The newel and the newel post are different things. The newel is indeed the central supporting column for a helical staircase, while the newel posts are the terminal supports for the handrail at the top and bottom of the staircase.

Scabbard is for a sword, and only a sword, and would normally be rigid. Sheath is a much wider term, used for other things as well, but is what you would use for a knife, not a sword, usually would be less rigid, often a simple leather construction. When I was a kid in the Scouts we all wore a sheath-knife on our belts.
