Whether or not you believe in destiny, sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands. Otherwise, the life you dream of can slip away.

Recently, one woman turned to the internet to release all the pent-up frustration she had been avoiding for years. Her controlling partner—aside from the occasional charming moment—was making her miserable, but she kept telling herself to carry on.

Then she stumbled upon his secret online account, and what she found there made her realize it was time to stop acting like his maid.

Losing the spark is a relatively common thing for people in a committed relationship

One in four (26%) Americans is currently in a “relationship rut,” according to a survey of 2,000 partnered adults.

Key indicators of such a period include fewer romantic gestures or moments (50%), less passionate and more routine bedroom activities (46%), and a lack of conversation (41%).

As a result, some find themselves daydreaming about other people or partners (24%) and notice their partner has been commenting less on their appearance (23%).

With this current rut lasting an average of nearly 10 months, and 55% even admitting it’s been more than a year, 63% are concerned it could also be a warning sign of a breakup.

How to know if it’s time to end a relationship?

It’s much easier to judge a couple from the outside. But when you’ve been with your partner for years and years, breaking up feels like a huge decision. The two of you have created a reality for yourselves, and walking away would require reinventing not just yourself, but also your entire life.

“Doubts are normal in relationships, but persistent doubts might signal deeper incompatibility or that your partner may not be right for you,” says Tasha Seiter, MS, Ph.D., LMFT, who does couples therapy, marriage counseling, and individual and family therapy in Fort Collins, Colorado, and online.

To get a clearer picture, Seiter recommends people ask themselves these questions about their partner:

    1. Do they care about your well-being, and do they show it? You can spot a healthy relationship in small moments—how your partner responds when you’re hurt or vulnerable. Someone who listens, supports your interests, and is emotionally present during tough times helps build trust and lasting happiness.
    2. Do you like and admire this person? Even if someone has great qualities, certain traits can still be deal-breakers. What really matters is genuine fondness and admiration—research shows couples who see each other positively are far more likely to stay happy. You shouldn’t just like your partner on paper; being with them should actually feel good.
    3. Do you feel chosen by this person? Relationships go through rough periods, but what matters most is commitment—the choice to stay, work through issues, and not threaten to leave. This matters even more than compatibility or day-to-day happiness. Just as important is how you feel: relief, dread, or unease can reveal whether your relationship provides real emotional safety or not.

It may have taken her a while, but it seems that our Redditor has her answers.

People were overwhelmingly supportive, congratulating the woman for finding the courage to finally walk away

We used to censor only curse words because they were deemed offensive. Now I hear the “F word used everywhere in public and we censor words “k****d” or “a***e” there are too many words we won’t print in full, and no one seems to care about what “freedom of speech” really means. If we can’t even write the words, how the hell are we going to allow real conversations to occur?

Well we would not want to trigger a nuclear meltdown in some fragile little flower by forcing them to read an everyday word that every five-year-old on the planet has heard already, do we? /s

"Atleast he doesn't" is a slippery slope. You are lowering your standards to meet theirs. I did it for years without realizing it.
