“I Was So Confused And Shocked”: Woman Called Selfish By Bride Because She Lost Some Weight

Your body, your rules, right? Well, that is unless your engaged friend has gone off the rails and plans to control every aspect of her wedding, including how you look.

Reddit user Optimal-Weekend5065 dropped a few dress sizes in the lead-up to her bestie’s big day. However, instead of praise and support, the bride met her with jealousy, harsh accusations, and a shocking ultimatum: either regain what you lost, or else!

Suddenly, the friendship that seemed rock solid started to crumble.

So, when you do and your friend takes it as an insult—then what?

Joining the bridal party can bring a lot of pressure

A lot of the time, the pressure the wedding party feels is financial. A LendingTree survey found that 58% of bridesmaids and 61% of maids of honor felt pushed to spend money on bridal party-related expenses, and many agreed it strained their relationship with the bride (32% of bridesmaids and 42% of maids of honor said that was the case).

Additionally, the survey revealed the bride was usually the main source of these demands (48%), and not other members of the bridal party (32%).

(Interestingly, 37% of respondents also admitted they have declined a wedding invitation because of the cost.)

However, when Mamamia spoke to bridesmaids about the most ridiculous requests they have received, there were quite a few anecdotal examples of them being told how to look.

While a few were asked to cut or dye their hair, one said, “I was instructed to lose a few [pounds] so that I wouldn’t ‘stick out,'” and another added, “The bride kept insinuating some people in the bridal party should lose weight.”

We get it— a lot of time and effort goes into planning a wedding. Couples even spend all of their savings to make their day an unforgettable event for everyone involved. But is it worth destroying your friendships?

My sister -in-law lost quite a bit of weight just before my wedding. This played havoc with bridesmaid dress fitting. But the upside was we got out have our newborn niece at the wedding. :o) (Sorry, this isn't clear, my niece was 4 weeks old at the wedding.)

OP should tell the husband to call off the wedding. The poor guy is going have to walk on eggshells 24/7 with such an insecure wife, she sounds like the type to rip him a new one because he smiled at the waitress.

No, she should not try to ruin the wedding over this. To do so would be evil.

I don’t understand this mania for perfection that so many brides seem to indulge in. They want their wedding party to look 100% alike, as if they came off a conveyer belt. They all have to be the same size and have the same length and color of hair. F**k that noise. That’s someone who desperately wants to put on a show of perfection and make it look like everything in their life and marriage is 100% perfect. That’s not the reality with marriage—-or even with events like a wedding, ffs. The reality is that it’s a gathering of people who mean a lot to the couple getting married, with some of the most important occupying positions with certain responsibilities, like maid of honor and best man, etc. A picture perfect Hollywood production wedding that goes off without a hitch doesn’t mean the marriage is going to last. Most of them don’t, tbh, because of the obsessive focus on the surface look of the relationship to outsiders, and not the real hard work the couple has to do, to get through the ups and downs, the “better or worse” part of their vows, the days when you hate each other but get past it because you actually love each other, and all the other not so perfect stuff that happens and has to be dealt with, to make their marriage work and last. Besides, don’t you think that any hitches and unexpected stuff that could happen at a wedding would make the event memorable? I don’t mean drunken fights breaking out and nasty s**t being said and done. No. Just stuff that can be laughed at in the moment and afterward. The cat hitching a ride on the bride’s wedding gown train while she’s walking down the aisle. The five year old cousin or nibling climbing up to the microphone and making a wedding speech. Just funny stuff that happens when family and friends get together. That would make the wedding so much more memorable than the dull and predictable uniformity and perfection that Bridezillas obsess about.

A radio guy I used to listen to wouldn’t give the advice to _gain_ weight for the day, so for the rest of your life, when people see your wedding pictures, they can be impressed with how much weight you lost. 😂. (To be clear, being thinner ≠ been more beautiful, this is just for the people who have unfortunately been conditioned by society to feel that way)

"Solution to this problem, bride? Lose some weight." /s PSA: For anyone that feels bitter seeing their supposed friend is losing weight (assuming it's for a healthy reason), anything aside from being pleased/and perhaps driven to kick-start your own weight loss journey -- if necessary/wanted -- is the wrong response.

She needs to get together with the woman from another recent post who got sacked as MoH because she put weight on (through pregnancy)! I would want nothing to do with any wedding in which my weight had any relevance to the role I might be playing.

The update makes it clear it's so much more than being "upstaged" but aside from someone dressing in white (or a wedding gown like dress) or maybe some color that completely stands out, it's so weird that so many brides are so insecure about getting upstaged at their own weddings. People are literally there for you! So weird.

I try not to be a grammar cop all the time, but the repeated use drove me crazy. Please, people, learn the difference between "lose" and "loose." If you lose weight your pants will be loose. That said, congrats to the OP for losing both the weight and her crazy friend.

My dyslexic partner wouldn't be able to spot the difference 5 seconds after I've pointed it out - their brain just doesn't work like that. Experts estimate 1 in 10 have a form of dyslexia. Probably best to not let it get to you, with those kinds of odds.
