My answer is Mike Oldfield.
Most people really only think of him and his 1973 debut album Tubular Bells and maybe his 1983 single Moonlight Shadow. He is also an unbelievably talented guitar player but has never got on any of "The 50 Greatest Guitar players of all time"type lists despite being able to play any of them under the table.
