Sister’s Family Tries Shaming Man For Not Paying $190 For Their Son’s Steak, Despite The Man Warning The Boy Not To Order It
InterviewA deal is a deal, whether it’s a serious agreement or a silly game. However, some people agree to things only to pout when they have to hold up their end of the bargain.
The redditor u/International_Set522 made a deal with his brother-in-law after taking the family out for dinner. Their agreement was based on whether or not his nephew—the BIL’s son—could finish his meal. The amount of food that was left resulted in the brother-in-law having to put his money where his mouth was and the redditor turning to the AITA community.
Bored Panda has reached out to the OP and he was kind enough to answer a few of our questions. You will find his thoughts in the text below.

Even though the OP’s brother-in-law didn’t seem happy about the situation, he kept his word
The OP wanted to treat his family to a nice dinner, but he didn’t think his nephew could finish a three-pound steak, which is why he suggested opting for a smaller option. He admitted to Bored Panda that he was somewhat annoyed that his sister didn’t tell her son to pick a reasonable meal. “It wasn’t the price I cared about, it was the portion size. I took them to a nice restaurant, not an eating contest,” he said. However, his brother-in-law thought the OP simply didn’t want to pay for the pricey meal, which eventually led to the BIL paying for it himself, adhering to a deal they made.
Research shows that the majority of people tend to keep their word. It pointed out that promises encourage people to get into voluntary commitments about future behavior, which enables human cooperation. Promises have a strong binding effect on people’s behavior as they are expected to act a certain way, which leads to them typically keeping their word. However, according to the research, they don’t expect others to do it to the same extent.
Even though the OP’s brother-in-law didn’t seem to be too happy about the situation, he kept his word and paid for his son’s meal. Whether or not people like the promises they made, keeping them can have a positive effect on them.

The OP refuses to pay for food that goes to waste, and unfortunately, tons of it does every year
Before ordering, the OP wasn’t sure if the family would take the leftovers home or the meal would end up being wasted. According to the Food And Agriculture Organization Of The United Nations, roughly one-third of food that is produced for human consumption is lost or wasted globally, adding up to around 1.3 billion tons per year. The World Counts revealed that up to this point in 2023, over 560 million tons of food has already been wasted globally this year.
“My sister and I grew up poor. We never wasted food,” the OP told Bored Panda. “And we learned how to stretch a dollar for our food budget. The thing is I don’t think they were trying for leftovers. I have no problem taking her and filling her fridge and pantry when I visit. I just think if you order a meal at a nice restaurant you should savor it and walk away satisfied but not waddling. Once again, this was a very nice restaurant. If I had taken them to Golden Corral or something where it was all you can eat, I would expect them to gorge but not put food on their plate that they weren’t going to eat.
Even though food waste is a problem of grand proportions, there are small steps each person can take to try and scale it down. The European Food Information Council (EUFIC) pointed out that people can start by reducing food waste at home by planning their meals and properly storing their food, for instance. Moreover, familiarizing yourself with the differences between the ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates as well as ways to repurpose waste when possible can also help reach the goal.
Among other things, EUFIC suggested that avoiding serving too much can help minimize food waste as well. The OP was sure his nephew wouldn’t be able to finish the whole meal, which is why he proposed a deal to his father who believed otherwise (since, as the redditor later pointed out, he refuses to pay for food that goes to waste). Their agreement ended in the brother-in-law having to pay for the steak and the OP asking the AITA community if he was a jerk for making him do so.

The majority of redditors didn’t consider the OP a jerk, even though a few thought otherwise

Share on FacebookI think the YTA people have a good point. If I’m invited out for dinner - and somebody else is paying - I’ll commonly order one of every item on the menu. And take whatever I don’t eat home to eat later. If I’m invited round for dinner, il lest what they give me, then go through their cupboards to see what else I can eat. Sometimes I’ll pour a couple of bowls of milk and cereal, with no intention of eating them, or pour their best liquor down the toilet. No, wait, I don’t do any of those fingers. And the OP is 100% NTA.
I don't understand those YTA people here, being treated for a meal doesn't mean you can outright abuse the offer and eat as expensive as possible. OP was generous for even offering to pay for this even though it's extremely expensive and obvious that one child can't eat it, and he clearly stated beforehand that BL would have to pay for it if the kid can't eat it.
The YTA are the AH that when treated to something get the most expensive meal possible just because it’s on someone elses dime, sinple
Load More Replies...My parents would NEVER have allowed me to order a 190$ dish, especially not when someone else is treating. BIL is TA for allowing this, and for all that came afterwards.
Exactly! How come the parents didn’t speak up and teach their some some manners about not being ridiculous and abusing someone’s hospitality. That was embarrassing. I think the BIL must have jealousy issues and just wanted to try to stick it to the host in some perverse way.
Load More Replies...Seriously, who orders the most expensive item (I presume) on the menu when someone is treating you? Even if the kid is too young to understand etiquette, his father should have clued him in and told him to order something else. I really dislike people taking advantage of someone who’s being generous.
$190??? Insane. The op was just being used at this point. That whole family could have eaten from that meal. Hell the whole table! My kids would not have DARED to order that. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. The dad is the AH.
Growing up we were taught to have a couple of options in mind and see what the host orders then order something around that price point.
Load More Replies...The kids Dad should have made the call not to allow him to get such a large meal. My guess is he knew the kid wouldn't finish it all, he didn't expect he'd have to stick to his word and pay and he knew he'd get to take the rest of the food home. Also, you need to be shameless to let your brother/BIL spend so much on a meal. It's so tacky.
Yes and Mom was there too, she did nothing to stop it either. She didn't see any issue with sticking her brother with that bill. I'd be wary about treating her or her family to anything again.

Sorry for long post but I have to finish the story... Kid throws up entire meal and I get a bus pan from the waitress (I REFUSE to make her clean it up!) and use the linen napkin to clean up the table while they all just sit there watching me in revenge of my friends stupid! We get out to the parking lot, wave goodbye and get in our cars to leave. No apologies. No offer to pay for wasted meal. The mess. MY clean up. NOTHING! Haven't seen or heard from her since!!!
Similar story... I hadn't seen this friend for a long while and she was coming through town with her family including her new husband whom I hadn't met. They also had her two preteen kids with them and we met at a steak and seafood place. My invite my treat. Eleven yr old son orders a huge seafood platter and several sides with names he was not familiar with ae. Potatoes au gratin, stuffed mushrooms and asparagus. Also downs 4 nonalcoholic frozen strawberry margaritas . And finishes it off with a huge hot fudge sundae with all the trimmings! I am amazed how this skinny little kid put it away!!! And my "friend " didn't discourage ANY of his choices... I pay the check (I didn't look at the receipt...just told the waitress to add her 20%, )signed and prepared to leave. We all stand up and said kid proceeds to throw up the entire meal UNTO THE TABLE!!! Friend makes no move to have kid throw up into a napkin or try to get him to the restroom or ANYTHING!!! Wait
"Wait"---- @Judy, I feel like you left us hanging. Was there more to the story? Nevermind, found it. It's a separate comment.
Load More Replies...Awful behaviour from the BIL and nephew. Abusing someone’s hospitality is s****y behaviour and for the BIL to collude in it is worse. It’s similar to going out in a large group of varying financial means and “going Dutch” . Most people will read the room, realise that certain people will be financially stretched and order something mid-range so no one’s embarrassed when the bill turns up. I’ve been on a few of such meals and there’s always one prick who orders the most expensive food & drink and sees the arrangement as an opportunity to be subsidised by everyone else. Of course, this is fine if they offer to pay a supplement for their expensive tastes but, in the case of my BIL, he didn’t. It was funny watching my wife insist that he pay extra for his greediness.
