As someone who has been in an unsuccessful long-distance relationship before, I wouldn’t recommend it. With minimal talking, miscommunication, short monthly visits, and too much waiting, the challenges are numerous. Not that my ex cheated on me, but distance definitely brings insecurity, and I think it’s not really worth the trouble.

One woman vented online how her long-distance relationship also failed miserably. She opened Facebook and got slammed by a photo of her boyfriend making out with another woman. Obviously, she dumped him, but decided to reach out to the lady in question. Scroll down to uncover what happened when she told her the truth about the guy.

Infidelity is one of the major problems faced by long-distance couples

Some long-distance relationships can really thrive. But it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. After all, every bond is unique, and different people have different needs. However, LDRs are more common than we would think. Research indicates that 14 million couples (or 28 million individuals) in the U.S. are in a long-distance relationship. Also, the success rate of these relationships is 58%-60%.

No matter the success rate, there’s no denying that there are many challenges these couples face, and infidelity is one of them. In 2024, researchers surveyed 7,392 Americans across the country about their experiences with long-distance relationships. Cheating was reported in 22% of these relationships. Either the respondent or their partner cheated, or both.

According to therapist Dr. Dana McNeil, “out of sight, out of mind” is often a reality for many long-distance relationships. She stresses that the reason most of us get into a relationship is so that we can have a person by our side who is there both emotionally and physically to weather the storms of life with.

The temptation to physically connect with another person who can hug you when you have a bad day, put their arm around you and snuggle on the couch, and have intimate moments with you has a strong influence on why infidelity occurs, especially in long-distance relationships, she continues.

“Even couples who have strong friendship and communication skills are vulnerable to having a really bad day and find themselves needing support in person. The opportunity for a physically present potential partner to come along and fill up the void created by long-distance love is real,” Dr. McNeil adds.

A partner’s infidelity can trigger serious mental health issues

Infidelity almost feels like a form of emotional cruelty because of how it impacts the victims. They unfairly face the consequences even when they’re not at fault. We all know that discovering a partner’s affair can cause serious emotional turmoil. However, experts emphasize that it can lead to symptoms like PTSD, causing anxiety, depression, and difficulty trusting others.

That’s why they have coined the term “post-infidelity stress disorder.” In the author’s case, her boyfriend’s actions could have caused distress to her as well as the other woman. Both believed they were the only ones he was with. And no matter how much we start to hate a cheater, the pain of betrayal don’t just disappear because of that hatred.

Coping and healing from infidelity can take a toll on people. Therapist Ayaka Omoto believes that prioritizing your well-being is crucial during this time. She advises engaging in activities that you know will help you feel better. Moreover, she notes that leaning on supportive family and friends also helps, as it offers new perspectives and emotional relief.

“Understanding the dynamics of infidelity and its psychological impacts can sometimes be immensely helpful. Also, working on yourself and processing difficult emotions with an individual therapist can be a healing and self-nurturing experience. Lastly, healing from infidelity doesn’t follow a strict, linear timeline, so allow yourself the time to grieve and heal,” she explains.

Well, I hope the poster and the other woman have recovered from all the pain they went through. Also, it seems like she’s in a much better place right now, as her latest post revealed that she is pregnant. Netizens were really happy for her. What are your thoughts about the story?
