A Toy Story theory has been making the rounds, as some fans believe it might just have revealed the truth about Andy’s mother. Introduced in the 1996 first installment, Mrs. Davis has been an important recurring character in the popular animated franchise.
Instagrammer @asheleysspam, who frequently shares pop culture theories on the handle, shared a video in December last year speculating that Mrs. Davis might actually be the older version of another popular Pixar character.

In the video, the user theorized that Andy’s mom might be Riley Andersen from 2015’s Inside Out. Fans noticed that the theory held some weight since both characters have the same facial features, including fair hair and blue eyes.

Supporters of the theory also pointed to a childhood memory scene in Inside Out showing Riley going down a slide, which they said resembled a slide featured in Toy Story. However, this is hardly the first time a fan has come to this conclusion.

One Redditor shared a similar hypothesis in a 2015 post, stating, “No specific evidence, but they look very much the same in both.”
However, not all fans were on board with the idea. “This proved nothing and was a waste of time,” one fan commented.

Another fan made a detailed Reddit post, disproving the theory, noting that the two franchises’ timelines did not add up. The user pointed out that Andy’s room in Toy Story is filled with 90s technology, while Inside Out features modern technology like smartphones.
Others argued that the similarity in their appearance might be Pixar reusing assets to save some time and money. “Classic case of reusable assets,” one user commented.

In the past, fans have speculated the true identity of Mrs. Davis since the character’s actual name hasn’t been revealed. A prevalent theory among Disney fans was that Andy’s mother was Boo from Monsters, Inc.

Reddit user @Bloopyblob shared that the 2001 movie features a scene where Boo gives some of her toys to Sully and one of them is Jessie, the female cowgirl toy introduced in the second installment.

However, some viewers argued that the toy appearing in Monsters, Inc. was likely just an easter egg since “most Disney movies have at least 1 reference to another Disney movie.”

Some fans have also speculated that Andy’s mother is actually Emily, the original owner of Jessie. However, fans have debunked this theory since Jessie would likely have recognized her previous owner. They also pointed out that The Art of Toy Story revealed that Mrs. Davis’ name was supposed to be Jennifer and not Emily.

In a conversation with Empire magazine, Andrew Stanton, who helmed the upcoming installment, defended the decision to make another sequel.
He said, “Nobody’s being robbed of their trilogy. They can have that and never watch another if they don’t want to. But I’ve always loved how this world allows us to embrace time and change.”
Stanton co-wrote all the previous installments in the franchise and directed the fifth entry, which features the return of Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as the voices of Woody and Buzz Lightyear.
