So I'm really ticked off and need to both vent and ask if AITA (am I the @sshole). We have new neighbors in our building that haven't bothered to introduce themselves. One of my neighbors went downstairs this afternoon and found his washer being used (all units have their own washer/dryer hookups in the basement of our building). He politely explained to the new neighbors that each unit has their own hookups, told them which belonged to who and pointed out where their washer/dryer hookups are. He made them take their unfinished wash out so he could do his laundry. They waited until they thought I had finished my laundry and then proceeded to use mine without asking. I didn't say anything to the new neighbors but took their clothes from my dryer and put them in their laundry basket. Started another load of wash and messaged our landlord to complain. Who does stuff like that when they not only didn't ask permission, but haven't even bothered to introduce themselves first. Did I miss the memo that it has become acceptable to use someone else's belongings without asking? And AITA for just taking their clothes out of my dryer without saying anything? (Personally I thought my response was more restrained than taking their clothes and throwing them in the dumpster considering this was not a misunderstanding on their part but intentional.)

I think your boyfriend making them take their clothes out in the middle of a wash cycle is a bit petty. Only because they're new to the building, so I'd give them some leeway. But them using your washer/dryer after they were told of the rules, that's inconsiderate. I'm going with NTA, but I do have a couple questions. Is their washer next to yours? Because if so, I'd understand the mix up. Have you spoken to them since then?

First off it wasn't my BF but my downstairs neighbor who caught them the first time. Secondly, you have to supply your own washer and dryer and they do not have either. Also, the hookups are clearly marked for which apartment and the hookups are several feet apart so even if they happened to buy the exact same washer and dryer that I have, there should be no confusion. Lastly, no as this just happened last night I have not spoken to them, nor have they made any attempt to contact me.

NTA. They should not be using your machines without asking. That is really odd to me that you would have hookups in a community space but have to provide your own machines. I would have padlocks installed on my machines and keep them locked at all times. You can get appliance locks that have a key and would keep your neighbors from using your machines. Added bonus is that if your clothes are locked in there, no one can move them.

We haven't had this problem except one other time when we were not locking the basement door and caught people bringing their laundry from a nearby building. I ordered 2 keylocks to attach to the washer and dryer and thanks for your suggestion about the locks.
