Bored Panda was interested to find out more about the link between wealth and happiness. Writer Ariane, the author of ‘The How of Happy,’ was kind enough to illuminate some things for us. She noted that wealth is important, but it’s only one of many factors that contribute to true happiness and life satisfaction.
“Money makes life a lot easier, but the key is to remember what’s really important: the things that money can’t buy, such as love, kindness, honesty, loyalty, etc.,” she shared.
What’s more, the happiness expert suggested that lottery winners ought to “stick with the people who have always been loyal to you before winning the money, rather than people who are attracted to you for your newfound wealth.”
Ariane noted that wealth and happiness do correlate. However, it’s not necessarily a linear progression.
“After you’re on about $100,000 a year, more money doesn’t make you significantly happier,” the author of ‘The How of Happy’ pointed out.
Meanwhile, when it comes to figuring out if your relationship with someone is genuine or based on (their) greed, it’s usually enough to take take a peek at their actions.
“If someone is regularly asking you for money then I think it’s pretty clear what motivates them. My closest friend never asks me for money and always makes a point of refunding me if I give him too much. That’s the kind of person you want in your life,” Ariane warned.
It’s any content creator’s dream to create something so brilliant that it’s still relevant years and years later. Now, 9 years later, we can firmly say that redditor u/BlakeClas has succeeded in creating something that is an inseparable part of internet culture. Odds are that you’ve read their posts about being unlucky enough to win the lottery sometime in the past, completely by accident. It keeps popping up here and there, where huge sums of money are the tantalizing topic of conversation.
Retaining an attorney, taking the lump sum offered, keeping things under wraps as long as possible, investing your money, and deciding exactly how much cash you’re willing to give your family and friends: this lies at the core of the redditor’s advice. Very recently, financial expert Sam Dogen, the founder of Financial Samurai and the author of ‘Buy This, Not That,’ explained to Bored Panda that there’s no putting the genie back in the bottle once word gets out that you’re wealthy. So if you were planning on practicing stealth wealth (i.e. living a middle-class lifestyle and staying under the radar with your riches), sadly, you’re all out of luck at that point.
“Everybody will do their own mental calculations of how much you can spend, how nice of a car or house you can buy, and what type of fancy vacations you can take. Your acquaintances and non-closest friends will start to resent you if you don’t treat them to nice meals and pay for things,” Sam told us during an interview, earlier.
“If your partner shares your secret of winning the lottery when you explicitly asked not to, you can no longer trust them with other big secrets. Given a healthy relationship is based on trust, a lot of work will be required to heal the betrayal. It may be best to start over and find a new partner, someone who doesn’t know your wealth status. The truly wealthy learn how to convince people they are middle class in order to blend in,” the founder of Financial Samurai said.
The financial expert noted that one way to inform your family and friends that you won’t be fulfilling their demands right this very minute is to “simply say your money is earmarked towards specific charitable institutions you care about.” After you’ve given to these causes, according to your plan, “then you can consider friend and relative requests.”
“Lending money to friends and family often creates weird dynamics. Instead of lending money, it’s better to just give money to friends and family without expectations. If you’ve won the lottery, you might as well make as many lottery winners as possible with your closest relationships,” the expert suggested.
Though wealth won’t buy you true happiness outright (there are other factors that contribute to this, from an active social life to having good health and working with purpose), it’s still an essential part of the equation. Broadly speaking, wealthier countries tend to have higher happiness scores.
Meanwhile, new research suggests that people’s emotional well-being continues to rise the wealthier they get. Having a financial cushion gives you a sense of stability when things get tough. However, the people who equated money with success were less happy than others, CNBC reports. The bottom line is that money is important; but it’s far from the most vital aspect. At least as far as happiness is concerned!

Where I live if you win the lottery the organization will give you advisers and even psycholocal help to deal with all th money. And a big advice they give is that you shouldn't tell it to everybody. I think those things can help to prevent the problems adressed in the article.

Winning the lottery doesn't doom you, it only shows who you really are when money can get you anything and get you out of most things. If you "turned" into a glutton or became greedy, weak emotionally and intellectually or just a general a-hole, you were already these things, now you just have money. The money didn't do anything, it just sits there, all the bad things that happened are down to you as a person. A hard pill to swallow for most I am sure.

I live in a state in the United States where you can't claim lottery winnings anonymously that's a big reason why I have never bought a ticket and I never will. If I could keep it 100% a secret and help out people I know/donate to charities without anyone knowing that I did it and how I had the money to do it I might buy a ticket. The odds of winning a high stakes lottery are against you. What I find annoying is how many people do win who have more money than they need already. Having said that, my wife and I taught our second oldest son a lesson about the lottery several years ago. He was 18 and believed if he played long enough he would win. One Christmas we spent $1900 ( yeah I know) on lottery tickets to prove how difficult winning was. We didn't win a damn thing but our son never bought another lottery ticket. It cost us $1900 but it was worth the gamble. The only time I was glad I didn't win anything.

Lol, when I was five or so my dad admonished me not to bother with those coin operated prize machines that dump a plastic "egg" with something inside. "You'll never get the watch, just junk". If you win serious money, take your immediate family and move somewhere where rich people live like New York or Palm Springs. That solves a lot of the parasite problems. But really, if you were bad with money before your win, you’ll be bad with it after but on a much larger scale. There’s lots of people who win big but you never hear about them again. That’s because they are living in their beach house in Hawaii in a gated community.

A guy won who lived by the hwy I took to work. Sudden bigger house built with enclosed pool and a flashy new car. Watched it devolve over a year and a bit as I drove by. A few more cars and big pick-ups, Lots of parties and friends over. Anyway, the house and poolhouse are now in disrepair, the yard looks like a used car lot/junkyard and the property is over-run with weeds. Not many friends seem to hanging out either.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! Although, I've never purchased a lottery ticket in my life, so that may slightly decrease my chance of winning, but not by much. The odds of winning with a ticket you bought are probably about the same odds as finding a winning ticket on the ground.

Finding a winning lottery ticket on the ground doesn’t help much unless it’s a small amount. If you win big you have to prove ownership by saying where you purchased the ticket and around what time of day and stuff.

Or even just fairly rich. Being a millionaire isn't that rich in several big cities. Even the 10's of millions wouldn't make you "ultra" rich. Still, you want to make sure people don't get in the habit of seeing you as their sole meal ticket (not counting dependents or employees or whatever of course) or of thinking of how much better life would be if they had some of what you had, and that it wouldn't be so terribly hard to part you from it.

I remember being in the Vanpool coming back from work and we started talking about the lottery. Someone asked me what I would do. Most of what is on this list. But also create an LLC (good for hiding the true owners) and then go on linkedin and change my title to consultant. Tell friends and family job requires frequent travel. Buy some land somewhere we want to live build a comfortable TWO bedroom house (its only two of us), which is easy to clean and maintain. Also a good fence around it with a gate that can only be opened by us. If someone shows up to our door, call the police. People will always need a roof over their heads. I would buy apartments and places to then rent, in multiple locations, especially places that are visited by tourists like a hotel in the Maldives. I would live about the same but invest and make sure the money will come back to me, constantly. Never put all your eggs in one basket, aka don't buy all the properties in just one place. One point that is 100% incorrect: Talk to a financial advisor. Make sure they're registered and accredited, but for the live of g-d when handling large sums like that you need help. There's so many rules,laws, and regulations concerning financial transactions it's painful. They can help you navigate the minefield and taxes, and if you're setting up any form of trust you'll want additional guidance beyond just legalities from an attorney.

This why I swore to myself if I ever won the jackpot that I'd intentionally make myself the most repellant Scrooge possible. That way I'd know that anyone who would put up with me and didn't have to was obviously after my money. I'd dump all mail that wasn't bills into the trash because I know they'd all be from scumbags demanding me to buy them a car or some other pricey c**p. As an accountant I'd say this is 95%+ correct. Some areas will allow you to claim the prize as a trust (to keep your name out of it - so don't sign the ticket till you get that lawyer). Do get an investment person, but only invest the interest you make / annuity income you don't spend. It's basically fun money at that point. Get a really good, slightly sketchy accountant, cough cough, to do additional trust (i.e. charity trusts, etc.) and estate planning. The key to the big wins is to get as much as possible out of your name. Or just set-up a family trust and buy a villa somewhere in Europe and take a few years away from everyone. Maybe a good plastic surgeon as well.

Winning the lottery doesn't doom you, it only shows who you really are when money can get you anything and get you out of most things. If you "turned" into a glutton or became greedy, weak emotionally and intellectually or just a general a-hole, you were already these things, now you just have money. I live in a state in the United States where you can't claim lottery winnings anonymously that's a big reason why I have never bought a ticket and I never will. The odds of winning a high stakes lottery are against you. What I find annoying is how many people do win who have more money than they need already. Having said that, my wife and I taught our second oldest son a lesson about the lottery several years ago. He was 18 and believed if he played long enough he would win. One Christmas we spent $1900 ( yeah I know) on lottery tickets to prove how difficult winning was. We didn't win a damn thing but our son never bought another lottery ticket. A guy won who lived by the hwy I took to work. Sudden bigger house built with enclosed pool and a flashy new car. Watched it devolve over a year and a bit as I drove by. A few more cars and big pick-ups, Lots of parties and friends over. Anyway, the house and poolhouse are now in disrepair, the yard looks like a used car lot/junkyard and the property is over-run with weeds. Not many friends seem to hanging out either.

People will always need a roof over their heads. I would buy apartments and places to then rent, in multiple locations, especially places that are visited by tourists like a hotel in the Maldives. I would live about the same but invest and make sure the money will come back to me, constantly. Never put all your eggs in one basket, aka don't buy all the properties in just one place. That way you will forever have an income despite you using money that wouldn't have lasted you forever.

So did it occur to any lottery winners that with that much money you can buy yourself a new identity? Set up trusts for your family and just go away? Might be painful to separate yourself from them, but it beats your son-in-law or cousin killing you in a botched kidnapping. Money in vast quantities makes people crazy. Especially if it isn't theirs.

One point that is 100% incorrect: Talk to a financial advisor. Make sure they're registered and accredited, but for the live of g-d when handling large sums like that you need help. There's so many rules,laws, and regulations concerning financial transactions it's painful. They can help you navigate the minefield and taxes, and if you're setting up any form of trust you'll want additional guidance beyond just legalities from an attorney.

Whittaker's biggest mistake was that he didn't get out of that hillbilly state asap. He came close to leaving but the Governor talked him out of it. The poor guy was surrounded by meth-heads and rednecks who were all out to rob him blind. He never stood a chance.

This why I swore to myself if I ever won the jackpot that I'd intentionally make myself the most repellant Scrooge possible. That way I'd know that anyone who would put up with me and didn't have to was obviously after my money. I'd dump all mail that wasn't bills into the trash because I know they'd all be from scumbags demanding me to buy them a car or some other pricey c**p. I'd get a secret unlisted phone number but keep around a "normal" phone just to kick back and laugh at all the voicemails I'd get from moochers. I'd make sure that when I croak that I'm buried like a Pharoah and anything left would go to any charities that DIDN'T try to bug me.

I have nieces and nephews with whom I don't interact (their decision). But I'll bet you dollars to donuts that as soon as they get wind of me coming into lottery money, I'll suddenly become their "favorite" auntie. Their generous, kind auntie. Riiiiiiiiiight. By that time, I will have moved out of the state and into a nice, non-HOA neighborhood, into a security-gated house for which I have paid cash. True, it's a dream. But dreams are possibilities that remain to be brought to fruition. 😉

As an accountant I'd say this is 95%+ correct. Some areas will allow you to claim the prize as a trust (to keep your name out of it - so don't sign the ticket till you get that lawyer). Do get an investment person, but only invest the interest you make / annuity income you don't spend. It's basically fun money at that point. Get a really good, slightly sketchy accountant, cough cough, to do additional trust (i.e. charity trusts, etc.) and estate planning. The key to the big wins is to get as much as possible out of your name. Or just set-up a family trust and buy a villa somewhere in Europe and take a few years away from everyone. Maybe a good plastic surgeon as well.

You, no matter how poor you are should take $150 and get yourself a holding company out of Wyoming....no state income tax, and anyone wanting to find out ownership needs a court order 1st. It's anonymous.. transfer all your s****y assets to the holding company you own, and your cash....and never ever mention this to anyone but your children, maybe....you can live anywhere in the world and do this... And maybe buy dero or Monero, untraceable & untaxable. Be a ghost always, even if you're living on pocket lint. Where I live they have an online store. I put $30 dollars on it two years ago and am still playing the minimal amount for every game for that time. I am always at odds, Since I regularly break even, why play? It is the chance not the amount I play each game that stops me from wasting money. So if I did win, I am pretty sure I wo7ld not waste it

There are probably more sad stories than listed here. Money is the root of all evil. Even if you never win the lottery. I once told my uncle I won 10000 dollars at a casino. The next thing out of his mouth was could he borrow 1500 dollars. My wife and I never told anyone else if we won at the casino.
