With the rapid development of technology, people might easily assume that maps are gradually disappearing. However, they are still thriving in the digital age, only in a more refreshed and advanced form. Some are even transformed to keep us updated with population density or what the Earth will look like in millions of years.

As a result, the World Wide Web is full of interesting and captivating maps that teach us something new and expand the way we see the world. Eager to share them with you, Bored Panda has collected the best ones that might make you see things from a different perspective. To find them, all you have to do is scroll down!

While you’re busy admiring them, don’t forget to check out a conversation with map enthusiast, artist, and cartographer Anton Thomas, who kindly agreed to answer some of our questions about all things maps.

I looked at this and thought "why are they so desperate to get right to the edge of Wisconsin". Then it dawned on me that the state border is a river, and the map doesn't include nests in the neighbouring states. LOL

There are a lot of good news actually. They just get burried under because good news don't sell as well. Do you know for a fact that the US is one of the worlds leading nations in transforming their energy usage into renewable sources?

The clean water act was tremendously important and certainly helped on a lot of things including wetland species recovery. But banning DDT is what did the heavy lifting for this and several other species suffering declines from severe eggshell thinning from this specific toxin, allowing this wonderful recovery.

I wonder there’s such a solid line up against the state line. I wonder if it’s cause of family relations (though I doubt it). Why don’t they just spread out over into the next state?

BoredPanda’s homeland!!! Vilnius is a thriving, historical city with plenty of culture, arts, food, entertainment & nightlife. Not to be dismissive of any particular place, but it’s my new “Prague.” The people are oh-so-friendly & the tourist trappings are more subdued & the scamming, pickpocketing & touting is nonexistent.

Anton Thomas’ approach to maps is one of the most unique and beautiful ones out there. The Australia-based artist hand-draws them in meticulous detail with only a pen and colored pencils. His giant map of North America took him nearly 5 years to complete and was recognized as one of the best maps of 2016 by National Geographic.

Naturally, we were curious to know what initially sparked his interest in them. He told us, “I was born and raised in New Zealand's South Island, surrounded by beautiful landscapes. This geography influenced my love of maps.

The places around us were so interesting, so rich in mood, emotion, and grandeur. I would see fictional fantasy maps in books or video games, and I loved the way geography was displayed so expressively. But then I would look outside at New Zealand, and realise I was somewhere far more amazing than fantasy. And it was all real!

From childhood, maps helped me understand reality, fall in love with the world, and instill a sense of adventure. And combining maps with illustration was a bridge between science, art, and storytelling.”

What inspires his distinct method of cartography is a love for the vast planet and all the amazing places it holds. Therefore, he strives to create maps that give off the feeling of what it’s like to be at a certain location. “Maps allow you to show this at any scale, and art allows you to bring it to life,” he adds.

Even though his maps are known for their illustrations, he’s passionate about ensuring their graphic accuracy as well. He tells us, “I want to create artistic maps that are also great educational resources. I believe art is one of the best ways to communicate science, so about 30% of my labor is pure research. When preparing a new map, I will first choose a projection - then trace that outline accurately on the drawing paper.

Taking his ‘Wild World’ map of nature as an example (which took three years), he further shares its creation process. “I chose the Natural Earth projection, printed a high-resolution base map at the drawing size, then stapled it to the back of the art paper. I then traced all the coastlines, rivers, and mountain ranges with a light pad (a tracing tool).”

When the framework is completed, he then goes region by region, continent by continent, researching and learning about the wildlife and physical geography of each place. “Our world is so complex, so filled with information, that a cartographer's job is often to choose what NOT to draw. What to omit. So it's helpful to have rules and conventions with each map, to help select the data and stories you wish to tell. Once you create these guidelines and filter out some of the noise, it's easier to see your creative opportunities,” Thomas says.

Aweful colonials though. "French West Africa", "Belgian Kongo", "German East Africa", "British East Africa". I do wonder what would have happened if Europeans hadn't taken-over.

What I find interesting is the names of the regions/countries back then. Colonial expansion and all that. But now, many of these countries have gained independence from the British overlords. An interesting.look at time in a bottle.

Worth noting how much of that map is French, as well. At that time a lot of North Africa was considered a part of France, Algeria not gaining its independence until the 1960s after a protracted civil war.

"By putting local communities in the driver's seat of the initiative, the GGWI is able to ensure that the project is tailored to the specific needs of the region. This approach has already led to the successful completion of 18% of the Great Green Wall, the restoration of over 20 million hectares of land, the creation of 350,000 jobs, the training of 10 million people in sustainable land and water management practices, and $90 million generated by project activities" ... Amazing what humans can do when they work together for the greater good. 🥰

Unfortunately the initiative is currently at risk due to terrorism, lack of political interest in the region, and that none of the Sahel countries have allocated any funding towards it, instead just waiting on funds being allocated from the AU and EU.

Norway planted many trees in Africa. They held no fruits, and depleted the groundwater. But it had "lovely", big canopies for the animals to die under. This gives me more hope.

We were also interested to know what he thought about the future of maps. He told us, “Maps are much more fundamental to our lives than we realise. Billions of us use map apps, daily. The entire field of health & medicine is across a map of the human anatomy. As long as there are different elements across a space that need representation, there will be maps.”

Even in the hypothetical world where everything would be managed by AI and there would be no need for humans to create cartographies, Thomas believes that they will retain their aesthetic, historical, and storytelling value.  “We did not stop painting when the camera was invented,” he adds.

It is arbitrary but it is also the line for Greenwich Mean Time on which longitude and World time zones are based.

Well the traditional one isn't "centered" on the UK. It would be somewhere in the Atlantic, off the west coast of Africa. And if you're referring to the Prime Meridian, it wasn't at all arbitrary: Why does the Prime Meridian run through Greenwich? There were two main reasons for the choice. The first was the fact that the USA had already chosen Greenwich as the basis for its own national time zone system. The second was that in the late 19th century, 72% of the world's commerce depended on sea-charts which used Greenwich as the Prime Meridian. The decision was based on the argument that by naming Greenwich as Longitude 0º, it would be advantageous to the largest number of people. Therefore the Prime Meridian at Greenwich became the centre of world time. https://www.rmg.co.uk/stories/topics/what-prime-meridian-why-it-greenwich

To be clear, this represented the “largest number of people” on in the sense that Western Europe & American populations were considered. Dutch, Spanish, British & other overseas territories were counted, but not their general populations. So, the idea that it served the largest population was a completely arbitrary concept of what they considered “population”. There are several books on this and just how colonial and arbitrary the decision was.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the map always looks like that and we're supposed to see it as centered on the UK 😂

“This has already been proven to be true,” he further explains. “Just look at the transition in recent decades: we no longer have to unfold road maps to plan a trip, running a finger along roads, trying to remember turnoffs. We simply enter an address in our phone and press Go.

Yet the demand for wall maps has actually become stronger. Why? Because maps are not simply tools or niche curiosities, they are one of the most fundamental methods of storytelling and communication we have. We yearn for their breadth and depth and beauty. Just think: in how many art forms can you display the whole world (albeit simplified)? We love maps because they tell the story of places, and places are fundamental to who we are.”

That is not exactly correct, there are other areas mentioned. Magog has always been identified as Scythia which is ancient Russia, Germany is mentioned in the Bible, there is a debate among scholars if Isiah mentions China. All of North Africa should be colored in, as should be Portugal and the rest of Arabia. It also mentions lands to the south of Ethiopia, meaning the rest of Africa. There is also reference to a land beyond the great sea in the west, so debate to what that means, etc. This person isnt very biblically literate

Nowadays, with the right tools, maps can be manipulated to present any information, which makes them that much more interesting and multifunctional. The majority of the maps we see on this list are cartograms that use some statistical data, such as population, survey results, or natural phenomena, and combine it with geographical location.

While regular or topographical maps prioritize geographical accuracy in terms of shape, size, and location, cartograms rescale map regions to statistical data and try to maintain geographical features as far as possible. Besides, they are a powerful tool for presenting information effectively and raising awareness of important issues like substance abuse or world poverty.

Since they combine statistical and geographical information, they can also provide insight into patterns and trends in the world around us. Combining this with their aesthetic appeal makes them a great supplement for information in newspapers, magazines, and textbooks.

The map typically used has accurate oceans. It's a half over from when traveling on ships the main way to travel between continents. The AuthaGraphy Projection, created in 1999, is considered the most accurate overall. I recommend you look it up; it sounds like you might like it.

IIRC Iron Maiden bought their own plane for the band, equipment and roadies and it was piloted by their lead singer. They toured South America and I'm not sure where else they went but the whole point was to go where fans hadn't been able to see them.

Bands with massive followings tour with at least two fleets of semi-trailer trucks and busses, one entire fleet with duplicate gear and teams traveling to the next venue while another sets up/performs/loads up. That doesn’t make it across oceans on the cheap

This kind of visualization has been used for many years, with the first reference to it dating back to at least 1870. The first specimen of its kind was published in 1876 by French statistician and geographer Pierre Émile Levasseur, who created a series of maps representing European countries as squares. They were sized and arranged in order according to their area, population, and even national budget.

He created them as teaching aids, helping children realize the size of countries and their certain characteristics. However, his technique wasn’t able to catch on, and only a few similar maps appeared in many years. The following notable development was made by Hermann Haack and Hugo Weichel, who presented election results for the German Reichstag in 1988. This time, creations alike soon emerged in the US, where they were introduced in the popular media after 1911.

Not just Sweden. It’s usually called "parental leave" nowadays and can be used by either parent. (With some exceptions. In Germany at least, a mother MUST stay at home for six weeks, to rest from the birth. After that either parent can stay at home.)

I really don't mean to be hostile, but when I was growing up in the 90s, I kept hearing great things about the US. Then I became a college student and learned of the health care system and the homelessness issue... and I don't understand how many other countries that are poor (I'm from Central America, poor af 3rd world country) have paid maternity leaves and free healthcare and the US doesn't. Sounds like just another 3rd world country to me. Someone care to explain? Because I fail to understand.

I suspect they're including all the Chateaux in France, most of which are either what in the UK would be called 'Stately Homes' or simply wine estate buildings. Other country/language naming conventions also apply.

The biggest challenge in producing them has always been drawing distorted shapes, which encouraged people to develop computer software to automate this process. Waldo R. Tobler invented one of the first algorithms in 1963, and since then, a wide variety of them has emerged. Before his work, cartograms were created by hand.

Now please overlay it with a map of the countries that give a s**t about water polo. /J It's probably an okay sport. I've never watched a game. But it's not exactly one of those sports that is hugely popular in many countries.

No, that's not what is being said at all. Europeans think the US should plan cities and infrastructures that aren't as car reliant. Expand public transport, railroads, build sidewalks, 15-minute cities etc. Noone is shocked about the fact that you drive from Utah to Arizona, they think you shouldn't have to drive from your house to the nearest supermarket or starve.

It's also wrong in the Vietnam stretch because you can take a more inland route that takes you further down to the Singapore. It's not as long as going through Russia, but you can take the Orient Express to Turkey, then from there take Trans-Asia Railway to get to Singapore.

    HTakeover

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

On the Trans-Siberian stretch, 2nd class & above have tiny token showers available shared between a couple of cabins, with how much sharing dependent on ticket price. Enough to wash some stink of at least but you're still on the hook for doing some sink laundry. Once you get to the Asia stretch, it's hit & miss depending on the specific sub-route and class ticket. Usually when you book a ticket it will factor in hotel stops overnight at additional expense though you don't have to. The Russian stretch alone is about a week long though with fewer stops so it can really get up to speed. So you can expect anywhere from 3 weeks to a couple of months depending on if you do any hotel overnights.

Yeah, most of it feeds into the Mississippi. Pretty much all of the breadbasket does. That's why it the "Mighty" Mississippi. It's a shame that most don't refer to the river that way anymore. The term seems to have gone away with the decline of shipping stuff via boat on the rivers. :/

Alaska has quite a few rivers and creeks and streams, too! You haven’t live the Alaskan life as an AK resident until you’ve gotten your fishing license and gone dipnetting! (For all those curious, it’s where large amounts of us gather at river mouths right by the ocean and stick massive nets in the water in order to catch salmon! However, it’s only available for Alaskan residents and natives!)

I wonder about the data source. I live in WA state and at least in my area I hear very little of what I assume to be Vietnamese (based on hearing it in some videos). I hear a fair bit of Chinese, what my brain calls "Russian" but might be from other countries like Ukraine, and of course Spanish. Edit: Also tagalog / cebuano but that is biased by having Filipino relatives

Looking at the stats from the link above, which is the source of this map, these percentages are extremely small compared to English and Spanish speakers. The likely jockey position relatively often depending on how fluid the population is for a state. Maryland, my state, is marked with French on this map, but Chinese has surpassed it by a fraction of percent since the map was created at least 6 years ago.

This is how Europe looked before +/- 1870. The EU, which not 1 country but a mainly economic collaboration of several countries on the European continent (to which The UK geographically belong) was started in 1951 as Montan-Union (steel & coal trading) and transformed 1957 into the EWG (Europäische Wirtschaftgemeinschaft, European Economic Union)... and exists today, with an increasing number of members, as EU.

Huh. Would have expected more density in Indiana. Every time I visit, I'm astounded by how many trees there are. I suppose those corn and soybean fields mean fewer trees. I am from one of the not very dense regions, and every time I venture into the vast green lands of the east coast I am shocked by the greenery.

The only native (not planted) trees in North Dakota were in the river bottoms. Early settlers passed through because the believed that land that did not support trees wouldn't support agriculture. As an aside, when the settlers got to the Red River, there was a big sign saying "turn South" and those that could read did.

Thanks for pointing that out. Now, I don't live in the US, but without proper medication thereof, the chronic pain would make me consider being done. It's very much like a depression, or may evolve into one, as it makes you not do that much. Eventually, the pain will also be part of your dreams. Whoever reaches that, and hasn't done anything about it yet - do it as early as possible, as it only ever gets worse on its own, and whatever you spare yourself from taking, will be outweighed by loss of quality of life, and you'll exceed the dose you'd have needed starting earlier in no time at all. Delaying that has nothing for it, and more than enough against. That said, of course, Opioides are severe medication and not to be used lightheartedly, but they're not evil, and used in a controlled way, they're pretty much life-saving for millions of people - not that you die from chronic pain, but what you get, then, isn't life, it's just that you're not dead yet.

I can see why it's not a sham. People in cities don't understand what people in rural areas need and vice versa. There is a reason eastern Oregon and Washington are trying to succeed from their western, more populated half. The entire US can't be ran by a handful of cities.

There's obviously more in there, including large suburbs I didn't have the characters to include. Missing a ton of big cities in California, Florida, and the northeast megalopolis. Also with the huge cities there's always gonna be huge suburbs as well. For example, Chicago has Naperville, Aurora, Rockford, and Evanston that are all on this map but I just can't name everything. Houston has Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, etc. And some are just as big but I had to skip, like Tampa isn't just Tampa, it's also St. Pete and Clearwater. Miami isn't just Miami, it's Ft. Lauderdale and West Palm and Port St. Lucie.

Gerrymandering is redistricting based on political affiliation, not population density. Every state has a set number of districts and all districts must be of approximately equal population. Gerrymandering is trying to draw the lines so that each district will be primarily aligned with a political party. This map only shows population density, not political alignment so does not contain anywhere near enough info to be useful in a Gerrymandering attempt

I'd be interested in how this was proved. The travelling salesman problem is one of the most notoriously difficult to solve in mathematics, and with this many data points it would need a colossal amount of computer power.
