Not quite sure I agree with the "correct" answer for off the hook... I mean yes, but I feel like we were saying it to mean awesome. "This place is off the hook/chain" Using it the way they did worked too, but I don't think out of trouble when I hear off the hook...
As a non-native english speaker, I've never heard of the phrase "off the hook" to mean awesome. For me it was always out of trouble.
