To Collect Rent On A House You Live In For Free
Just saw a video that looks like the mom's pov, same scenario: she never told the SD she didn't own the house cause she knew he wouldn't live there. SD eventualy started paying rent. Son saved the money expecting an apology from SD but it never happened cause he 'was the man of the house and felt disrespected' After some other stuff that happened mom filed for divorce.
Wow, this guy moved in and it didn't occur to him once to ask whether he should help pay rent or mortgage. If he had done that, he would've learned the status of the house. This man has the balls to learn anybody independence?
Oh, I remember this one on reddit. The son charged the a$$hole stepfather to pay $1,000 a month and put it in a separate account. If the stepfather apologized for being a douche, he was going to give it all back. A$$hole never apologized, so he keeps paying. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
Oh gosh! Thanks for letting us know about that! I'm glad he keeps paying! 🙂

Sounds like they don‘t have a good relationship anyway. So, go gor it. If it really was for helping the kid be self reliant, they should have talked it through with the Mom first and then talked to the kid together. It sounds like stepdad did in on his own though without informing the Mom. Seams fishy as for the reasons.
What better way to show independence than by collecting rent on your property. The fact that he would dare ask for rent without talking to the mom first indicates a serious problem with his judgment.
I saw this post on a tikitok app a few days ago. It was told from the mom's perspective. Apparently the son's dad was loaded and inherited everything to his son so he'll be set for adulthood. The step dad had no idea of any of this and it turned into a whole back and forth ending in the mom divorcing the step dad, gaining custody of the younger kids, step dad having to move in with HIS parents whom, hilariously, after finding out the entire story, sided with the son and kicked stepdad out of their home too. Last update said step dad was living with a friend of his and the older son was taking care of the family perfectly fine while going to college.
Who pays the property taxes & utilities & does the maintenance? If 18 wants rent, I guess 18 is taking on the costs of owning the property too.
Shouldn’t the SD consulted with the mother BEFORE telling them to pay rent? You can’t make decisions about raising your step-kid without speaking with their actual parent first. This is also on top of the fact that he clearly wasn’t contributing to the rent/mortgage himself either or else he would have known.
he can suck it in my opinion, he asked you you asked him (plus, he asked you to pay rent when he knew he didn't own the house)
I really hope that kid doesn't back down and makes them pay rent, lol. Or they can feed and clothe him for free. Quid pro quo.
There is nothing wrong with asking an 18-year old to pitch in as an adult if they aren't still studying. However, this is obviously not the situation here and the Mom is very much at fault for not divulging to step-dad earlier and step dad totally our otf line by not running this past mom first (as he would be even if biological dad: They are joint parent decisions). Collect the rent and invest it responsibly. Then, if ever your Mom decides she's had enough of her marriage at some point, you can help her with her down payment for a place of her own. Or keep it as savings for your own future childrens' education fund.
F*ck him. Definitely tell them (both) that they will either start paying rent or you will start the eviction process. I hate freeloaders.
You gave them the option as the legal owner of the property. They need to cough up some money each month. Even if is just a minimum of what a normal rent for your area is. Show them you can be an adult by acting like a good landlord.
Now that you are a legal adult, the house should be out of trust and in your name. It might be spite and you should think hard. However, if your young brain can get past your "evil Stepfather" mind set, do think of your Mother.
HAH! This actually depends on their financial situation. If I were the kid I'd be asking for a small rent sufficient to cover taxes and insurance. Not sure who's paying that now though.
kick them out. You need to learn to be an adult. Alone. In your own house! ;-)
I really can't with the step dad in this one. No info on how long the mom and SD had been dating, but 12-13 years old is an age where you can't easily take on a parenting role with a child. Yet SD thought it was fine for him to make a parenting decision like demanding rent all on his own - because if he'd talked about it with the mom beforehand, he'd've found out the house was OP's. Makes me think there were a lot of other instances where SD tried to parent when it wasn't his place to begin with.
He should teach by example. Stepfather needs to pay rent to show OP how to adult
Establish a fair market value, offer him a discount on back rent for all the time he's stayed there, get a deposit, and move out on it. Come up with a lease agreement and index annual rent increases based on inflation plus mark up, the same goddamn thing his generation would do. Either that or you can evict them and put it on the market for people willing to pay. It'll teach your step dad a life lesson and help his character.
Assumptions are the mother of all... I wonder if he contributed to the mortgage, as he thought it was his wife's house? Probably not. Yet he expected his stepson to contribute to filling his pockets with cash. He may be looking for somewhere to rent soon! Lol
Step-dad just can't accept he messed up. Make him pay rent & don't back down. He can always find somewhere else to live.
Tell him you're being an adult and asking for rent from the freeloader.
Doesn't matter if he's asking for rent because Woody Woodpecker told him to. Pay up or get out.
Bro f**k keeping the family together this dude told you that when you turned 18 you had to pay rent but when it was him on that situation he need time nah bro f**k him ans evict his a*s
Make him pay something, he was gonna be a jerk and make you pay him so he can pay you.
Presumably you should be paying rent to whoever it is that pays all the bills. Even if you own the house that doesn't mean you just live there for free.
I'd never charge my child rent money, it's their house too, no matter whose name is on the mortgage.
Load More Replies...We often hear that we need to experience failure to learn from our mistakes, grow, and be better. Understandably, knowing the reason for our lack of success may prevent us from repeating the same errors in the future.
But is that really true? It turns out that when it comes to human psychology, things aren’t as simple as they may seem. In a 2022 paper, researchers claim that most people are highly resistant to learning from their failures. And when they do, they tend to take away the wrong lessons.

The first reason for such human behavior is associated with emotions. Our species is mostly invested in feeling good about ourselves. Being a failure isn’t really compatible with this; that’s why we tend to walk away from it and protect our egos.
The authors further explain, “Contemplating failure is hard because failure is a threatening experience. Indeed, when a failure threatens people’s sense of self-worth, they can react in ways that undermine not just their learning but also their mental and physical health in an effort to preserve their sense of self.”

They continue saying, “Thus, although people may want to learn from failure, they often hold a competing goal that wins out: to feel good about themselves. The desire to see oneself as a good, competent person is a strong motivational force. When this goal triumphs, people disengage from failure."

The second factor that influences our dissociation from failure is cognitive. We tend not to like hearing information that contradicts our beliefs and expectations. Our lack of success does exactly that—disagrees with our anticipation for triumph. Why take on a project you know you won’t shine at?

Pretty sure it’s a plant-based plastic alternative meant to keep the straw clean. They typically dissolve/decompose very rapidly and can be placed in compost & mulch. They have these at the Honolulu airport lounges and there’s a placard that explains this, but I don’t remember what it said exactly.
“No one aims for failure. People almost never expect to fail. This makes learning from failure cognitively difficult because people tend to overlook contradictory or unexpected information.” In addition, when we feel defeated, we might start losing capacity and control. Therefore, it further diminishes our commitment and reduces the odds of success in the future.

What’s more, learning from a negative experience like a failure is a more demanding task than taking something away from success, which tires our cognitive system that has adapted to save energy.
“For failure to be informative, people need to deduce what an incorrect response teaches about the correct response. Learning by elimination requires more mental effort. Because people are cognitive misers, they struggle to see the information in failure more than the information in success.”

However, there’s a way to improve our chances of learning from our mistakes, despite the inborn emotional and cognitive barriers. The first strategy that the authors propose is to remove the ego from failure. This can be done by learning from other people’s mistakes that we’re not personally and emotionally involved in. Another option is to work up our ego so it can withstand the possibility of failure. Improving our competence, knowledge, and expertise is a great way to do it. That’s why experts are often better at learning from failure, as they’re less threatened by it.

To overcome the cognitive barriers, it may be useful to eliminate any tasks that may overload our brains. This means putting more time and practice into learning from failure instead of trying to juggle five other things at the same time.

In general, learning from failure is important, but it doesn’t happen without effort. Training ourselves to overcome the emotional and cognitive hurdles helps us reflect on our lessons and improves the odds of success.
