Racist Woman Blocks Black Man From Entering His Own Luxury Apartment, Gets The Lesson Of A Lifetime

After a ‘great’ example of white fragility known as BBQ Becky comes, sadly, Debbie Doorway. The latest discrimination example of a white woman calling the police on people of color for simply going about their daily business has gone viral, and it’s just as ugly as you’d expect.

The woman, who we have chosen not to name, confronted D’Arreion Toles as he tried to enter the building that they share in St. Louis, Missouri. Claiming that she felt ‘uncomfortable’ with D’Arreion entering the building, she proceeded to block him while demanding to know his name and which apartment he lived in.

The incident was captured on video by D’Arreion himself and has since gone viral after he shared it with this message: “To be a black man in America and come home. A woman tries to stop me from coming into my building because she feels insecure, Downtown St. Louis luxury loft, because she doesn’t feel that I belong, never really thought this would happen to me, but it did! Then 30 mins later police knock on my door because she called! I was shocked this is racism in America in 2018!”

Soon after the obvious racial discrimination video went viral the internet tracked down the woman and exposed her identity, leading to her losing her job. D’Arreion, while shocked and upset to be treated in such a way, doesn’t want a witch hunt, however. “Don’t bash the woman, just send her positive waves of energy,” he wrote. “Let’s be great people, this is our world, and this message is to everyone of all ages/ races/ colors/! We only get one life so let’s make the most of it and be great, no time for being rude people!”

Who does she think she is? She's not security. No-one has to answer to her for coming into a building even if they don't live there. His patience is remarkable. Mine would not have been. She must have lied to the police to get them to attend a man politely ignoring her questions and then peacefully entering his own apartment. Disgusting behaviour and yet she seriously cannot see what she did wrong.

I agree that noone has to explain themselves to anyone upon entering a building, but apartment thefts do happen and we all should remain cautios. If someone acts suspicious (of course not the case here - he was clear he lived there, had keys etc) contact authorities. Don't ever take matters in your own hands, because if that person happens to be a burglair, you might end up in a very bad place.

Am I the only one wondering why it is that someone so "terrified" of having a black man in her building felt free to not only follow him around yammering at him, she actually made body contact while trying to block his way to the door? ...///... What does that tell us?

Well, she'll have lied. How can the police justify coming out to the truth 'a polite man came into the building I live in, said he lived there and proved it when I followed him and saw him let himself into his apartment and he even gave me his name'... She seriously lied.

Worst part of the story is that the police actually did come knocking on his door. How? "Police, a black man just entered my appartment building and then he entered his own appartment with a key. And he even didn't answer all my questions even though I'm a white woman." "We'll be right over , Ma'am."

I don't know if I think that is the worst part - she probably lied to get the police to come out. Hard to know without them saying as she's not going to admit it. Her belief that he doesn't have a right to be in that building is the worst thing for me.

I went to visit my parents at their nursing home on a bright sunny Saturday morning. A middle aged white woman came to me while I was waiting in the lobby and asked if I knew the African American teen aged boy over there. Nope. "Well, he's just waiting here." So am I. (also a white middle aged woman0 "I'm uncomfortable. I didn't want to come in." I'm sure he's here to visit someone. "Well, I work downtown, so I know. You have to be careful." You have to get away from me. Take your crazy over there. We are not together. She went to find a staff member, who, at the time was busy directing this kid to where he could do his volunteer hours and made her wait. My sister came in and the woman tried to tell her the same c**p about being "scared to come in because she works downtown." My sister told her to kick rocks. I'm sure the lady spent the next five days bragging about her hyper alert sensibilities.

That's as good as the pizza delivery gal that caught a customer lying to her party guests about the how she thought that "The pizza delivery boy tried to steal $40 from us." Turned out it was a five dollar tip that her adult son said she could keep and that the delivery person was the woman standing at their door, not a man. She said her satisfaction came as the door closed when the accusers father turned to this insane woman and said, in front of all the guest.."It was a woman you dipsh*t!"

She was fired, and rightly so, from The Tribeca-STL which "is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds. We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company." The racist woman bears full responsibility for the consequences of her disgusting actions. No one else, just her.

WTF? She obviously thinks a black man can't be rich and thus can't live there (or visit anyone living there). Even if she is that racist, she could have just left him alone and called the police if she really wants but no, she had to follow him, block his way, try to interrogate him and even after he entered with his own key she called the cops, and probably lied to them to get them to come. Again: WTF? Also: I'm admiring him for keeping his cool, I'm not sure I would be that patient, or so forgiving for that matter.

This reminds me of a story about a white woman who called out a black man in first class on a plane. She thought he was probably just confused and after telling her that he paid for it she asked him if he was in the army and after that she jumped to worse conclusions.. as a white woman i feel ashamed of both of these women..

Those who chose ignorance and divisiveness are emboldened by our current political mess. Her actions and ways are unacceptable and this young man didn't react in a way that would've validated her assumptions. He stayed calm and went about his business. Just remember that not all white people are like this. To most, I hope, of us people are people who all equals. The narrative fed to exploit these people's fears of being outnumbered where their so called friends give them honest opinion journalism is as much to blame, if not more, than the Cheeto emporer himself. Racial predjudice is wrong no matter what color it comes from.

At first I thought that maybe (maybe!) this wasn't racially motivated. People who live in apartments *do* have the responsibility not to let someone follow them in, because the doors inside are not very secure. So you need to make sure the outer door closes all the way and the next person, if they live there, can let themselves in with their own key. By the sounds of it, she legitimately thought that he hadn't let himself in, so that's a cause for concern. He was smart not to tell her which unit he was in, because who knows what she might do with that information. But she didn't raise or voice or insult him (that shouldn't be unusual, but it is) so I'm confused why he didn't just show her his key fob. But he knew the name of the security guard, and she kept insisting she "wanted to know who he was visitting" which showed she didn't really think he could live there as he said. And then after she saw him let himself in, she called the cops. WTF?

I'm in the UK and here flats/apartments are legally required to have fire doors which, in theory, are harder to break in. Plus, communal doors often have trades or services buttons on the intercom that unlocks the door directly to allow deliveries or tradespeople in during day time hours. So we can't trust the communal door to be the most secure point.

I live in a secure building. If me and someone else gets to the door at the same time, neither of us expects the other to quickly close the door behind themselves to ensure the following person has the correct access. I would be livid if the person in front of me went out of their way to close the door in my face to make sure I "lived there". Also this woman had clear intentions behind her actions

If she truly thought that he didn't *belong* in the building, why didn't she contact Security and let them handle it? They would have confirmed that he was a resident, then she could have STFU. I don't see why she lost her job, tho. Did she work in the building? I would have filed charges of harassment. This young man is being way too nice.

Kudos to the man for not engaging her in any way. Admire the patience and resilience. She was already identified and I think she will have a really hard time getting her life together after this. Just one remark though - I know it's not the case here probably, but here we are really suspicious of unfamiliar people entering the apartments hallways. I personally reported someone for getting into the building, but they couldn't prove that the apartment they went for was taken by their friends. I wonder if the case here would escalate like that if the man was white though. Then again - no matter the race, if you see something out of place, contact authorities instead of behaving like she did - it only causes you trouble.

I'm glad that karma and/or "justice was served..." however, knowing how the internet works - I wonder how many death threats she's gotten due to the release of this video? (And before I get bashed...)What she did is inexcusable, but like the nosy BBQ Betty or whatever she got called, she did get horrible death threats - for being an a**hat. It was a hard lesson to learn, but I am also willing to bet, she really didn't learn much. Racism is mostly inherited, children learning what they see and hear constantly from their family/friends. Our only hope is that many can follow the young man's advice - and send out those positive thoughts into the world to make it a better place.

I know. They don't deserve death threats. That's just over-reacting. BTW, watch the video that was posted by the woman who was filming BBQ Becky. She was harassing and stalking her. She made *herself* look like a screaming idiot.

This woman appeared to be actually stalking this man and her behaviour would have been quite frightening to me. What is even more disturbing is that she appeared to think she was justified in acting in such a creepy intrusive manner because his skin colour is different than hers. Her poor little dog looked so very anxious and also underfed and thin. I think I would have called the SPCA about that dog!

As s****y as this was, I don't understand how it was legally possible she lost her job over this behaviour. In most countries political opinions or even harassment are not considered sufficient legal reasons for an employer to fire an employee, unless this behaviour was directed at a customer. Or did she work for the building's owners?

So, now instead of just DWB (driving while black,) there is MIWB - moving in while black, EWB - eating while black, as in the teacher's aid at Smith College taking her lunch in a school break room, SWB - shopping at a deli in NY and brushing against a woman with a backpack, another MIWB in NY, SWWB - a child selling bottled water. 911 was called in all those instances, and there are many more. Heinous.

As a Security Officer, I can educate you to know about the rules that only apply for Canada. Here is The Rights and Freedoms for all Canadian are set out in the 34 sections which form the Charter. I just go through from Sections 7 to Section 9. Life, liberty and security of the Person 7. Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice. Search or Seizure 8. Everyone has the right to be secure against UNREASONABLE search or seizure. Detention or Imprisonment 9. Everyone has the right not to be ARBITRARILY detained or imprisoned This is for my fellow Canadian. It is a dejected thing to see this kind of behaviours and unacceptable. Let us all learn from it, or we are going to be doomed to see it again, but this time in our beautiful country.

Regardless of race it’s best practice to challenge “tail gating” at the main entrance of a shared building. Refusing to enter the door code right at the beginning is what causes the suspicion, not his race.

I worked in an apartment building where all tenants were strictly told not to hold the security door for anybody as doing so defeats the purpose of having a security door in the first place. People has to be buzzed in or use their own key to get in the building. This happened after numerous car break ins in the underground parkade from people who were gaining access by waiting for someone to let them in the building. He did not show his fob or let her close the door so he could let himself in. I don’t see anything racist about this. Giving someone access to a secure area when you are not sure that they have permissible access is not a racist at all. When she realized that he had a key she even tried to introduce herself. Use your head snowflakes, not every incident between two people of different skin colours is race based.

While it was a secure building, everyone in NYC still holds a door open for the person behind them, it's just polite. If she didn't believe he was a tenet she could have made a comment about their being neighbors to suss him out. Once she threatened to call the cops and he kept insisting that he lived there, she should be able to tell he wasn't a robber. Her motives appear suspect and come off as harassing. It's kind of amazing that he was as calm as he was. I doubt I could have managed that.

There are many options as motives for her rude behavior (none giving her the authority to physically block a person from moving): 1. She was honestly suspicious of a person entering the house without a key and went overboard even after noticing she was wrong out of shame or stuborness 2. She's "that person" in the house, prying on other people's business and generally being a sad, obtrusive person without any life of her own. 3. She was drunk or on drugs. 4. She's a neurotic wreck, for whatever reason. 5. She's a shameless racist. Now, why would so many of you jump to the conclusion that she's a full blown racist is beyond me. All you see are shades of skin color of which you deduce that it must've been a racist incident.

I am sad that it took this and for her loosing her job for people to realize that their belief system is not within the grasp of their own reality. The whole point of him sending her good vibes is in the hopes that she changes her view of human beings no matter what they look like or where they are from. I have no idea what it is like to be a black man, and I know that I never will. My hope is that I am aware enough on how I treat people and how I leave anyone I come into contact with. As of today's (10/17/18) news, she is completely unapologetic. She says the building rules are you don't let anyone in. So she should have closed the door, let him use his key or fob, and let it be. Instead, she followed him to his door and despite his having a key, called the police. These people should be fined for false alarms.

May I say something to defend this woman? She has entered her building, which is obviously specially protected. Someone, whether black or white, has joined her to use the open door. She now asks if he also lives here and has a key. The simplest solution would have been: Close the door. He opens with his key. Then he always says: this is my house. I live here and he's probably right about that. Still, I don't think that's right. To make a long story short: why doesn't he just say: look, that's my key. and yes, in the end it's probably idiotic to send the police to an apartment that's obviously inhabited,

Look, there was a much better way of handling this than she did. Instead of "I can't let you in for security reasons because I don't know if you're a thief." Or "I'm scared and I want proof you live here." She could have said "You need to use your keycard/code so they know who is in the building and who isn't so in case they have to emergency evacuate the building for say a fire, they can make sure everyone gets out safely and is accounted for." But her attitude and superiority complex got in the way. If you want to people to do something your way, ask or say it in a way that they will think about how it benefits them, not you.

So she said “I’m uncomfortable“ and yet she got in the elevator with him. This is gotten way out of control and it’s happening way too often. It makes me embarrassed to be white. Kudos to D’Arraion for keeping his cool.

This is just a statement about my southern upbringing. Born in Mississippi raised in Memphis. Daddy born in Nebraska settled in Chicago . My point is I grew up in the middle of white territory. Not once did I ever hear my wonderful parents refer to people of color by the N word. This was years ago, I was born in1944. My point is not all of us were racist, nor are we now.

She has just created a major life crisis for herself and is receiving terrible remarks in response to her behavior. However, Mr. Toles is looking beyond her behavior to address the human being. First what I’d like to say is that the woman’s behavior is disgusting and primitive. H/e Americans need to ask themselves how is it that this is happening in 2018. I was fortunate to be raised in one of the most diverse places in the U.S., if not the world, so I believe I’m qualified to share why ppl may be racist. I have made friends with lots of ppl of different backgrounds. A) lack of diversity in their areas B) but largely due to the media. Shows like Maury and Bill Cunningham, don’t do any favors for black ppl. 3) Also, I see that it’s beyond frustrating to be black in America. I may be able to relate a little w/ maybe having a mental illness. Many ppl have called me bi-polar and as a result I purposely acted like it bc my response was, “I’ll show you what bipolar looks like really!” Let’s just say, it did nothing to help my cause. Don’t feed into stereotypes..it only makes things worse.

What she did was so wrong......but im trying to find the racist element here? Whats to say that she wouldn't do this to a white young man she didn't recognise that was entering the building? In residential buildings like i have been in like this there was always an issue with "tailgating". The building manager would always say to never let someone in the building that hasnt held there fob to the key pad and it flashes green. A huge lesson was learned one year when an abusive boyfriend got into the building and beat his girlfriend unconscious. I think she felt she had got to the point of no return before he showed her his fob and did the rest to prove a point. But because we dont know if she would do this to ANYONE entering the building i think its wrong to assume she did it because of his colour. :/

Your scenario implies that a woman questioning the abusive boyfriend would have stopped him entering the building. Can't begin to explain how unlikely that would be or how dangerous.

This makes me angry and frustrated on so many levels. His restraint not to cuss her entitled self out is beyond astonishing because she had it coming. He was such the better person! She demeaned him In so many ways. Blocked him! questioned him, who, why, where? She did not let it go! Kept on and on! Followed him! How dare she to begin with? She is going to do this (self entitlement)to the wrong human someday and be very shocked at the result. Just Wow. She definitely looked stupid.

Thinking people 'have it coming' in the form of being cussed out is a bit unhelpful. If anyone starts that they instantly alter the dynamics and make themselves look bad. If we all treat ignorance with politeness and, if necessary, explanations (which were NOT necessary here) then life goes far more smoothly for us all.

I tried hard to think of an explanation for her behavior, maybe he didn't have a key, was wandering aimlessly. But the video ain't good. So, in order to look on the bright side I am going to cling to the hope that 99.9 % of people will think her behavior is abhorrent and beyond abnormal, and maybe there is hope for us becoming classless society (the good kind of classless) someday. Also, maybe this is photoshop? They forgot to give her the required Starbucks cup to go with the yoga pants/vest/and brown boots uniform.

This is not racist! This is a secured building that requires a keyfob to get in the building! And yes when you would out of a secured building and someone is trying to enter without using their key, you feel responsible! She didnt recognize him as a resident and she only wanted to feel secure by seeing his keyfob and she would have left him alone! I couldnt even watch the rest of the video. OMG i use to work in a secured building and people would always try to come in while i was coming out and I always made them show employee ID or they had to go through main entrance, regardless of race! Now had she said nothing to him and just called the police, then she would have been called a racist because then people would say she would have just asked a white man but didnt ask him because he was black.

Omg. HE is the obvious racist here. Are you kidding me? He lives in a secure building. You aren't supposed to let anyone piggy back into the building off of your access. She was walking out of the building with her dog and he tries to go around her and into the building. If he's supposed to be there, he'd have the key fob or the code. He knows the rules, doesn't he want his secure building to be safe? Why didn't he just follow the rules, let her shut the door behind her and then let himself in like you're supposed to? I wouldn't have let this stranger in. Black, white or otherwise. I like how he assumed she won't let him in because he's black. Not just because he's a stranger. And pulls the race card. She obviously wasn't afraid of him as she entered the elevator with him and she was just as polite as he was. He instigated the problem by not following the rules. Because she's white she's clearly a racist. What a load of s**t.

Have you read her side of the story? He followed here through a key FOB secured door, She asked to see his key FOB rather than letting someone she did not know was a resident into the building, if he had just pulled out his key there wouldn't have been a problem.

When i look at it that is just stupid beyond imagination. But if she was doing her job as she should then firing her would not be in my opinion the best thing to do. A good worker will find new job easily. It will be a drag but she could. A big fine that she would have to pay would be a better thing. It would be in "rates" so the money she earned would be just enough to pay the bills and buy some food but nothing fancy. And make it last for some time so it would be cumbersome. Now she will just find another job this way or the other, and her mind set will probably wont change. Then again trying to reason with this case may be just waste of time.

She acted inappropriately either way, but was she trying to block him because he was black or because he didn't use the keypad to enter a secured building? She specifically asks him to use the keypad. I would be suspicious if somebody entered a secured building as I opened the door instead of using the keypad, too. I wouldn't have physically blocked them, but I would have called security regardless of their color.

So I agree that she was an idiot and mean but I'm still not sure if this began as racism. Why isn't it possible that she saw that he didn't use the Main door key and refused to show it and just wanted to make sure that he's not there to do harm? Since he was a complete stranger to her. And yes, she acted like a moron for most of the time but why are people so sure that it was racism since the beginning?

Why are you all assuming she's racist? She asked him, before he started recording, if he could show his FOB. He went in because she has the door propped open and she had never seen him before. She was actually following the protocol of her apartment building after someone got mugged there. He could have just been polite and shown her his fob and understood. Rather than turn into something racial.

When you hear the story from the other side...I may get some hate from this, but here we are. The man showed no identification, did not have his keys, and he tried to push his way in. Here's the story from that of the woman: "When I noticed an individual that I did not know here, my only thought was to follow directions I had been given by condo association board members repeatedly; and that’s to never allow access to anyone that you don’t know,” she said. Thornton had several emails from the condo association telling residents what to do if they were faced with a situation like this. https://wgntv.com/2018/10/16/white-woman-who-tried-to-block-black-tenant-from-entering-building-speaks-out/ It's always best to try to get both sides, and this woman has been getting death threats. I've run into silly asses like her before. In fact, I was questioned by some moronic curtain twitcher in my own neighbourhood once because she didn't think my car was "expensive enough" that I should be allowed to go to my own home. This may earn me some hate, but here we are. I read an article about this situation, and the man in question would not show any identification and did not have the key assigned to him, and tried to force his way in. The woman, Hillary Thornton, said the man didn’t have a key fob to get inside and forced his way in the apartment building. She reached out to share her side of the story after being called a racist and receiving death threats. “When I noticed an individual that I did not know here, my only thought was to follow directions I had been given by condo association board members repeatedly; and that’s to never allow access to anyone that you don’t know,” she said. https://wgntv.com/2018/10/16/white-woman-who-tried-to-block-black-tenant-from-entering-building-speaks-out/

You're just going to believe all that despite the video? He had a key fob. He used his key to get in his apartment. He said he buzzed in. She is not security. I don't wish hate on her but condo association board members need to stop making people feel they should be putting themselves at risk - if he was doing something illegal do you really think it was a safe thing to do? It is not.

Funny how everyone is calling her a racist without knowing her or her intentions. Sure she's was out of line for blocking his entrance but not once did she use a racial slur. She wasn't obviously afraid of the "black" man because she followed him around, she didn't call the cops immediately, nor did she protectively clutch her dog. Everyone is so quick to jump to conclusions and share these videos but I never see anyone sharing the opposite videos when white people are bullied, jumped or harassed on here. BTW, before you judge, I'm Hispanic.

It's the assumption she makes that he doesn't belong. He tells her he lives there and she doesn't believe him and immediately demands to know which unit. He doesn't have to tell her but he tells her the floor number. Then she starts following him and asking 'who are you going to see' because she still doesn't believe that he lives there. Not until they are on the fourth floor and it looks like, wow, maybe he could live here after all, that she comes up with the neighbour excuse for wanting to know who he is. If she felt justified in doubting he’s a resident why come up with this second excuse suddenly? It sounded ridiculous after everything else she had done. Racism is far from being about just about fear. There is thinking that you are better, that you have the right to demand answers because you don't think a person should be where they are. She doesn't need to use one racial slur - it's her actions and her treatment of him. Part 1

I also live in a closed complex and I do not hold the door open for someone else if I don't know who they are. I do it for my own safety regardless of race, gender, etc. I do not want to take sides but if the gentleman would have shown his key card and said "I live here" or even said, "I live here but I forgot my key card, my name... and I live in unit..." I'm sure things would have gone differently.

Or instead of blocking him she could have just explained herself in a nice polite way. She was extremely rude right from the start. You are putting all the blame on him and yet her behaviour is not on. When someone starts rudely making demands it tends to rile most people. Whether or not it is a good idea to check who is following you into the building you don't have the right to demand proof they live there unless you are security or the police. He didn't have to do a damn thing she asked of him.

Let’s take all the racism out of this. There are two “people” in a city environment living in a “secure” building. One enters the building and apparently another follows and is confronted by the first. The first person ask to see the other persons key. Second person refuses. Everything could have been deescalated by the second person closing the door and using their key to access the building. If not, then uncomfortable person one should have called 911 and stayed in public view. Also why would uncomfortable person 1 get into a closed elevator with person 2. Not smart. People, take race and gender out of the equation and look at the situation.

I don't know...I'm white and when I moved into a secure building I got stopped at the main entrance several times before most of the neighbors learned who I was and which apartment I was in. Once it even happened after I used the keycard (it was an older lady). This isn't unusual to me, in my experience people do it all the time in buildings like these.

Only the police or any building security has the right to ask for proof. No-one has to provide it to residents no matter what they might think. You can ask, but it should be nicely done. Why be rude to someone you might be living alongside? There are many reasons why someone might be in the building and not live there. Visitors to residents, any number of trades. You can disagree all you like but thinking someone should have 'rights' is very different from legally having THE right. This woman was rude and he only pushed past after asking several times and then politely saying he was going to. She should not have been blocking him.

This didn't seem racially motivated as much as gender motivated. Women are understandably afraid of men that try to gain access to a building they are in without using a proper key. If he was going in through the door that she opened, then he should have shown her the key to show he had access to the building too. Otherwise, close the door and use the key to gain access. When she saw that he had a key to his own apartment, she said she would like to meet him as a neighbor. I don't think that her question as to whether he had a key was unreasonable since he was gaining access to the building by her opening the door instead of with the key. Residents have a duty to not allow others in the building. I'm not sure why though she called the cops when he had the key to his own apartment.

It's HOW she did it. Demanding answers, refusing entry as though she had the right. She could have explained politely and if she had it would probably have been so different. Yet people are quick to blame him for not obeying her orders, her DEMANDS. She isn't security. The fact she called the cops AFTER he let's himself in to his apartment is what makes it clear to me that she had a problem with him. She didn't think someone like him could be a tenant.

Remove the race/colour issue and the pertinent facts are: 1. security coded door for residence ignored by man entering building. 2. adult male met by smaller stature female at door who questioned if he lived there to protect security as he did not use security code (or fob) 3. adult male physically forced his way into building while holding a camera focused on the smaller female. 4, smaller female followed adult male to apartment door to ensure safety of her neighbours against a suspicious male who forced entry into building. 5. Informed Police of suspicions because thats what a good citizen does, "SEE SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING" As a physically imposing male i do not underestimate how intimidating my size can be.

She wasn't intimidated in the slightest! How about - door was already open so he just started to go through, perhaps not thinking about it, and is very rudely stopped. She could have been friendly and said hello. Maybe a nice 'I've not seen you here before, have you recently moved in?' Or politely ask to see his key. Instead she was rude. She blocks him. He asks politely to get by several times before doing so with minimal contact that she causes. She was NOT intimidated despite her smaller stature as she chose to get in the lift with him. HE was filming because he was uncomfortable. She took the lead on all the interactions that took place. She watched him go in to his own flat, with his own key yet she decides he can't be a tenant and the police should be involved. He even gave her his name before going inside. I find it hard to believe she did this for the good of her neighbours! She didn't want HIM to be a tenant of 'her' luxury block.

this one isn't as open and shut as a lot of these cases. I work in a secure stare building. We aren't allowed to let anyone on the elevator without ID. It works same in a secure residential building. I can see her wanting to see his key fob...but she went over the line when she didn't stop when he said he'd been buzzed in. Then to follow him? Worse, to call the cops AFTER she saw him go in with a key! She was 100% wrongat that stage, but I do think he could have been a bit more forthcoming atbthe beginning. I mean, he lives in a secured building for a reason. Would he like his neighbors to just hold the door for any stranger? He could tell she lived there, she was coming out with her fob. Why couldng he have just introduced himself, "Im Mr. Toles. I live in 403." How hard is that? It's what I would have done.

The standards for secure state buildings vs residential buildings generally aren't the same. Yes, he could have introduced himself but do people when confronted with someone who is rude, pushy and demanding things she has no right to demand? She was horrendous and it isn't any wonder he didn't want to go along with any of her 'requests'! She is not the building's security.

Why should the company, who had nothing to do with this, lose out while trying to change her attitude? Okay, maybe make her take them if she is willing to pay OR she loses her job. She can take them in her own time too. Sadly, I suspect it's too much privilege and not lack of education that's responsible and all you'd probably gain is someone who just hides their racism better.

Well, there is polite curiosity and saying Hello, we haven't met before and then there is blocking, demanding answers, refusing to believe his answers. Going into his own property and having the police called on you because she decided she didn't believe him. Don't be so naive as to fall for that neighbour s**t - that was just another tactic. No-one bar building security and the police have the right to demand anything of this man.

That might sound harsh but if it happens to enough of these racist pieces of s**t then maybe, just maybe, they'll stop doing this s**t. No one should have to put up with that behavior. Throughout that entire video, I wanted to knock her teeth down her throat. Good for him for being patient and not doing that, he's probably a better person than I am.

Sorry, this isn't racism. From what I can tell is a building that requires some kind of key card to enter, and all residents should have one. He didn't have one, and he was trying to walk into the building as she was walking out. That's suspicious regardless of race. She even kept saying, "Do you have a keycard?" I work in a building that's the same way, and they actively encourage us to question people trying to get in that don't have key cards. It's a security concern Watching this gave me no indication her concern was based on race. This is a woman who is being mislabled unfairly as a racist.

As she is about to leave the building to walk her dog, an unknown man tries to squeeze in without a key. She demands to use his own key to unlock the building door. He refuses. She tries to block him. He pushes her aside, making his way to the elevator... This brave woman is trying to protect her neighborhood single-handedly standing up to a man she suspects to be a burglar. To make sure he is not up to any evil, she even has the courage to follow him alone into the elevator. And only leaves him, when she sees his key opening an apartment door. Internet lot cheers and scorns as it sees this woman's life ruined, her losing her job. What is wrong with you, people? What is wrong with you? This is even worse than Justine Sacco's story.

He doesn't squeeze in. She blocks him and starts questioning. He said he 'buzzed' and as she was going out & we don't see his approach we can't be sure he didn't. The fact is she's still questioning him even as he goes into his apartment. THEN she calls the police and just because she was uncomfortable and didn't think he was a tenant. He used his key! Her problem was that he wasn't her idea of the right type of tenant. Do you really think if she'd been been pleasant that this is still what would have happened? Some people say 'he could have just used his key' and blame him. How about her saying 'I'm sorry, we're not supposed to hold the door for people we don't know so would you mind using your own key this time and once I know you have it then I can hold the door in future, and I'm X by the way'. She was bloody rude and antagonising. Most people get stubborn when doing nothing wrong and yet get bombarded with questions.

I don’t see why this is racist. It’s only a very assertive, careful woman. I would personally let someone after me in without asking, but there are a lot of people who always ask others who try to get in after them where they live and if they can show a key. I don’t think that it would have made a difference for this woman if he would have been a white male of his age (filming with a mobile phone, that alone would look suspicious to me...). Plus - really - why film everything and put it online?

What is even more disturbing is that she appeared to think she was justified in acting in such a creepy intrusive manner because his skin colour is different than hers. I kind of think she sounded drunk. Which is NO excuse. The look on her face though when he's going to his floor....you know she is thinking "C**p. Maybe he does live here?!" Then she tries to spin it that she wants to meet him. Lady, you were in the wrong and you look absolutely crazy.

Nope. The police can't do much. He probably has grounds to ask for a restraining order, though, and since restraining orders are public records, that would pretty much screw her for life.

Not once did I ever hear my wonderful parents refer to people of color by the N word. This was years ago, I was born in1944. My point is not all of us were racist, nor are we now.

I am going to follow Mr. Toles request. If he can maintain his cool with this woman, then I am going to try to do the same. She has just created a major life crisis for herself and is receiving terrible remarks in response to her behavior. However, Mr. Toles is looking beyond her behavior to address the human being. Kindness is what will make the difference, Thank you Mr. Toles!

She never said anything about him being black. The race card is always brought up by the black people. All she wanted was to see if he had a door fob so he wouldn't follow her in like he was trying to do. He obviously didn't have one. What's the problem here?

Because telling racists that they're racist is scary? You go live in your cave and hide out sucking your thumb. The rest of us will make sure that the racists do not get away with their garbage.

Here's the thing. They fire her from her job, and she thinks this guy caused me to get fired. Wouldn''t it be better to make her take sensitivity and unconscious bias training classes as a condition of keeping her job? She's ignorant. She needs education.

Why should the company, who had nothing to do with this, lose out while trying to change her attitude? Okay, maybe make her take them if she is willing to pay OR she loses her job. She can take them in her own time too. Sadly, I suspect it's too much privilege and not lack of education that's responsible and all you'd probably gain is someone who just hides their racism better.

omg all she asked him do was show his keyfob, she had never seen him before the video clearly shows this, she never said anything racist to him, he should of seen she was a little concerned acted like a gentleman to put her at ease n showed his keyfob, at the end she even said if youre a neighbour id like to meet you, living in apartments can be scary, she was just been protective for god sake and now she gets called racist...thats crazy..if i hadnt seen any 1 in my apartment block before i would of been curious gosh

All I see is a woman challenging a man that pushed past her into a security building without using his own entry fob. She asked to see his fob. He only had to say, I'm new here, here's my fob. I'd have her as a neighbour! Playing the racism card here looks like bullish*t.

I sincerely hope the good folks of the internet ruin that woman's life.
