40 Unusual And Fascinating Maps That Might Teach You Something New About Our World (New Pics)
With so much information being thrown at us on a daily basis, it’s easy to lose focus and drift into apathy. Who cares about so many things at once, anyway?
No wonder more and more people are drawn to this old-time form of systematized information accompanied by great visualization. We’re talking maps. And not just dusty maps from your attic, but the most fascinating pieces that present things we know (and the ones we don’t!) in a refreshing light.
This subreddit has already earned its name as the ultimate destination for fans of cartography, so below we prepared a new batch of the most intriguing examples. After you’re done, be sure to check out more features of maps we did before here, here, and here.

There Is A Lake In Finland, That Looks Like Finland
In case you're wondering, because I looked it up immediately when I had learned about it: It's manmade, was made in 1991, is 116 meters long, and a 1:10,000 scale of Finland! The construction engineer was Esko Sääskilahti. It was going to be the Centerpoint of a tourist village, but that part was never completed. The lake took a week to excavate. Hope you enjoyed learning some more! :-)

Obesity Rates In The USA vs. Europe
No offense, but it looks like it might be stuffed
Load More Replies...so poverty and racism in the usa seems to correlate somewhat with obesity... interesting.
I'd add to that lack of preventive healthcare
Load More Replies...I am American and lived in the UK/Germany for half a year, can confirm their food is fresher, more locally grown, better quality and healthier overall than the options you see in a US store. Also, we didn’t have a car because wherever you live, there’s always a grocery store within walking distance, so you burn more calories to access your calories. And you could only bring home what food you could carry in bags, so you prioritized what you needed and didn’t have room for superfluous (junk food) items.
hehe.. switzerland is so low because food is too expensive and our national sports are hiking and cycling ;D
Never have I ever seen do many 70+ ppl hiking faster than me than in Switzerland😂 they're really fit
Load More Replies...If I remember correctly (documentary), the obesity epidemic in the United States began around the mid-20th century with the introduction of TV dinners. Frozen meals typically contain very high amounts of sugar, sodium, calories and fat, among other preservatives and additives while having low nutritional value. They became extremely popular during first wave feminism when more and more women were entering the labor force and families then lacked the ability to have home cooked meals every day (when I say "lacked", I mean it was Mommy's job to cook and nobody else would pick up the slack, demonstrating why feminism is needed). And with the advent and ubiquity of frozen meals came an explosion of frozen foods in general and hence, widespread obesity.
TV dinners also came along fairly soon after the creation of suburbs, which as mentioned earlier increased the need for cars and decreased walking. Less exercise + worse food = obesity.
Load More Replies...I dont know where you're based Hawkmoon but most American food isn't deemed fit for EU consumption; either from its ingredients or it's treatment of animals. For example some savoury food would have to be classed as a dessert in the EU due to its sugar content. *edit* spelling

Load More Replies...On a cross country trip I stopped at a Bob Evans in Indiana. The cover photo on the menu was a stack of pork, potatoes, some other meat, more potatoes covered in gravy. I found in the lower right corner inside the menu a chicken breast with rice. While waiting for my food I looked around and all the patrons were ENORMOUS. A family sat across from me with an ENORMOUS father, ENORMOUS mother and two ENORMOUS kids and they were stuffing their faces with piles of food. Quite a sight to see.
This is the ratio of overweight people for Turkey. Obesity is at 21.1%
In most of the world, being stout was lauded as a sign of prosperity and Turkey and numerous African countries it still is. The mannequins there are famous: fatman-639...74d7eb.jpg
obesity is 17% in France ( it should be in the grey 15-20%, not orange).
The US loves it's processed foods & preservatives. Food is sold as a product, not so much as nutrition. Your belly is full but you still feel lacking. Go to Europe & eat, not only do you feel full but you feel nourished.
I will also point out that the clinical definition of "obesity" varies across the world. Not to defend the US but to point out that cultural expectations do affect medical practice. So what's obese in one place is just "overweight but okay" in another, and vice versa. It's pretty interesting, as an MD, to see how this varies.
Lol the south in purple. Not our fault we cook damn good vittles.
