No one said life was going to be easy. In fact, it can be downright tough at times. But despite the challenges we face, we can remain resilient. In fact, some people seem to be much better at it than others.

So to find out more about resilience and the power of positivity, a while back, Bored Panda spoke with Susan Petang, a certified divorce coach and the creator of “The Quiet Zone Coaching,” who teaches people how to stop feeling overwhelmed and start waking up happy in the morning again. Petang argues that the very first step towards building mental resilience is instead of viewing these unfortunate moments as "failures" or "misfortunes," view them as learning opportunities.

It’s important that we sit back and consider a couple of things about any difficult situation we’re in at that moment. “What can we learn from this? How can we use this to become a better human being/worker/parent/partner?” Petang said and added that crucially, it's all a matter of mindset.

When I was a kid in the 80's, AIDS was the nightmare no one could imagine waking from. I'm still utterly amazed by how it no longer is a death sentence and the fact that properly medicated, you needn't worry about your partner or unborn child being infected. I know it's not a miracle, but it really is. I never expected it to ever be something this manageable. (And thanks eternally to the doctors, nurses, scientists, researchers and advocates who labored all those years just to get us to this point. You all deserve to be recognized as saints and miracle workers).

When I was at college and university in the mid-late 90's there was a lot of information and warnings around about AIDS but also still a lot of ignorance. This was a time when I was becoming not only sexually active, but aware of my own sexuality. At the time, the warnings about AIDS did worry and concern me and I was always very careful to use a condom with the people I slept with, both male and female. Unfortunately they didn't worry some of my friends enough. Of the LGBT+ people I went through college and university with, almost a quarter of them contracted HIV and almost half of those who contracted it have since died from AIDS. This was at a time when AIDS treatment was still in its infancy and it was not anywhere near as effective as it is now. There was also much more stigma about AIDS and STD's in general and people were far more reluctant to get tested. People far too often did not know they had HIV until it was too late for the treatments at the time to be effective.

A few steps away, he had a telescope aimed at the sky. Sure as hell, there was Jupiter. It was insane. Obviously had an impact, because I'm still talking about it.

This reminds me of one of my favourite moments when I was in the US - I went to the Brookfield zoo and a volunteer walked up and said "Hey, do you want to see the world's largest scorpion?" and being me I was like "OMG yes I do". He was a bug guy, we chatted for ages and he just does it to share his love of bugs. I think about that guy a lot.

Meanwhile, some people are more naturally resilient than others. “It's because they learned to think positively at a young age,” Petang said. It turns out that our attitude towards life - the good, the bad, and the ugly - is formed earlier than we think, way before we go to kindergarten.

“Positivity isn't about putting your head in the sand and singing 'lalalala' when bad things happen; it's actually just the knowledge that we'll be OK no matter what,” the life coach explained.

BP moderators, these words you blur out are so full of emotion! When I have to stop and think about why it's blurred out in reality, it loses something in the initial thought. Just realize, there's nothing wrong with "bad words". But you should know at this point, from your users, that true emotion should not be censored!

I also have a son who is nonverbal autistic. I talk to him all the time and tell him I can't wait to hear him talk one day. He babbles, and can certainly get loud at times, but none of the sounds are ever words. I always tell him that I can hear him and always ask him what's he saying because I want to know so very much. I'm hoping one day I get to hear him say "Ready, Set Go" I know the waterworks wouldn't stop for several minutes.

What’s interesting is how closely positivity and resilience are, in fact, related. “Positivity is the understanding and belief that you'll be able to bounce back from anything; resilience is when you actually do it,” the life coach argues.

“I teach my clients to use The Power Questions. It's a great way to interrupt the spiral of emotions when everything is hitting the fan!” They are as follows:

“How important is this, really? Don't make mountains out of molehills.

What is something positive and constructive I can do about this? Be solution-oriented instead of blame-oriented.

What emotions am I feeling right now? By identifying and labeling them, we shrink their power over us."

I did this with my kids when they were little too. Everyone was very happy to answer the kids questions. One young lady did not want to talk about why she was missing a leg but was absolutely amazing. She told the children (with great enthusiasm) that she was sat on by an elephant while visiting the circus. The kids were wide eyed and had questions about how she learned to live without a leg which she answered honestly - it was hard in the beginning and she was still adjusting but that she was really excited to get a prosthetic leg next week. When the kids were satisfied they ran off to play. I apologized if I had made her uncomfortable and presuming that she was ok to talk about her experiences. She smiled sadly but thanked me. She said it was fairly new resulting from a trauma and that she hadn't been prepared for such open honest questions but said it was much much better than the silent stares and whispers. She was graceful, courageous and amazing and my kids remember her well.

I’m always at a bit of a loss as to how to react when my kids ask about other people’s disabilities or appearances in public. I will NEVER shame them for asking a question and always want to emphasise that all people are different somehow, but I feel like I’m left with two options: either I speak for the person in question (which feels rude - giving my own narrative to someone else’s experience) or, ask the person in question to tell their own story (which also feels rude because they don’t owe anyone a story or explaination and are probably just doing their grocery shopping not relive a hideous car accident).

As someone with hidden disabilities that have become present at times and loads of friends/families with visible disabilities, I think how commenter Ienka and OP handle it is best. I’m not the spokesperson for all disabled people and sometimes I’m really not in the mood and tell people that, but I think we’d prefer these responses to the long stares, rude whispered comments, or ignorant assumptions we usually get. Also, my mom encouraged me to “look it up” if I was so curious as a kid and in this age of cell phones and instant info, I think that’s a great way as well. Had a kid help me through a public panic attack that way cuz he looked it up on his cell phone and came over to help, it was awesome and I think about him A LOT.

I don’t understand why people react poorly to disability. An assisistive device whether it be a wheelchair or communication device is a part of that persons body. It functions as a literally part of their body. It’s not weird. It’s not unusual. It’s incredible that we have so many devices out there now to help people access everyday activities, and people who use such devices should be seen as physically and mentally strong and badass.

Kids are a little smarter than we tend to give them credit for, especially kids these days that I’ll say are exposed to different cultures much easier and earlier than many older people. For reference, I’m 26, had been called the n -word by a classmate by the time I was 6, and lived in Montgomery, AL at probably about their age when we went to the Rosa Parks museum for a field trip and definitely got the concepts of “black people got treated unfairly, so we rose up and did these things to get fair treatment, some worked, some didn’t” at 4-5 years old.

The first thing I thought when I saw this was 'it must be a psychological relief to not have to shave a beard anymore when you're a transgender female.' Just having to do that every day must be a horrible feeling. I know I feel gross if I get even a couple of whiskers during my time of the month, lol. As an aside, they need to develop whatever hormone blocker/estrogen or testosterone drug people take to stop growing facial hair for our legs, lol. Can we not find a way to make this happen? I'm so tired of shaving.

For many homless people their beloved dog is the only friend they got, and often they treat their dogs better than they treat themselves, e.i. feeding the dog while the themselves starve. The bond between a dog and its owner can be a really strong one.

The homeless are just as human as you or me. In fact, I would go as far as to say that those with little give a lot more than those with a lot. That being said, can someone please put five euros in this dog's cap. (I'm pretty sure that the guy gave it to the dog when it was sunny, if you were wondering why).

Very true! I work with the homeless providing medical care. So many of these human beings have experienced trauma most of us cannot imagine. They were alone, scared, and trying to survive at an age that most of us were still playing with toys and our only concern was having to go to bed or do some chores. These people are not throw away lives, they are people who need love, compassion, and lots of mental and physical health care that most societies deem unnecessary or a waste of money. It breaks my heart every day.

Homeless people love their pets and will go to extremes for them to be cared for even most rich people usually won’t do, so to all the “activists” who insist on taking animals away from the homeless, f**k you.

Well, true animal advocates would never dream of separating a pet from their guardian, homeless or not. That’s why we have free pet food pantries that usually try to have free or very low cost vaccines and medicines for all in need.

The homeless in Prague would always make me sad, they'd never ask or openly beg but they'd keep their heads lowered and often to the ground. Always felt they were looked at as third class citizens.

They are nodding? This is not an evel remark, just a quick question about their heads lowered to the ground, and someone else above stated that they are junkies who are trying to get compassion.

Housing is NOT a privilege. Housing is a right for everyone, humans and dogs, particularly. I am so sorry anyone has to live this way. It's just not right. This is life and death. But these two best friends are there for each other; I just hope the rest of us can step up and be there for them too.

It’s so hard to go to these kinds of events when you are an introvert. I’ve tried meetups and since I’m not good at being the first person to initiate any conversation I leave having it been an nobodywantedtomeetup. Having this kid do what he did would be so ideal.

This reminds me of my husband discovering our Alexa does rain sounds and now he’s a total addict to it! “Can we play the rain sounds tonight honey? Can we?” I prefer the sounds of natural rain though so I look at the weather reports and get excited when rain is predicted in the forecast, especially around bedtime, so then I can tell him and we can geek out all day about “OMG, the natural rain sounds are coming tonight so we can sleep better, yay!” Long anecdote but hope you enjoy your rain sounds Pirates of Zen Pants and have a good life with someone to do “low key activities” with as well :)

💞💞💞 As the rain pattered down like a song. And the wind with her. Swishing and swaying. The trees seemed to reach for the sky. And the frogs did rejoice. And flowers did grow from it path. And with mother nature's tears forth came new beginnings and life.

after a bit of googling, sadly the program was discontinued. it was part of a vw "fun theory" campaign that only lasted a short while and was tested in several swedish cities. the attempt to "gamify" speeding resulted in a reduction of about 7 km/h overall before the promotion and after the promotion went into effect. i think it's a brilliant idea and more cities should look into this. as it is, we drivers just think of those speeding cameras as craven attempts by municipalities to cash in on drivers by often lowering the speed limit in the areas where the cameras are located. this would at least help us to hate them less.

well a horse were once appointed to the job of senator in ancient Rome, so why not? Dogs sometimes have a much better outlook on life than many people. Eat, sleep, love, exercise moderately and explore a bit, but in general relax and do not care too much about what goes on in the world, that is basically what you need to do with your life.

I think of the poor russians locked in there and locked out from the rest of the world every day. I dont want them to feel we dont care for them as well 💗 edited to add the first part that was cropped out by mistake

Why are people jumping to conclusions about "racism" (are you sure that's the right term?). Obviously the "evil Russians" are the armed soldiers who invaded their country, leveled entire cities, killed thousands of civilians, raped and tortured innocent people for fun, looted farming equipment and food, and blocked exports to starving nations, and NOT every man, women and child sitting at home who happens to be Russian. It breaks my heart this has gone on for 6.5 months while the world just watches, with gentle people having to enlist or be drafted to take up arms against invaders instead of being at home with their families, but sure, yeah, turn this into thinking that kid who might lose her dad, might lose everyone in her life, might lose her own, is being taught to hate others.

It's not about that kid, but about people in the West - you may be surprised how many do think that Russians are evil and that can cause significant harm.

Russians today are the same as Nazis in the 40s. Not every Nazi was evil but they as a group were held responsible for whatever decisions Hitler did. Why aren't the Russians held responsible for what they do in Ukraine? It's Russians killing people there, not Putin.

Jeans as wedding attire are fine. Do what you want on YOUR wedding day, let other people do what THEY want on THEIR wedding day - contrary to popular opinion, grooms can and do choose what they want to wear because they're actual adults.

This reminds me of my husband and my dog Bailey. When he first moved in after the wedding she growled and barked at him constantly because she wasn’t used to him, but then I got my husband to help me feed her in the morning and gradually weaned them off me and onto each other, so that now they love each other and I’ll often come home to my husband spooning, cuddling with the dog and telling her he loves her when he think I’m not listening and she even letting him sleep on her, something she NEVER let’s me do.

Don't let go of this guy. My guy, when I first met him, said I shouldn't "cater" to my old dog, like hand feeding her if she wasn't eating her food. One day, she wasn't too interested in her food, and I found him, kneeling by her, handing her pieces of chicken. I lost my girl about a year ago, but I have this man to this day.

So cute! My son does this too. We have a little garden cart with wheels I sit on while working and he asks me to pull him around for a little the insists I do too. He pulls really hard but can't so I tell him to turn around and pull with his arm behind him so he can pull better. As he's turned around I help push with my feet.

lol, Every parents experience on the toilet. Nothing like a little toddlers voice ringing out clear in a public toilet/bathroom offering words of encouragement for all to hear... then the little s**t tries to open the door with your underwear still round your ankles.

They really are so pure- I use a walking stick and can be prone to tripping over, my 4 year old nephew tried to "help me up off the floor" once. And my niece who was around 5 at the time, used to hold my walking stick and try and "help me walk" with it- which of course was more hinderance than help- but did I tells HER that?- heck no!

I hope that they realize that the rest of the world stands with them and most of us know this is not their doing. For once, a whole population isn't hated and blamed for the insanity brought on by their government (and even then, I'm not sure we can even blame a good portion of their officials. There is no safe way to go against Putin). Maybe this realization by the rest of the world is a good sign for the future.

My neighbor's dog was a great example of this. Rudy walked at the pace of a pregnant turtle, and would absolutely refuse to walk no more halfway through his daily walks. He was so slow and laid back, he should've been christened Spicoli. However, you should have seen him rolling on his back in his yard numerous times a day. The first time my husband and I witnessed this spectacle, one of us said in amused astonishment "Wow. That must be some seriously good grass", not realizing in the moment how appropriate that line really was. Once we realized what that sounded like, we spent the next few minutes and then the rest of Rudy's life cracking up over Rudy's good grass habit. I miss that silly stoner dog.

How about the "customers"? Some of them are going through some really stressful things too and being reminded about how you can also look at life as it is seen from a dog's perspective, can do quite a lot to calm you down. So I think that Shiloh has the potential to do much more than just help the employees.

Sadly, some people hates dogs and cats. When I first realized it, I was genuinely surprised and disappointed. I was 4 years old and saw my neighbor kick a very small kitty. Because it got in his way. I remember it so vividly like it was yesterday. I even had a nightmare few times about it.

As far as I can tell, this is what she actually looks like. Not all Downs look the same, and really? Saying they edited the Downs out.... what, she's only a good inclusion only if she has the strong telltale signs of classic Trisomy 21? Would...... would it be better is she had increased obvious mental instability and disfunction, that comes with some chromosomal abnormalities?? Because then her being in the bra and panty pictures would be ok? WHAT??? You know there are three different kinds of Downs, right? Trisomy 21 (nondisjunction), Translocation. and Mosaicism.

    Alycia Whaley
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Trisomy 21 is what everyone is familiar with. They have the extra 21st chromosome in every cell. In Translocation, that extra 21st chromosome clings onto a different chromosome, like the 14th maybe, onstead of chillin by itself like in Trisomy 21. So they have the normal 23 pairs, but they aren't all matched correctly. This tends to cause symptoms similar to Trisomy 21. In Mosaicism, some cells in the body have Trisomy 21, and some cells have the normal amount of correctly matched pairs of chromosomes. This is the lowest reported form of Downs due to the symptoms being less apparent.

Look I’m an American self aware enough to know we as a country just….but can we just-be happy for this person getting a citizenship they wanted in the country they wanted? It’s INCREDIBLY difficult to become a citizen in a new country so they didn’t do this for no reason, they chose the US for a reason, and they actually got to accomplish that hard goal. Yay, end of story, go OP.

Congrats - although, lately, I cannot understand why anyone would want to become an American citizen anymore. About half of the US has it head firmly up it's a**e and is no longer interested in those rights we talk about all the time. I mean there are several states where women might as well be cows because they cannot choose when they reproduce. But their rapists and abusers are protected... And for all of you who are saying if I don't like it leave...? Just waiting on my husband's passport...

I think most of these guys are the biggest suckers for little kids. The crew working on our street's drainage system were. One of my favorite memories with my little ones was watching them from our porch for a week and then allowing my three year old to climb all over the "uppy downs" ( backhoes in Teddy speak) once they finished for the day.

No, no, no! To any Russian pandas reading these posts - you have an amazing culture. You're also strong and determined, as evidenced by your dogged battles to preserve your country and your fellow citizens, in many wars. Many hearts are breaking for you and I truly believe that somehow, some way, you will be rid of that devil. And finally, please know that you are thought of and prayed for, along with your Ukrainian brothers and sisters.

I think "that" stands for the war, not for being russian. And i can understand, that He want to apologise for the stuff the dictator of His homeland is doing. Wouldn't you too? I feel sorry and shame and anger for some decisions the politicans of my homeland Do too. And did. I know it is not my fault but somehow i am Part of the german history because i am born here. My parents nor my grandparents did something evil, as far as i know, but we have the responsibility to remember and recognize Bad behaviors, try to stop them or at least Show, that we did not agree

As someone with a lot of sewing experience, I can definitely report that making clothes is HARD. Even more so when you're trying to make clothes that fit! Ask me to make you a custom plushie based on a design of your choice and I'll jump right in, but ask me to make you a shirt or a pair of pants and I'll tell you you'd be better off going to Kmart.

They are like donuts with vanilla cream filling. A bakery near the largest covid testing and vaccination facility had some that were sugar glazed with tiny spikey sugar balls on top that looked like the corona virus. They were filled with eggnog, and they stuck a syringe (without needle) also filled with eggnog in it. https://www.leadersn...impfkrapfen.jpg

I'm so happy they have a good food bank they can go to. One that gives you fresh fruit, milk and meat, Stuff you can actually make a meal with! If it was here, they'd have gotten some canned veggies, the mac & cheese, generic peanut butter, a box of generic cereal and maybe some noodles or dried beans.

Agreed, our lab doesn't like lights on in the evening in general, his bed is in the living room where we watch TV - and he is very particular about bed time. He will refuse to lay down in his dog bed until all the lights in the living room are off.

    I’m A Master

    I’m A Master

Completed my bachelor's and master’s in 19 months with two young kids. Got pregnant and had a third during this time. While working full-time as an RN during a pandemic. My maternity leave is over today and I head back to work tomorrow. For clarification - the school, western governors university, is a self-paced, competency-based school. If you know the material, you can essentially “test out” a class. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t without effort - but focus, determination, and paying out of pocket by term, not credit, were big motivators. My BSN took 10 months, and MSN took nine.

My great grandmother asked what size lemons and pulled out ones she had grown that were about four times the size of normal lemons!

My church used to collect cans to donate. I think the pull tabs went to make prosthetic limbs and the cans for wheelchairs or something. My grandad would do a daily walk, well into his 80s and collect as many cans as he could during them. It's one of my clearest memories, him describing how many cans he found this day or another. Unfortunately one day he tried to get one out of a gutter and fell over and grazed his face, but he didn't let that put him off!

Food was allowed in the library I worked at, except fish and chips because of grease (but really because the smell made us hungry).

Celebrating a war is not something that I expected here. I can't tell that this makes me feel like the world is less of a terrible place.

I don’t think this is celebrating war, I think this is celebrating Ukraine’s very impressive and unexpected fight against oppression

It's not like the pilot was just peacefully flying over Kyiv. Also He might have ejected.

I just did. Unfortunately, they're out of my reach at $1000+. But it's a great idea and if I had the money, I would certainly donate. The website says that they are not for sale, but given as a thank-you gift to anyone donating $1000 or more. They ship worldwide. GO UKRAINE!

The only thing I ask is why something like this wasn't done for other countries who were experiencing similar treatment? Why aren't ppl rallying behind them?

I assume you're thinking of the McDonald's Coffee lawsuit, which had nothing to do with the security of the cup and everything to do with how insanely overheated their coffee was, but which the McDonald's PR people spun into a story of a frivolous lawsuit brought against them by an idiot (who was in fact a blameless old woman who suffered horrific burns and only asked them to cover her medical bills, which they refused). Either way, you should really quit being such a Negative Nancy if you want to avoid being downvoted into oblivion.
