Artist In Louisville, Kentucky Installs Crochet Vulvas Throughout City, Sharing Facts About Violence Against Women
I’m Chelsea Mae & the creator of ({}) #VulvasOverLouisville ({}).
I learned to crochet from a neighbor during an ice storm in November of 2018 in Louisville, Kentucky that knocked out power in a lot of the city. I quickly mastered the basics because I began using crochet as a meditative escape from chronic pain in my lower back/hips.
In February of 2019, I launched ({}) #VulvasOverLouisville ({}).
Dick doodles are everywhere. I crochet cute vulvas & install them on street furniture with a laminated #VulvasOverLouisvile tag. I snap a photograph & share it on social media.
Every ({}) #VulvasOverLouisville ({}) post on Instagram & Facebook starts with a fact about violence against women & is followed by, “Art has the power to reach, transform, & inspire people to act. ({}) #VulvasOverLouisville ({}) is my tribute to all of the vulvas in Louisville, Kentucky’s past, present, & future as well as V-Day’s One Billion Rising movement. V-Day’s mission is to end violence against women & girls worldwide. You can’t end violence against women without looking at the intersections of poverty, racism, the environment, & war. Be bolder. Speak louder. This is the moment. Rise. Resist. Unite.”
I’ve personally experienced sexual assault as well as domestic violence more than a handful of times. So many people have reached out to me, shared their story, & connected with me on a deeply personal level.
#VulvasOverLouisville has been promoted by both V-Day & One Billion Rising on social media! The project was covered by Louisville Magazine in their May 2019 issue & online.
After learning that an abusive ex was tearing down my vulvas, I made a call for other craftivists to help me crochet even more of them to sprinkle around Louisville. The contributions are still coming in!

The 1st thought I had to crochet vulvas happened while I was stitching eyes as an ode to 1984’s “Big Brother is watching you.”
A month into learning crochet, I started creating vulvas.
The very 1st vulva that I installed in the wild was at The Nitty Gritty, a vintage clothing store & costume rental.
The largest vulva I’ve made is at Nachbar.
The Granny Vulva
Pubic Bulletin at The MerryWeather
Backpack patch for the woman who leads We Spoke Louisville, a women empowered bicycle group.
As I’ve mastered crochet, my vulvas have evolved.
