But unfortunately, sometimes these goodbyes happen because of one person's bad choices. And no, we don't mean they shouldn't have gotten in the car that morning; we mean actively refusing medical treatment for something like the flu.
And unfortunately, these types of situations are more common than we might think. So, people headed over to r/AskReddit to share stories about how some of their friends and family perished in the most bizarre and avoidable ways ever.

I have the same allergy, the idea of eating unknown food is absolutely wild. Flat out stupid.
One of the most common replies was not believing in medicine. Granted, medical reticence has always existed, but in recent years, that has even increased. Financial strain and misinformation are actually among the top reasons why people have decided to stop trusting healthcare professionals.
Unfortunately, this also means that instead of seeking immediate help for a problem that could be treated, they may turn to alternative medicine as a replacement rather than using it as a complement. And when these alternatives are unproven, they can often postpone critical screenings and even diagnoses, potentially leading to an early demise.

A beloved friend of mine in college, who I adore, got hit by a bus. She was walking down a relatively busy road and was at an intersection waiting to cross. She saw a motorcyclist get in a minor accident across the street, and without thinking walked into traffic to make sure they were okay. She had the biggest heart and was always willing to drop everything to help others, and just didn't think to look for traffic.
It was a stupid way to d*e for sure. But she was one of the best people I've known and taken too soon.

There was a "game" people played in a nearby small town. Drive down the town dock as fast as you can, slam on the brakes and see how close to the end you can stop. If you mistime it, you fall in the ocean and you'd be gone.

Good friend of mine was found to have breast cancer, she was an athlete,ate healthy and sadly didnt believe in modern medicine. She opened a gofundme page and got a good amount of money for her treatment (She was well liked).
What she did next? She went to Mexico to find "natural cures" for her advance cancer.
Then, of course, we have the kind of choices that come with being young. TikTok challenges, car stunts, and the constant, almost irrational belief that life will never end when you're young. Which, granted, most would agree is how it should feel, but by actively putting ourselves in danger without realizing there can be consequences to our actions, that's how we end up in an early grave.
Challenges like the Blackout Challenge, the Benadryl Challenge, and the Fireball Challenge are just a few examples of ways some young people have lost their lives. And frankly, it isn't all that surprising, considering the prefrontal cortex, the brain region responsible for risk evaluation and impulse control, isn't fully developed until around ages 25 to 30.

A relative absolutely refused to seek medical attention for a wound. It never healed due to diabetes that he refused to get treated for. Ended up with sepsis that ultimately couldn’t be treated. He was basically gone from stubbornness.

Decades ago when I was in second grade, one of my best friends was a member of the Christian Scientists. The flu was going around pretty bad that winter, and she caught it. She developed complications and was gone because her family didn't believe in medical treatment.
I was heartbroken and confused; my dad was furious.

Stayed many years ago in Crete, out of season but a touristy resort.
During the summer the amount of accidents they had from idiots jumping from high apartment balconies into the pools was ridiculous
Drunkenness or substance-related mistakes also top the list of responses, which isn't at all surprising. There are a ton of neurological changes that occur when you consume alcohol. Normally, it depresses the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for self-control and weighing long-term consequences, leading someone to focus more on immediate social gratification.
By the time alcohol is severely concentrated in the body to the point where blackouts occur, cognitive function is already incredibly impaired. At that point, some people may believe that things like driving under the influence or exposing themselves to danger are perfectly acceptable, or even fun, activities.

Ex-husband fell into a pit of snakes. I don't know if he was working construction or if he was homeless because he had a substance problem the last I knew. But he was bitten multiple times and was gone. We had been divorced for quite some time and I only found out about it incidentally. .

High school friend drove his car into a utility pole. Survived with no injury, but exited the car to move the high-voltage cables off the car by hand ... and that was that.

I knew a few.
1) riding down the highway standing in the back of a ute (pickup for those who don't speak Aussie)
Car rolled going round a corner, flung him then rolled over him. Squished like a bug.
2) riding on the roof of an electric train. Touched the pantograph (power cable contact arm), did a little dance then stopped dancing.

She got bit by her own horse and didn't seek medical care. Got sepsis.
I never met this person, but my friend's mom really believed that the oils her chiropractor shilled would cure her cancer. She left behind like 5 kids, most of whom were still minors. That one makes me sad and angry.

I had a friend that worked on a big college campus building that was 12 stories tall. They accidentally gave him the master key that unlocked every door and obviously he was happy about this and didn’t say anything. He would take dates on the roof and sit on the edge of the rooftop looking out on the city. Well anyhow he drank a lot and fell. The full details were never released but his date was passed out drunk on the rooftop when someone found his body on the sidewalk in the morning.

My grandpa broke his hip and refused to do PT or get out of bed or take care of himself at all. The doctor said if he didn't, he'd get pneumonia and d*e. Reader, he got pneumonia and died.

A family member of a friend. They were a disgustingly rich family. The kind that can drop 20,000 on a pair of earrings like you or I would buy a candy bar.
Their son often crashed cars doing idiot stunts a 16 year old with a car would do and they'd just buy him a new one. Turns out money doesn't make you invincible and he ended up crashing and not walking away from one. The family lost contact after that since the father went berserk/crazy and became a shut in hermit and the wife left. This was many many years ago that I'm hearing 3rd hand so details probably aren't accurate.
To the surprise of many, non-vehicular accidents actually happen every single day, to the point where they're one of the reasons so many people lose their lives. The reasons are ground-level falls, accidental poisonings, and even mechanical asphyxiation.
Slipping and hitting your head, leading to traumatic brain problems, is one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries, and it is particularly common among adults aged 65 or older. Choking on food is also an incredibly common way to have your life cut short, as is drowning. So keep in mind to chew your food thoroughly.

Was sick for a few weeks. Came into the office and looked yellow. Said he couldn’t keep food down. Finally convinced him to go to the doctor. Stage 4 colon cancer that spread through out his body. Prior to that he mocked me for getting a colonoscopy basically calling me a p***y. After he was diagnosed he told every male in the office to get checked. He regretted letting his antiquated thinking cost him his life. Wasn’t even 60.

Getting their mouth "cleaned out" with soap. Allergic reaction and d***h. So fkn stupid.... He was only 7. .
Ultimately, we never know what life will bring us. It is unpredictable, dangerous, and volatile. But that unpredictability can be just as beautiful, bringing unexpectedly happy moments, incredible people we meet along the way, and new opportunities and chances every single day. Living on this earth is a walking contradiction and a mixed blessing.
So remember that whenever the sun rises, you should enjoy every second of every day as if it were your last. To put it plainly, John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans,” so make sure to live every day to the fullest.

I had a friend who was straight edge. Never touched alcohol or tobacco in his life. In his early 20s, he had massive anxiety issues and anger issues. Couldn’t get past his hatred of just about anybody. For the dumbest reasons. One time we were at a Chinese restaurant and he said “white people who use chopsticks are just showing off like a******s.“ I mentioned that a lot of of us grew up in areas with lots of Asian friends and restaurants, and it was not that hard to learn to use chopsticks.
Anyway, in his later 20s, a friend of ours who went to burning man every year somehow convinced him to go. I thought there was no way he was gonna make it through that week because it was a d**g fueled party in the desert and this guy was, not to be insulting, very much a five star hotel type of dude. He went out to the desert and came back completely different. No longer angry or stressed out, no longer straight edge. In all he was a much happier person. He wasn’t a hard-core d**g or alcohol user, he would drink once or twice a week, like most people that we knew in our 20s. Just social drinking.
He had gone straight edge initially because his parents were both alcoholics and his grandparents as well. His older brother was a hard-core d**g a****t who had been in and out of rehab a dozen times and was currently homeless and cut off from the family. He was worried that he would have a*******n issues, so he never touched anything. But after a couple years of being able to drink socially without having any a*******n issues he felt OK about it.
At some point, he broke up with his girlfriend of five years plus, and then got in a bad spot mentally, and started drinking by himself to excess. For years, he drank so heavily that he lost his official real job and had to start a freelance job that paid the bills. Lucky for him. It worked out pretty well.
One day, he realized he’d been drunk for three years straight. He couldn’t think of a single day he hadn’t had a drink for over three years. It was something like two bottles a day. It didn’t even matter what it was anymore.
Decided to quit and go cold turkey.
Died of a massive seizure that night. I guess if you’re heavily dependent on alcohol, and you quit cold turkey, this can happen.
It’s not very common I guess, but it happens to some people.
So yeah. I think dying from quitting drinking too fast is one of the dumbest ways I’ve ever heard of somebody dying. The dude just wanted to get better.

The elderly mother of an acquaintance of mine: she’d just undergone pretty major surgery, they didn’t think she was gonna make it but she pulled through. a few weeks post op she went to a fast food joint for dinner, slipped on a chicken nugget on the floor, and cracked her head open. it was a pretty gnarly scene apparently. they rushed her to hospital but she never woke up.
a very sad & very bizarre story. imagine surviving major surgery only to unwittingly be k****d by a chicken nugget.

A guy I went to high school with (age 16) was taking flying lessons. One night he and his friends were drinking and he said he could take a plane out at the airstrip where the flight school was fly around and return it and no one would know.
Most of the group didn't think he was serious. One guy went with him. They got less than a mile from the end of the runway before they crashed.

This freaking absolute d*****s narcissist I knew got a heart attack and survived. Great. But after his life was saved he refused to seek 'western treatment' cuz 'medicines bad' and threw away his money on quackery and weirdos. Developed heart failure. Relatives begged him to get treated and even offered financial help so that he could get a machine for arrhythmia. Refused. Got hospitalized again for heart attack and the same cycle continued. More quackery visits.
But how he died was the stupidest. This d*****s used to use a copper vessel to drink water. One day his stomach was feeling weird so he mixed antacid into his water IN THE FREAKING COPPER VESSEL!! Got copper poisoning and developed serious symptoms. Got to the hospital, went into Cardiac arrest, collapsed in ER and never got back up again. Left two little kids behind.
A****t died of his own stupidity.

My moms friend started out being vegetarian, then she became vegan and in the end she wouldn't eat anything because it was alive at some point somehow. She starved to d***h in a barn attic while meditating.
Now that I'm an adult and have a lot more information I'm pretty sure she was autistic and had ARFID. Poor woman never got any help.

A friend of mine from church’s sister d**d from a stage one cancer that advanced to stage four, and could easily be surgically removed and be done with it. Doctors kept saying it was incredibly easy and she wouldn’t even need any sort of treatment after. They could just cut it right out.
They were the unhinged level of Christian. She instead decided to “trust in the Lord” and for the Lord to do His will. She quite literally just let it grow instead of removing it.
She of course eventually d**d and left behind her husband and child.
Even though it didn’t happen to my friend, and it was her sister, I lost a lot of respect for her and her family. Millions of people who get cancer could only be so lucky to have such an easy case and stumble upon a straight forward stage one cancer, treat it, and move on. To just let it grow and continue disgusted me.

Equally dumb and heartbreaking. My friend’s former neighbor was mowing their very hilly front lawn. The riding mower flipped, rolled down the hill all the way to a ditch near the street that had just a few inches of water in it from a recent rain. The neighbor was trapped upside down, pinned beneath the mower, and drowned with the rest of his family oblivious in the back yard.

He was cutting up the trunk of a large tree that had fallen over, with roots intact.
As the weight of the trunk lessened, the roots started to tip the balance, until they finally flipped the remaining trunk upright...he had been standing on the trunk at the time and was "projected" to his doom.
He was in his late 80's / early 90's and had had enough adventures is his life already, what was one last one?

My brother in law's parents had a gas leak in his house that they knew about and said it was just a little one. His step-dad decided to do a project that involved welding in the garage.
Yeah, their house blew up. His step-dad died instantly and his mom was in the ICU for a pretty long time. She died a few months later; about a week after my brother in law died of an unrelated event (o******e).

Every year the college town I work and live in has at least a handful of students drunkenly fall off a balcony of an apartment complex or the roof of a house and either end up as an organ donor or a memorial in the student paper.

While my brother in law was shooting a .357 magnum on his Dad’s property one round turned out to be a dud. He went back into the house, and while my friend was filming for instagram or some s**t, he loaded another round into the revolver after removing the spent cartridges, but not the dud. He then spun the chamber, pointed the barrel at his head and said “Russian roule” before he shot himself. He didn’t even get the word roulette out. The worst part was I saw the video. Always practice proper safety for any weapon.

A girl in my middle school somehow died from trying to run under the garage door. I never forgot that and never tried again.

An in-law of mine employed a person who refused to use safety equipment when working on the roof of buildings. The person was a contractor for them and they were a few years out from retiring and allowed them to continue working like that.
One day, they lost their footing and fell.
There was reason to believe that they had an aneurism while up on the roof which was the cause of the fall but because they also had head trauma from the fall, there was no way to determine that for sure. Had they fallen with the safety equipment, they may not have lived after the suspected aneurism but there is no way to know for sure.
My in-law was in a legal fight with the person's surviving relatives for years.

I didn't know them personally, but a relative of mine died unloading things from a parked pickup truck. Was standing on the bed, lost his balance and fell onto the ground. Hit the back of his head and died on impact. Not a particularly old guy either. I believe he was 40 - ish. No major health issues. Wasn't being reckless. Just doing a favor for someone he was helping move.

Lied to doctor about age, did not undergo routine cardio testing for her age because the doctor thought she was 15 years younger, died without warning of a heart attack and turns out she’d had heart disease .

Acquaintance had an infected tooth but couldn’t afford to get it taken care of. She pulled the tooth herself and died because the infection went straight to her brain.

Not really “stupid” but ironic. One of my friend’s grandfather was 96 years old and he died because he was out jogging on Sunday morning and got hit by a drunk driver.

Basically, not cutting his toe nails.
He had some sort of fungus on his toe for years. His big toes specifically. I don’t know the specifics of the fungus or how it infected the rest of his foot for a prolonged period. Even after the foot/toes were treated, the infection damaged his heart quite a bit.
Didn’t stay in the hospital for the open heart surgery the doctor was begging him to get. The hospital called us frantically moments after he left trying to get him to go back. He also had blood clots in his lungs. He didn’t go back to the hospital, but a few days later went to his doctor who gave him blood thinners, and even a life vest that was supposed to save him during a cardiac episode.
He comes home, feels fine for a few weeks. Better than how he felt for nearly a year even, more energy, didn’t need his cane or walker, it was amazing to see..I didn’t know that energy and adrenaline was actually his body’s last push to live.
Anyway..he died in his sleep. Sat with him for four hours before the funeral home came. Super traumatic.
Just stupid. Stupid choices all around. All over not cutting his big toenails. I miss him terribly.

High school classmate had a friend. Friend's father had a sports car. Friend convinced classmate to go on joyride with him in Dad's sports car. Dad did not want anyone but dad driving sports car, as it was a classic. Dad was not home.
The dumb dying part: classmate's friend had his right foot in a g*****n cast, yes ***his right foot***, missed braking on a turn, and drove into a tree. Classmate died. Friend survived.

My great-grandmother came home from cataract surgery and now that she could see, she was horrified by how dirty her house had become.
So she started scrubbing the hell out of the bathtub and she had a massive stroke and died. Face right in the Comet.

Condescending old fart who always thought he knew more than everyone else about everything. His knowledge and experience in one area of science made him smarter than any doctor, engineer, lawyer, etc. Got scratched by his cat, refused to seek medical attention when it got infected, and ended up in ICU dying slowly and miserably from sepsis and organ failure.

This is gross but hopefully will raise awareness to… some people. My grandma never washed her hands after the bathroom. She also used this one rag to clean everything: the bathroom, kitchen, living room, etc. She thought washing the rag with soap was enough, and that she was “cleaning her hands” whilst washing the rag. For years we begged her to wash her hands and throw that rag away, but she wouldn’t listen.
One day she fell over and we took her to the hospital. During assessment, they found a super rare bacteria in her system that they had no idea how to eradicate. This bacteria essentially perforated a hole in her stomach. They told us she’s too old to operate on and antibiotics weren’t helping.
Lying in the hospital bed, hopeless, she finally realised she did this to herself. We loved her so much and were devastated that this could have been avoided. She died after a month.
Moral of the story is, and basically common sense, wash your d**n hands after you use the bathroom.

He got a streetbike.
I could've stopped there, but I'll tell the story. He became a******d to riding the bike, and despite being told by everyone around him that the road conditions should outweigh your desire to ride, he rode the day after it rained. He rode it to work. Me, and two other coworkers commented about how that's not a great idea because it rained last night, which means there's going to be sand on the road from the runoff, and bikes can lose traction. We don't even ride, and he went through classes for his M license, which I guarantee mentioned something about losing traction in bad conditions. We told him to be careful, but he waved us off saying it'll be fine.
It wasn't fine. On his way home, he lost traction on a corner, sending him into the woods, where he hit a tree that broke his back, paralyzing him, and he suffocated in the dirt.

An acquaintance of my dad was elderly and had mobility issues. He had to use a cane to walk. One night, he was walking home from the local dive (yes drunk, but that's not really the cause of his d***h) to his house a couple blocks away.
He had to walk over a railroad crossing (standard suburb street crossing with gates and signals), and while crossing one of his feet slipped into the gap on the street between the rail and asphalt and got stuck. It was late and no one was around, and he couldn't get his foot unstuck. A train ended up coming through minutes later.
I can't imagine his panic when hearing that train horn, and then the crossing signals going off, and not being able to free his foot.
Just a w*f bad luck type of situation.
I frequent an area where I have to walk over a similar crossing to get to the bar next door, and I won't step on/around the rails. I do the awkward hop over them, because I got small feet and am now forever paranoid that will happen to me.

I know a girl who walked on train tracks and didn’t hear the train coming. The train driver ( or sure what they are called) rang the horn multiple times and she didn’t look back or check.

A teenager let his 7 year old brother ride in an inflatable boat in the back of the truck. The wind flipped the boat out of the back and the kid went with it.
Someone hit a deer that was attempting to jump over the car. The front legs went through the windshield and the deer kicked them to d***h.

My friend/coworkers little brother was at a high school house party 2 years ago &his brother tripped over a bicycle that was laying in the grass & when he fell, the kickstand went straight through his eye and punctured his brain. He fought pretty hard for a couple of months, but sadly died at age 17 from his injury.

My friend thought Covid was a hoax.
She was in her 50s, had previous medical conditions, refused to mask, and refused to get vaccinated despite me and other people in my life being high risk. She got covid or the "hoax virus" then died.

A girl from my school, she was 13 years old. She arrived at school and the cleaning crew always placed the chairs on top of the tables to clean under, one chair fell on her, knocked her down, bronchoaspirated, d**d in minutes. Teacher didn't knew first aid. School wasn't sued to oblivion because it was the 90s and the parents were too devasted to do anything. Rest in peace Brenda.

Didn't know the person but I witnessed it. Guy drove his car onto a road that had flooded and got stuck. Firefighters were coming to get him out but he either got spooked or was overconfident and he jumped into the raging river. They found him five months later hundreds of miles downstream.

I heard a guy at work coughing, it sounded pretty bad, he couldn't say two words without coughing.
I told him he had a pretty serious case of pneumonia and he needed hospitalization immediately, he waved me off.
His boss heard me say that and cornered him in the parking lot, then called his wife.
Wife took him to the hospital, he didn't make it through the night.
If you don't want to go to the doctor, take good care of yourself. .

A kid in my hometown tried to impress his friends by grinding the rail of a huge stairwell in a parking garage. Poor kid fell 5 stories and left a mess on the pavement.

Former colleague was working on a ladder at home, fell and went by ambulance to the hospital. When he woke up in the hospital he left AMA. Died the next day at home. Really sad.

I worked in a morgue for a while. So did see some interesting things. The stupidist was a man who decided for whatever reason to stick his d**k in a glass milk bottle.
Well his d**k must have gotten stuck. His utterly moronic solution was to break the milk bottle with a hammer. Long story short, cut his d**k to shreds and bled out in short order.
Lond story short, the cylinder wasn't unharmed.

Two girls at my school stopped the safety bar on a roller coaster from locking in place so that they could get more of a "lift" sensation. Thought they could just hold onto the bar. One girl did, the other let go and fell to her d***h.

Tied a bed mattress to the back of her Cherokee and hung on for dear life as the her friend drove through the mud pits. Cherokee went up an embankment and toppled backwards onto the mattress. She died pretty much instantly. .

My friend of 35 years drank himself to d***h. The reason I'd say it's dumb is because he had his wife and children desperately trying to get him to stop, his employer sent him to rehab multiple times over two years and still kept him on their payroll and footed the bill for treatment, and he had a dozen friends trying to talk sense into him. He treated all of it like some dumb teenage "you can't tell me what to do" phase. The man was 50 and drinking cheap vodka straight from the bottle all day long.
His wife took their children and left. His employer gave him an ultimatum to stop coming to work drunk and he said "f**k you", and almost all his friends gave up and stopped associating with him because he was belligerent and obnoxious when he was drunk, which was all the time. I miss him but it was avoidable and dumb. I just don't understand it. .

Went to slide down a staircase handrail on his b*m, fell off the handrail onto the concrete. Young lawyer who had been recruited by a top law firm overseas, really thought he was going to be one of the most successful people I knew.

This happened almost 30 years ago. I worked in an emergency room in a small town. It was the opening day of deer season and two guys in their early 20s came in frantic. One had a bloody towel over his head. Turned out that another hunter had accidentally shot him in the back of his head. His entire scalp was covered in buck shot, but nothing penetrated his skull. He was absolutely lucky.
There was a big article in the paper the next day about how they realized they had been living their lives wrong and they were going to stop drinking and they were going to go back to church. It was a big wake up, call for them. The next night I was also working when a horrible accident was called in. One was DOA and the other had been partially ejected through the sunroof and basically bent in half when the car flipped. It was the same two guys. They had gone out celebrating their near d***h experience and got plastered. The one who made it to the emergency room coded while having a CT scan. Horribly sad and so unnecessary.

My mom's twin slipped on a steetcar step in winter and smacked her head hard enough.

My grandmother got drunk, knocked a pillow off her couch, passed out, and suffocated when she rolled off the couch and face-first into the pillow.
Let's just say it was the d***h she deserved.
One of my great-uncles died when he was electrocuted on the job. Not dumb on its own, but that man served in World War II and came back unharmed. To do that and then d*e of electrocution? I've always thought that was tragically dumb.

I know of 2.
One relative was a functional drunk. No one who remembers him remembers him not being completely wasted ever. He sits down outside in the winter while at work in a deserted corner so coworkers don’t catch him drinking. He freezes to d***h and is found hours later at shift end.
Second person (same side of the family) smokes in bed. They d*e in a fire caused my smoking in bed.
