This story about a wealthy person looking down on someone who isn’t as well-off as they are is a tale as old as time. Experts have even looked into these behaviors and found a connection between wealth and a lack of empathy.
Author and psychologist Dr. Steve Taylor, who also teaches at Leeds Beckett University, points to lower life satisfaction among people who become preoccupied with attaining financial success and eventually achieving it.
“Evidence suggests that wealthy people are unlikely to attain the contentment they seek through money alone. Their wealth and status don’t take away their sense of incompleteness,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, the opposite tends to happen with people who struggle financially. According to social psychologist Michael W. Kraus, lower-class individuals develop more empathy because their environment compels them to respond to vulnerabilities and social threats.
“You really need to depend on others so they will tell you if a social threat or opportunity is coming, and that makes you more perceptive of emotions,” Kraus told Time.
Healthy conversations about money can help prevent strained familial relationships
Money will always be a touchy subject. It is one of the conversation topics you won’t have on the dinner table out of courtesy, alongside politics and religion.
But if you must discuss finances among people you care about, the conversations must focus on the relationship above all. According to financial therapist Nathan Astle, it helps to begin the discussion by reminding the person why they matter.
And when it comes to helping out, Astle advises against offering a loan or a gift because it can create unhealthy power dynamics. Instead, he encourages providing workable solutions like helping the struggling loved one research possible resources or talking through their emotions.
But in the story’s case, a dialogue didn’t seem possible with the matriarch. Perhaps being uninvited to the wedding was a blessing in disguise for the author and their family, sparing them from the toxicity and drama.
