Son Shares 8 Lessons His Dad Taught Him After Being Held Captive By The Gestapo For Resisting Nazis
The Norwegian resistance against the Nazi regime in Norway began in 1940, shortly after the beginning of World War II. Nazi Germany controlled Norway until the German capitulation in Europe at the beginning of May 1945. During the occupation, Norwegian resistance took several forms: the initial defense in Southern Norway, which allowed the government to escape capture, then – asserting the legitimacy of the exiled government, followed by organized military defense and counter-attacks. Finally, the armed resistance in the form of sabotage, commando raids, assassinations, and civil disobedience and unarmed resistance as well. Of course, those who joined the resistance were punished harshly. One of those people is the dad of Tor Ekeland – a lawyer based in Brooklyn, New York – who shared a captivating story about the lessons his father learned while being in the Norwegian Resistance and spending four days being held by the Gestapo.

“My dad was tortured by the Gestapo for 4 days and thrown in a concentration camp for being in the Norwegian Resistance. Growing up, he would tell me things he learned in the Resistance. I thought I’m never going to need this stuff,” Tor wrote on Twitter. He then went on to list eight lessons that his dad taught him: make it hard for your adversary to operate, take small acts, use your privilege and access if you’ve got it, do things right in the open, bide your time, operate in cells, be careful who you trust and finally – use the skills you already have to contribute. Tor’s Twitter post with dad’s advice soon went viral, with more than 70k people liking it and almost 37k retweeting the post.

Tor ended his viral thread with an ironic comment about the President, saying that “we don’t have a President who openly admires and coddles dictators while trashing our democratic allies.” We sure don’t…
Other people shared Nazi-related stories as well

A Twitter user Doug Horne also chimed into the discussion, mentioning a quote from a child survivor of Lidice, Czechoslovakia. Not that long time ago, Bored Panda wrote about the tragic destiny of the children in that village.

Good read, and I so did have his last point in mind for the entire read. Let's hope democracy works....
We can't just hope democracy works. We have to hold our leaders accountable. We have to vote and vote often. We have to protest.
Okay. But seriously, even if we think we've stopped the anti-democracy slide by getting rid of one person we'll only find that there are thousands waiting to take his place. Trump is a cull. A cull is an animal that is diseased and has to be removed from the herd so that it doesn't spread the disease. So you might think that getting rid of the one animal makes the herd safe. But, and this is important, the cull IS NOT THE DISEASE. It only carries the disease. Think about it. 10 years ago would you have said that 40% of your fellow citizens were so interested in their own side winning that they would be willing to throw democracy in the gutter to achieve it? 40%? Maybe 10%. Maybe 15%. But 40%? No matter what happens to Trump regarding impeachment or the 2020 election those 40% will always believe that they've somehow been cheated because the referees of the game were against their team. And that's far too large a portion of the population for democracy to live with.
You don't have a democracy. You have a Republic. Very different thing.
I'm writing all of this down. You never know what will happen in the furture.
Reread point six!
Especially in this day and age, in the United States. How many people, before 1933, would have guffawed at the idea that a totally evil dictator would take over Germany?

Keep these rules handy if the Democrats or Sanders wins.
Sergio: the worst thing you'll need to worry about if a progressive gets into power is ... hmmm... your healthcare would be covered... your jobs haven't been taken by the last hundred years of immigrants (if your job went overseas, blame Republican deregulation)... Oh, you might need a background check when you buy or sell guns.
In my mother's family, we know this. Anyone who says it can't happen to them... will either vanish or be the one making it happen. Through apathy or action.
