Woman Reluctantly Accepts Her Future MIL’s Gift, But Then Her Wedding Plans Begin Falling Apart
It’s not uncommon to hear stories about family members causing wedding drama. One typical reason for tension is when the mother-in-law, for example, uses the supposed momentous celebration as an opportunity to assert control.
This story is no different. Here, the bride had to deal with her mother-in-law’s desire to dictate not only the wedding plans but also her personal life. And when that didn’t happen, all hell broke loose.
What hurt her more, however, was that her fiancé sided against her. With the wedding and fresh start she wanted now gone, she turned to Reddit and asked whether she did anything wrong.

Mother-in-law conflicts often arise from deeper-seated underlying issues
It’s easy to assume mother-in-law conflicts are surface-level. It’s also reasonable to think these rifts can be patched up over time.
However, most of these disputes have deeper-seated underlying issues. And according to licensed psychotherapist Dr. Akua Boateng, the emotions from a major milestone like a wedding can exacerbate these problems.
“Unmet dreams and failed expectations can be the source of conflict,” Dr. Boateng told Brides. “It is a parent’s attempt to navigate their relevance within the child’s life as they reckon with the potential loss of connection and dependence.”
In this story, the bride’s mother-in-law also interfered with her personal life and threatened to make it a living hell. According to marriage and family therapist Dr. Stephen Betchen, it could also be due to many reasons. One of the biggest ones is competition.
“As terrible as it may seem, some parents may have trouble with their children living a better life than they do. Usually, this struggle is unconscious—rarely will a parent admit this to themselves or others,” Dr. Betchen explained.
Validating a partner’s pain is necessary to help ease tensions and begin the path to making amends
Caught in the crossfire in this story is the author’s fiancé. And according to family therapist Dr. Tasha Seiter, most people in his place would choose not to step in to prevent further disharmony within the family.
However, Dr. Seiter says a person can side with their spouse without insulting their parents. In these cases, what matters most is making your partner feel seen and understood.
“Responding like this can help your partner feel safe in knowing that they have you on their team and they aren’t alone in their feelings,” Dr. Seiter explained.
In the story, however, the woman’s fiancé not only sided against her, but also insulted her in ways that may have brought up lifelong trauma. If anything, her partner showed how he would handle conflicts involving her mother-in-law, which wasn’t a good sign as they prepared to get married.
While ending the relationship was hurtful, the author may have dodged a bullet by not going through the marriage at all.
