It’s no big secret that every human is entitled to hold their own opinions, even if they’re highly controversial.
One of the topics that constantly seems to be making the internet rounds is children – specifically, people calling on businesses to stop bending over backward for parents and to start offering a bunch of random services, such as flights, pools, cinema screenings, amusement parks, high-end restaurants, etc., as child-free ones.
Well, the star of today’s article is no exception. Kitch Catterall, who goes by the name Baby Soja online, recently took to TikTok to propose the development of adult-only neighborhoods.
The Melbourne woman recorded a video of herself at the gym’s parking lot, venting about “screaming” children as she finally reached her boiling point. Many netizens sided with the idea – however, some didn’t quite agree with it.

“I would like to know when somebody is planning on opening an adult-only suburb where everything in it is only for adults?” the woman said rhetorically at the beginning of her video. Kitch revealed that she is sick and tired of having to tolerate screaming kids wherever she goes. The TikToker shared that when she went for a swim, she noticed that the little ones practically overtook the lap pool despite having their own one. She argued that “evil,” children-hating people like her should have their own suburb where they can be undisturbed.

As we all know, the internet can be a nasty place, and even if you’re just expressing your personal viewpoint and doing no harm to anyone, people will still criticize you. Kitch received a fair amount of backlash and even had to specify that she was “not bagging on families existing, just sometimes want a quiet break” to a mum who happened to side with her proposal.
One commenter sent the TikToker straight to Antarctica, presumably to finally get away from the noisy children; another one said that the ultimate child-free place is already a thing and is called a retirement village. The point is, it seems like a lot of people are quick to label you as this wicked villain for wanting to live a life free of having to encounter screaming and tantrum-throwing kids, but is it really such a bad idea?

The woman made a follow-up video where she further explained her position. “So many people [are] pressed in the comments. Like, sorry that some people don’t want to be around kids 24/7. I’m not saying kids shouldn’t be allowed at the pool, it’d just be nice if there were more places that were JUST for adults to enjoy, and that includes parents wanting a break from their kids too. Chill.”
Wanting an occasional break, especially if you yourself are child-free, is not criminal. Perhaps it was the delivery that incited all the hate, or maybe the internet is just not a friendly place – whatever it is, we can all agree that a kid-free pool is a heavenly idea. Always.

The problem is a lack of child spaces. Not spaces where your kids are allowed, places optimised FOR children. When I was a kid, there were three or four play places on the local high street that were free to use, very cheap, or in stores/cafes and were free with purchase. Also, a lot of places like banks and cafes had a small area with toys (like the bead tracks, or legos) for kids to entertain themselves whilst their parents did boring adult stuff. These give the kids an opportunity to let off steam, and thus they're less screamy and annoying. Nowadays, these things are all gone because they don't make lots of profit, so public spaces with kids in are full of overstimulated, under-exercised children who are loud and cranky.
Yes! This is 100% an issue - I completely agree kids need to let off steam. Even screaming once in awhile. But we need places for them to do it where it's okay, and safe. Not just open your back door and let loose the little he11ions... take them to a park or something. It's the same as if I don't walk my dog enough and he's fussy and barking. We all share one world. And there are various anoying factors all around us. I don't mind kids, I mind a******s and a*****e parents who don't parent their children. But you can't control everything in your soroundings. There's traffic, drills, landmowers, dogs barking, teenagers playing loud music etc. The best solution for this girl is to marry a bilionaire and live on some huge property or to go live in Alaska, Siberia, Tibet... If the adults in the neighborhood are responsible adults, then children will not be a problem. If the adults in the neighborhood are not responsible adults, you've got big problems whether there are children there or not.
I completely agree. Children have taken over every space and their behavior has become much worse. Children used to know how to be seen and not heard (like keep your voice down inside and don't disturb other people), but now they are just obnoxious. I'm currently in a flat that's part of a block that surrounds a playground (moved there out of nessecity at the time) and for someone who's pretty sensitive to sound, the screeching is absolute torture. As a single, 35+ woman I can say this with all the honesty in my heart, I would love an adult only neighborhood. I hate kids and haven't had any of my own for a reason, so how come every time I go somewhere with my friends (non-alcoholic places) I have to put up with other people's? From restaurants, to movie theaters, to grocery/clothing shopping, someone has brought their kid and they're completely unable to keep the damn thing quiet. So I would pack up my animals and move in a heartbeat to an adult only neighborhood, just add my name to the wait list for it.
I totally get this, as there are times I want to tape the mouths of my kids shut just to get some quiet. But, I think it needs to be recognized that the problem isn't the kids - it's the parents who let the kids behave this way in public. Yes, the brach, a playground, etc are places where kids can and should be allowed to run around and be loud, but, they should have been taught to do that with consideration to the other people there, or be supervised by a parent/adult making sure they are considerate for the other people. So many time individual groups get blamed for problems (it's the kids/parents/boomers/millennial, etc who cause the problem) when really it's a lack of common courtesy and consideration for other people that is causing the problem.

Kids free or noise free? Adults can make an awful lot of noise at ungodly hours too. Shift work and hanging outside chatting. Getting up early and revving your scooter. Parties with drunk and shouting people. Tv"s that's too loud or during summer the whole night ancient Bollywood movies so you can't sleep with your window open....
It has to be kid free to be noise free. Well it's not an infants fault, they are noisy and will wake up neighbors. When the parents let it cry for 2 hours while trying to sleep in the middle of the night it makes it worse. Child free and noise 10 to 10 or get evicted would be perfect

I was a food server early on & kids were well behaved for the most part however now days they've run amok. It seems no one teaches their kids manners & believe in permissive disaplain, or in other words parents don't want to be bothered.

Load More Replies... I have 2 small kids and felt sorry for my neighbours during the lockdowns. My little ones had nowhere to go to and no way to let the excess energy out. I installed a trampoline and some other garden playground fixtures for them, so they spent the day outside often screaming and chanting nonsense. We tried to keep the volume down initially but gave up, they're kids doing kids stuff after all. There are another 2 families in the little otherwise quiet street we live in. I totally see the point in freaking out if you're trying to chill in your garden. On the other hand my kids are very well behaved in public places and we had lots of work in this. Even I hate when kids are running around screaming in a shop or worst like restaurant. It is the parents responsibility and I think sh*try parents should be ashamed when their kids can't behave

Fellow humans- I am really distressed that no one seems to see that the actual problem is awful behavior from the children, which stems directly from awful parenting/behavior of the adults around them. A well behaved and polite child is wonderful to interact with (or don't interact with! Kids are capable of pulling out a book and chilling, IF TRAINED). I have kids, I love kids, I am a teacher and work with kids, but it is infuriating and mind blowing to see how many kids can act like little AHs and no one stops them or escorts them away from polite company. That's just bad training and that kid will grow into an adult who is just as much a selfish AH. Look inward, Society! Kids are just doing what they are being trained to do. Train them differently and we HUMANS can all live together on planet earth.

More times than not it's parents letting their little spawn do whatever they please. When my son was age 4-12, he was an absolute angel in public. Never ran around & screamed, never threw a fit if he didn't get his way, was never a spoiled brat. I was single mom & made sure he had manners. He's almost 37 & still a very well mannered young man. It begins with the parents. Honestly, when I'm in Walmart or any other store, it's as if every child in the county is there, screaming at the top of their lungs & parents doing nothing to curtail that horrid behavior. Would such a community allow a "buffer" of space of sorts for those who were child-free, but an unplanned kid happened? Like, say at the middle of the area there were strict child-free. If something happened and a kid came into the picture, the parents could move to the outer side of the radius, a transition spot until they get another place. Seems softer than a straight eviction. Coming from someone who doesn't have kids, doesn't want to, has an IUD and whose husband already had a vasectomy.

The folks behind us have a pool. Their kids are fairly noisy using it but it's after the kids go to bed that the REAL noise starts! The parents turn up the loud music and use foul language while drinking with their friends. I don't know how their kids sleep through it because I can't.
I'd sign up for this like a shot. My new downstairs neighbours have five kids of various ages, with the youngest two being at the Running Around Stupid Screaming Like A Banshee stage. I'm all for kids being kids, but there's a time and a place for it - and it's not at 10pm on a weeknight when I'm in bed trying to sleep because I've got work in the morning and have to be up at 6am.

I don't blame children or animals for being loud and obnoxious; it's absolutely the parents. The real problem is that there's no system in place to ensure that people raise their kids well and what rules exist about people conducting themselves safely and considerately are largely unenforced, especially now. Daily, I see that people generally do as they please, uncaring of the effect it has on others. So, of course children and pets are allowed to behave badly.
Here is the issue for those who think this could actually happen. You buy a house in a kid free zone, and surprise 2 years later you are pregnant. Now what do you do, sell the house? What if the housing market is down and you can't even sell it for enough to pay off the mortgage. What happens if you say screw it I'm staying and having my kid here, do you get harassed and fined by a-hole hoa's, are there criminal zoning violations? What and how do you think this could ever work. The senior living works cause nobody is getting pregnant at 55+, but younger just won't work. The best you could do is rent an adult only apartment where if pregnant you just move and get evicted if you don't by the time of the birth. Even then evicting new mothers is a difficult prospect.

Kids shouldn’t be allowed to live in apartments unless it’s the first or second floor too. There were some gross kids playing in the grocery store last time I went and nobody stopped them. I totally get this, as there are times I want to tape the mouths of my kids shut just to get some quiet. But, I think it needs to be recognized that the problem isn't the kids - it's the parents who let the kids behave this way in public. Yes, the brach, a playground, etc are places where kids can and should be allowed to run around and be loud, but, they should have been taught to do that with consideration to the other people there, or be supervised by a parent/adult making sure they are considerate for the other people. So many time individual groups get blamed for problems (it's the kids/parents/boomers/millennial, etc who cause the problem) when really it's a lack of common courtesy and consideration for other people that is causing the problem.

It has to be kid free to be noise free. Well it's not an infants fault, they are noisy and will wake up neighbors. When the parents let it cry for 2 hours while trying to sleep in the middle of the night it makes it worse. Child free and noise 10 to 10 or get evicted would be perfect

Load More Replies... I have 2 small kids and felt sorry for my neighbours during the lockdowns. My little ones had nowhere to go to and no way to let the excess energy out. I installed a trampoline and some other garden playground fixtures for them, so they spent the day outside often screaming and chanting nonsense. We tried to keep the volume down initially but gave up, they're kids doing kids stuff after all. There are another 2 families in the little otherwise quiet street we live in. I totally see the point in freaking out if you're trying to chill in your garden. On the other hand my kids are very well behaved in public places and we had lots of work in this. Even I hate when kids are running around screaming in a shop or worst like restaurant. It is the parents responsibility and I think sh*try parents should be ashamed when their kids can't behave

Fellow humans- I am really distressed that no one seems to see that the actual problem is awful behavior from the children, which stems directly from awful parenting/behavior of the adults around them. A well behaved and polite child is wonderful to interact with (or don't interact with! Kids are capable of pulling out a book and chilling, IF TRAINED). I have kids, I love kids, I am a teacher and work with kids, but it is infuriating and mind blowing to see how many kids can act like little AHs and no one stops them or escorts them away from polite company. That's just bad training and that kid will grow into an adult who is just as much a selfish AH. Look inward, Society! Kids are just doing what they are being trained to do. Train them differently and we HUMANS can all live together on planet earth.

I don't like (most) kids but I'm not evil. I don't like loud, obnoxious, know-it-all, messy, inconsiderate people. If this means 98% of all kids, then, well, those I don't care for. But it applies for everyone, not just kids.
More times than not it's parents letting their little spawn do whatever they please. When my son was age 4-12, he was an absolute angel in public. Never ran around & screamed, never threw a fit if he didn't get his way, was never a spoiled brat. I was single mom & made sure he had manners. He's almost 37 & still a very well mannered young man. It begins with the parents. Honestly, when I'm in Walmart or any other store, it's as if every child in the county is there, screaming at the top of their lungs & parents doing nothing to curtail that horrid behavior. I completely get where this young lady is coming from.
Wholeheartedly I couldn't agree more, but suppose this was possible, what then? Pets won't be allowed either? Or better yet handymen and landscapers who put on music to work not allowed? Like, say at the middle of the area there were strict child-free. The folks behind us have a pool. Their kids are fairly noisy using it but it's after the kids go to bed that the REAL noise starts! The parents turn up the loud music and use foul language while drinking with their friends. I don't know how their kids sleep through it because I can't.
I'd sign up for this like a shot. My new downstairs neighbours have five kids of various ages, with the youngest two being at the Running Around Stupid Screaming Like A Banshee stage. I'm all for kids being kids, but there's a time and a place for it - and it's not at 10pm on a weeknight when I'm in bed trying to sleep because I've got work in the morning and have to be up at 6am.
I'm a mom a d FULLY respect those that are childfree/don't like kids (people who don't like them should absolutely NOT have them and that's FINE) I just don't know how you find a developer willing to DO that. There's also the option of trying to find a place where pools are by age, or have adult only time.

I don't blame children or animals for being loud and obnoxious; it's absolutely the parents. The real problem is that there's no system in place to ensure that people raise their kids well and what rules exist about people conducting themselves safely and considerately are largely unenforced, especially now. Daily, I see that people generally do as they please, uncaring of the effect it has on others. So, of course children and pets are allowed to behave badly.
Here is the issue for those who think this could actually happen. You buy a house in a kid free zone, and surprise 2 years later you are pregnant. Now what do you do, sell the house? What if the housing market is down and you can't even sell it for enough to pay off the mortgage. What happens if you say screw it I'm staying and having my kid here, do you get harassed and fined by a-hole hoa's, are there criminal zoning violations? What and how do you think this could ever work. The senior living works cause nobody is getting pregnant at 55+, but younger just won't work. The best you could do is rent an adult only apartment where if pregnant you just move and get evicted if you don't by the time of the birth. Even then evicting new mothers is a difficult prospect.
I wouldn't be opposed to more child-free places, but I also want more rude adult-free places. I'm thinking it's just easier to move out into the middle of no where.

Kids shouldn’t be allowed to live in apartments unless it’s the first or second floor too. There were some gross kids playing in the grocery store last time I went and nobody stopped them. Then what's your solution? You live in a society with children, like it or not. Kids need a roof over their heads whether or not you want to live near them.
