“Really Heartbreaking”: Cops Flooded With Calls Over Eugenia Cooney’s Alarming Appearance

TW: this story mentions explicit descriptions of eating disorders

One should never comment on another person’s body, but what happens when a person has seemingly spent years fading away for the whole world to see?

This is the dilemma concerned viewers and fans have had to deal with whilst watching YouTuber Eugenia Cooney, who has had an infamous history of sparking outrage due to her shockingly tiny frame.

Only now, it appears that the situation may have escalated to a new level of gravity.

The 29-year-old Massachusetts native initially began live streaming on the broadcasting service YouNow before creating a YouTube channel in 2011, which has since gone on to earn 2.1 million subscribers.

Eugenia is known for her emo and gothic looks but has especially risen to infamy in the past few years by exhibiting clothing hauls where her emaciated figure is purposely shown.

The content creator has been presumably suffering from anorexia nervosa, although this diagnosis has never been officially confirmed by Eugenia herself.

As a result of her revealing videos, people have long contended that her material has been promoting dangerous eating disorders in the audience, prompting worries about her impact on her adolescent supporters.

Eugenia’s viewers have been forming many theories about her health, mental state, and even home life with some suggesting that her mother, Deb, has been behind her deteriorating physical state, alleging she has kept Eugenia locked in their house, feeding her just enough to keep her alive.

In 2016, Eugenia’s viewers went as far as to create a Change.org petition titled “Temporarily Ban Eugenia Cooney off of YouTube” which received 18,000 signatures, but was later removed for “violating community guidelines”.

At the beginning of 2019, the controversial figure’s online presence dwindled, causing anxiety among her followers who believed she might have passed away.

Nevertheless, in February, Eugenia took to her Twitter account (now known as X) to inform her fans: “I appreciate the concern.

“I’m taking a break from social media and voluntarily working on this with my doctor privately. Please respect that.”

Eugenia reportedly went on to undergo medical evaluation and, at the request of a friend, she was put under a 5150 hold before embarking on a month-long rehabilitation program.

5150 is the number of the section of the American Welfare and Institutions Code, which allows an adult who is experiencing a mental health crisis to be involuntarily detained for a 72-hour psychiatric hospitalization when evaluated to be a danger to others, or to himself or herself, or gravely disabled.

The YouTuber returned later that year, in fellow content creator Shane Dawson’s hour-long YouTube video titled “Eugenia Cooney: The Comeback,” where she openly acknowledged the decade-long speculation about her eating disorder and the journey toward recovery for the first time.

After Shane’s documentary was released, Eugenia soon resumed her usual video uploads but appeared to slowly display signs of a relapse.

A new petition was subsequently created in 2021 on Change.org to age-restrict, or entirely remove, Eugenia’s YouTube channel.

The petition received 53,117 signatures and read: “In February 2019, Eugenia was assessed by medical professionals in regards to her low body weight and put on an involuntary treatment order or a 5150 – a 72-hour psychiatric hold – for assessment of her mental and physical health.”

It went on to mention The Return of Eugenia Cooney, and how Eugenia failed to divulge which eating disorder she suffers from, and how there has been a “steady decline in Eugenia’s physical appearance” since the documentary’s release.

“Eugenia has stated that she weighs 38.8kg/84lbs at a height of 170cm tall or 5’7,” the petition read, before explaining that her light weight meant a dangerously low body mass index.

Eugenia’s viewers have created petitions to try to remove her social media platforms

It also explained that “Eugenia is a prominent Twitch streamer with 100,000 followers,” and that “from an outside perspective it seems that Eugenia spends anywhere between 4-6 hours per day live streaming to this audience.”

It continued: “During these live streams she does not eat, she does not drink and she vehemently denies any form of problem.

“When Eugenia is confronted about her eating disorder she refers to the people doing so as ‘haters’.”

The petition went on to demand the removal of Eugenia’s public platforms, specifically YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and Instagram, “until Eugenia is willing to confront her eating disorder head-on, it is irresponsible and selfish to continue uploading and streaming to an audience of over 2 million viewers, most of whom are young and impressionable.

Several influencers online have spoken out about Eugenia and her questionable content, including TikTok dietician Abbey Sharp, who posted last month a video on TikTok telling her 723.8 thousand followers that people had “let this girl down”.

Eugenia was reportedly sent by force to a rehabilitation center for eating disorders

Abbey was referring to a video Eugenia had posted on her TikTok in August, where she was cosplaying the late Mexican singer Selena and was viewed 78 million times.

The dietician, who is known for commenting on celebrities’ nutritional regiments whilst giving professional tips, said that the online community has let Eugenia down by liking the video over two million times.

“This is not good for vulnerable viewers and it’s definitely not good for her,” Abbey said.

Abbey went on to relate to Eugenia’s content, as she had herself survived an eating disorder, and could therefore understand how viewers liking such videos only fueled Eugenia’s assumed health condition.

The dietician asked her viewers to report Eugenia’s videos in order to help her get better.

She was the subject of Shane Dawson’s documentary ‘Eugenia Cooney: The Comeback’

Things have now turned for the worse as local Greenwich Police Sergeant Brent Reeves recently told TMZ that calls and emails have been coming into his department about Eugenia from all over the world — even getting people calling from as far away as Egypt and New Zealand.

Brent said: “We’re told the callers are looking to make sure she’s doing okay and isn’t being forced by her mom to make content and keep up her appearance.”

The sergeant has known Eugenia for over a decade, and their relationship is reportedly strong as they even share a unique code, where the YouTuber would include a specific item in her videos to signal that everything is well.

If that object isn’t there, however, he’ll know to get her help, TMZ reported.

The police officer has reportedly mentioned that Eugenia has consistently maintained a slim physique, and they therefore “can’t force her to eat more if she’s content with her current size”.

A petition mentioned that Eugenia displayed a “steady decline in her physical appearance” ever since she came back from her rehab

He also emphasized that she is mentally sound and maintains a cheerful disposition during their conversations.

Other agencies have checked on her in the past, but the publication was told she has never met the criteria to force her to get any kind of help.

According to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD), eating disorders affect at least 9% of the population worldwide.

Moreover, less than 6% of people with eating disorders are medically diagnosed as “underweight” and eating disorders are among the deadliest mental illnesses, second only to opioid overdose.

10,200 deaths each year are the direct result of an eating disorder—that’s one death every 52 minutes.

TikTok dietician Abbey Sharp said the internet community had “failed Eugenia”

Mayo Clinic describes anorexia nervosa as an eating disorder characterized by abnormally low body weight, an intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted perception of weight.

People with anorexia place a high value on controlling their weight and shape, using extreme efforts that tend to significantly interfere with their lives.

The physical signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa are related to starvation, whilst it includes emotional and behavioral issues involving an unrealistic perception of body weight and an extremely strong fear of gaining weight or becoming fat.

As a result of starvation, people who suffer from anorexia may also experience abnormal blood counts, fainting, bluish discoloration of the fingers, loss of hair, and eroded teeth.

Eugenia’s followers have consistently expressed worries about her presumed declining health

This is extremely dangerous and worse than being obese, in my opinion. Without body fat to cushion and protect her organs, what might be a minor injury for others could be a critical injury for her. This is absolutely not healthy in the slightest and this kind of behavior should be reprimanded and discouraged, not celebrated. And for those who find themselves in the body positivity movement that might want to argue with me on this, I don’t wanna hear your nonsensical babble. This ain’t healthy - at all. Period.

Yep. I'm obese (300lbs+) and I fell down my stairs. My fat cushioned me and I only had a few bruises. My 110lb girlfriend fell and broke her ankle. I think I need to fix the stairs.

We are literally watching someone starve themselves to death. What if someone uploaded content of them letting themselves bleed to death, little by little , over time,? Or poising themselves? It would be taken seriously as the medical emergency it is, and their would be swift action by the medics, police and social services, and it would not be dismissed because "they seem mentally sound" Starving yourself to death is not mentally sound. What f****d up reasoning that anyone thinks this isn't an emergency and treating it like one? Then there is that f*****g Cop who is a joke. "She has always maintained a slim physique" are you serious? There is a huge difference from a slim physique to skeletal. For absolute f***s sake this woman needs help NOW and her content needs to be removed. As long as she is getting that fix of acceptance from all the likes on her videos, and there is $ being made (though who would want her to endorse their products) she will continue to churn out these videos and not get help.

Sadly, with 2 million YouTube followers, she is likely making a very good living at this and so there is financial incentive. Tragic and I don't see how this won't end in her eventual demise. Twitch and YouTube would do her some good by shutting down her channels or de-monetizing them. I dunno.

Holy f*****g s**t, I have seen WW2 concentration camp victims who looked healthier than her. But this is what the messages women get from a disturbingly early age can so easily wind up doing to us. I was being made to feel "fat" and ugly as early as age SEVEN. That's literally one of my earliest memories. A boy stealing my hat all the time in Kindergarten and my mother telling me "that means he likes you!" is one of the first, and "I'm fat and ugly" is one of the second. Since then I have spent my entire life hating my own body, but I would still much rather have the attitude of "I don't give a damn about whether other people think I'm pretty" than "I will literally kill myself to be thin and pretty". This whole story is incredibly depressing. :(

This can be incredibly triggering to people who have suffered from disordered eating. You censor words like a*s, d**k and twat yet you post photographs like this with no care for your readers. Tiktok is by far the most toxic ap out there. Instagram, snapchat etc are also terrible but Tiktok has them beaten by leaps and bounds.

jesus christ, i'm amazed she's still alive, to be quite honest. this is so incredibly unhealthy, unappealing, and unattractive. i'd say she needs more intervention at this point than just people being concerned for her; maybe tube feedings until her weight is back up a bit and she (hopefully) realizes that she feels a lot better that way. but i've never had an eating disorder, i know they're incredibly potent on the brain chemistry.

The picture with the rainbow socks always hits me, if she was a more ‘normal’ weight she would be one of the most beautiful women period. That’s not saying she isn’t beautiful now but that it’s really sad that she’s presumably chasing a body image that she really doesn’t need to, she’s ill and she needs help might sound harsh but why hasn’t she been put on a psychiatric hold to at least give her a chance?

She comes across my feed from time to time on TikTok and once in a while on YouTube when I'm Doom Scrolling. She goes Live frequently from what I understand, for whatever that's worth to you, and she looks that way in the screen captures that people post. There comes a point of extremity to ANYTHING when a big deal IS made. No one can eat themselves to 400,500,600+ lbs and not have society be just disgusted by it. (Hell, depending on a factor or two like height and gender, and190+ gets society to act like perfect asses about it). And no one can starve themselves into nothingness without people having an absolute fit either.

This is extremly heartbreaking I hate reading comments on her videos because everybody tells her to eat. Get help. Stop starving yourself. It's not easy. She is so far gone, there's no coming back. Sulhe doesn't want help because she thinks she's fine. Her mother is the worst. she knows what her daughters doing and says "she's fine guys, she's just a skinny minnie" all Deb cares about is the money & it probably gets handed right over to the mom Eugenia will only ask for help when she's on her death bed begging not to die yet. . It's a sad reality, but is the truth. I wish her nothing but love, peace and genuine happiness. Deb, told her that she's got a weak heart, so if eugenia leaves her to go to treatment/moves out, it will kill her. What mother puts that kind of burden on their daughter, let alone a very sick child?! I check in on her channel just to make sure she's still with us. Im not gon tell her to get help, or to eat, I will not tell her she looks skinny, that keeps her

This is a medical emergency and she needs to be hospitalized immediately, just the same as if she was suffering a drug overdose or had a car accident. Otherwise she will be dead very soon. It's too late for voluntary therapy. I'm speaking from experience, my daughter had extreme anorexia at age 17, she almost died, she was saved by the hospital treatment including being fed through a tube. The problem is the message her content sends to young viewers along with the blatant psychological trauma of watching someone die on screen. I don't care if it's a slow death. It's death. Youtube is protecting this, and I guarantee if/when she does pass her Mom is going to do a 180 and sue the pants off them for not 'restricting' her daughter's content 'for the sake of her mental health.' Eugenia has had so many fans & viewers try to encourage her to get better. I feel sorry for her but I feel sorrier for the young people who come across her content & get it into their heads that it is normal & okay.

Odd how we find this distressing (which it is), yet we have obese (and no, not slightly overweight, but ver overweight) women being 'body positive' - so much so they protrayed in adverts and used to flog sanitary products and Dove soap. Perhaps we should stop being so sensitive and say it for what it is? Unhealthy and going to kill you.

Period.

Back to rehab and social media ban. Remove your attention and she might get help. Keep it up, and she will be dead soon.

Unless she has the most amazing filter that was ever made in life, ever, she is really that thin. She comes across my feed from time to time on TikTok and once in a while on YouTube when I'm Doom Scrolling. She goes Live frequently from what I understand, for whatever that's worth to you, and she looks that way in the screen captures that people post. I'm old enough that I know just about nothing about whether it's possible to have a filter good enough to do a Live and fool millions of people, but I would assume not.

Horrendous but it saved her life. I fear for this lady Eugenia.
