From what I can gather he raised the £500,000 in case his daughter needed to pay for treatment abroad if she relapsed. It seems that there was pioneering treatment only available in the US at that time, hence why he had to raise the money.

I know what it feels like to be considered scary and intimidating just for existing, but not the rest. The last time I got an unsolicited compliment on my looks I was 6 years old. I'm over 40 now. Even on the rare occasions someone was willing to date me, they never found me attractive.
