Baldvin: I Photograph Women With Alopecia To Break Gender Stereotypes

“Baldvin” is a photo series I did with an association in Iceland called Baldvin (which means strength). I took portrait photography shots of seven beautiful women who wanted to raise awareness about their condition, which is Alopecia – an Autoimmune disorder that causes losing hair.
Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune disorder that commonly results in unpredictable hair loss. In most cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. For many people, the hair loss is nothing more than a few patches. Sometimes it can lead to the complete loss of hair on the scalp or in extreme cases hairlessness of the entire body.
Many stereotypes exist about gender, one of them is that women should have long hair. Therefore bald-headed women aren’t always accepted in our society like women with long hair would be. It’s necessary to open up the discussion and work against these gender stereotypes. Hopefully, these powerful images will do their job!

Actually the ones who have lost their eyebrows and chosen to not tattoo or paint an eyebrow are even more strikingly beautiful.
Beautiful women, some of them look really good in bald. Though whoever edited the photos should take it a bit easier on the eyes.

My mom is a cancer survivor. She lost her hair, eyelashes and eyebrows from chemo. Like these women she never stopped being beautiful.

I suffer from this condition also! I am not as brave as these ladies are! I have been wearing wigs fit over 15 years! I still year up ty this day when I look in the mirror! It's something that I don't ever think I'll get pass????????????
