Finding a parking space in a crowded area is one of the most annoying things to deal with, but that doesn’t mean able-bodied folks can take over accessible spots for themselves. Unfortunately, this is common, and people who actually need those spaces have to go to great lengths to park.

This is what a man experienced when he noticed someone taking a disabled parking spot and went to tell the guy not to do that. This interaction didn’t go well and led to a series of unfortunate events that eventually left one person in a lot of trouble.

According to the American Disabilities Association, accessible parking spots have features that are designed to make things easier for folks with impairments. The space is usually located as close to the service area as possible to provide the shortest route. They’re also wider so people with wheelchairs or ramps can get in and out easily.

To identify a disabled parking spot, look for signs or markings that differentiate it from the rest. There is usually also an access aisle nearby for increased accessibility. Shops and service centers must reserve a certain number of disabled parking spaces for their patrons.

Sometimes people park in accessible spots even though they aren’t supposed to

Even though disabled parking spaces are usually marked with signs, some folks might not know about it and may keep their vehicle there. In those cases, they may get a fine or even be told off by other customers. This can be a good learning experience, and they likely won’t repeat the behavior.

The problem is that some people deliberately park in these spots, and according to experts from Spinal Cord, these violators tend to be quite rude and arrogant. The most common offenders are people with sports cars, motorcycles, and trucks. Sometimes even cops use the disabled parking spaces, despite being the ones who have to enforce such rules.

When someone deliberately takes a disabled parking space, professionals explain that a bystander can report the offense. To do so, record the vehicle’s license plate number and description, the location, and a few details about the person committing the offense.

If someone reports a crime like this, authorities may refer it to the local council or a parking officer, who can review the evidence. From there, they might issue a notice or infringement to the offender. In most cases, officials usually notice bad parkers like this while patrolling and issue them a ticket.

Having to pay off a parking ticket can be the single best way to teach someone a lesson

According to The Hague, when someone in the Netherlands parks their vehicle somewhere they shouldn’t, they will be fined, and their car might also be towed away. They will have to pay approximately €120 for a regular violation, and €500 if they park in a disabled spot. The official name for this parking ticket in Dutch is ‘aankondiging of kennisgeving van beschikking ’, which means an announcement or notification of decision.

In this case, the entitled parker had to pay off multiple pending parking fines, including the one for illegally parking in a disabled spot; cover the damage he caused to the poster’s car; and pay a penalty for hurting the other man. All of these punishments were enough for the poster to feel that he had exacted the right amount of revenge.

You can have a special license plate rather than a blue placard. I have had the plates on my cars for over 30 years. I also carry a placard for when I'm in someone else's car.
