a professor and chair of psychology at Moravian University in Pennsylvania. “They remain unaware that their implicit attitudes affect their behavior toward disabled persons, overriding any positivity tied to their explicit attitudes.

Dunn says that prejudice and discrimination aimed at disabled people often comes with a patronizing desire to “cure” their disability and make them “normal.”

According to the expert, there are many factors that contribute to ableism.

One is when nondisabled people become anxious or awkward around persons with disabilities and don’t know how to act. Another is social and cultural conditioning or norms, whereby they think that people who are familiar or similar to them are good, and others aren’t. Then there the outdated and incorrect “moral” beliefs about disability. For example, that someone is in a wheelchair as punishment for their sins.

Dunn says certain people also hold hierarchical attitudes toward disability. They wrongly believe that some disabilities (e.g., physical ones) are viewed as more acceptable than others (e.g., mental or intellectual disabilities).

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control, around 1 in 4 American adults have some sort of disability.

Despite this, many are met with hurdles when trying to navigate daily life. One survey found that 60.4% of respondents with mobility disabilities struggled to, or couldn’t, enter a public building due to missing wheelchair ramps, automatic doors, or elevators.

“A wheelchair is not a convenient accessory”: people had lots to say about the bride’s behavior

If my fiancée came to me with ableist c**p like that, I would treat it as a lucky escape. And I wouldn't keep my reasons for walking away private either: let everyone see what a nasty piece of work she is.

I was once a groomsman for a wedding. The week before, a zit on my chin (think between actual chin and lower lip) ruptured and became infected. It was monstrous! I offered to remove myself from the wedding party, but neither the groom nor the bride would allow it. And the bride fidn't even like me. But she knew right from wrong. We ended up using vouverup for the zit and an airbrush for the photos. Good times. Bride and I still don't like each other, but we do respect each other in the process of that dislike.

The thing is NOBODY cares about those wedding photos except the bride and/or groom (for sure the bride in this case). As shallow as it (and that's the main problem), the other ridiculous thing is that the bride is so full of herself that she thinks other people care about these photos. Most people will look at them exactly zero or one times and never think about them again. The couple's parents might be an exception. But I didn't hear them weigh in and say they thought having Tyler in the photos would ruin it. Does she think the photos are going to be shared with the world in National Geographic or People magazine?

My husband's best man was clearly autistic, struggling with his sexualty , scared to bring his new bf to an event with lots of people. Also a burgeoning furry. He said it would help his confidence to wear his (brown, fluffy) tail. So Tail it was, and he looked so happy in the photos. The only thing that matters about wedding photos is how wide are the smiles. (My sister has a wedding photo where the 2 MILs look like they're about to punch each other)

Weddings seem to bring out the worst in people sometimes. No one but the couple care about the bridesmaids, grooms, decor, or anything else but witnessing people they love get married and then have a party. People might remember some memorable moments, they couldn't care less about all of the details the couple put into the wedding. People seem to lose perspective when it comes to weddings. Not the photos. Those are generally only for the family and maybe close friends.

When do you look at wedding pictures? I mean, really look at them? Most people only display that one, beautiful, usually very staged picture of bride and groom at some wonderful scene. The rest will be tucked away in some album, only to be pulled back up/out when you get nostalgic and/or want to better remember who was there for you that day.

I do disagree that you never look at the photos a second time. I think I practically wore out my parent's album looking at it growing up, and now that they are getting on in years, we look at the pics and they tell my brother and I stories about the family no longer with us.
