2020 has been a scary and exhausting year. However, there’s a silver lining. The Black Lives Matter protests demanding justice for Floyd George, racial equality, and an end to police brutality have spread and they’re bringing about real change in American society.
Twitter user Emma collected a list of examples of the change that the protests helped accelerate in the United States in a viral thread that got more than 309k likes and 188k retweets. New laws regulating law enforcement are being introduced and cities are planning to take down statues that some people view as racist.
While other Twitter users pitched in and posted positive changes that the protests helped introduce or made happen faster. Emma urged protestors to keep fighting for change and to not stop just because of a handful of small victories. Scroll down and take a look for yourselves, dear Pandas.

Ferguson is majority black population, isn't it? It's weird they haven't had a black mayor up until now
Well, let's see... white people have the money, the influence, the encouragement from Higher Ups in authority... Yeah, it's no surprise to me. Old White Dudes don't share power if they can help it.
Load More Replies...Michael Brown was not "unjustly murdered by the police". Get the facts straight.
Color and sex are important as symbols, but if she's just another spokesperson for the autocratic rich, little will change. I reviewed her campaign website, and it's pretty weak tea.
Better believe he's going to try and take credit for all the positive changes done while he's in office.
Load More Replies...I found this great site full of activist tactics to help with the strategy of this movement. It’s called Beautiful Trouble, though it made a newer version of the site in Beautiful Rising. So often we see “beauty” as being polite and graceful, rather than beautifully rebellious, strong and full of ironic humor. <3.
I noted that they did not include all the other graffiti that this inspired to be written on the street.
They misspelled "Black Lies Matter". Also, you can't just unilaterally rename streets and waste city resources in this manner.
This is way cool! Hope it's repainted when the paint starts to wear from traffic!
Well, it seems that BlackLivesMatterDC claims the following: "This is performative and a distraction from her active counter organizing to our demands to decrease the police budget and invest in the community. Black Lives Matter means Defund the police."
Oh, wow! Hope it works, really! Also, giving her name to such a law is a great way to honour her as well. Breonna was the "sleeping beauty" put to an eternal sleep not even the kiss of the truest love could wake up, as he probably cried her name, telling her to hang on. Breonna's life still matters, and will forever.
Jeff, the police officers broke into the wrong home, the suspect lived somewhere else. He shot first because he thought they were burglars and shot to scare them, for self-protection. Ultimately, the ones who killed someone needlessly are the officers. It's all a series of very unfortunate events that led to this tragic result that could have been avoided if only things were managed differently.
Load More Replies...I am so glad to hear this, but the cops that needlessly murdered Breonna are still walking free and have their full-time jobs. To all the people who are saying that the BlackLivesMatter movement is political and only fostering dissent,, please understand that it is a matter of HUMAN RIGHTS that people are are fighting for (and have been fighting for) all over the world. If we continue to stay silent and complacent this will continue to happen over and over again like it has done for years.
Good to hear that's in place even though I don't live in the US. It was completely unjustified and hope the family can find some peace.
This is fantastic! Hopefully this will help ensure that the awful crimes like those against George Floyd and Breonna Taylor will never happen again
I fully support the concept of changes made to equalize people of color with whitefolks, but I'm afraid that this will all go back to "normal" before too long.
I don't like that word "regulate." It's too ambiguous. Not strong enough. It sounds like a loophole that could be easy to weasel around. What they did to her should be banned, period! I can 't believe it was ever allowed in the first place. How did it ever get to be, that the public servants who are paid by us citizens (of all races) are allowed to "handle" us in this way? I'm sick of these aggressive police forces not "policing" their own and then screaming about how unappreciated they are. If they aren't going to do it others will have to.
But won't this give time for criminals to flush evidence down the toilet?
There have been many protests against police brutality in the US in the past. But the newest protests could be the tipping point that could lead to real change in the way that the police operate in the country.
Sean Collins writes on Vox that what lies at the core of the protests is the fear that black Americans have of being killed at any time by law enforcement. However, to change that requires reworking society. Collins states that previous protests have brought about limited change but demonstrators are hoping that this time will be different.
The reform in Camden, NJ was a huge success. They should be the example.
Reforming the police is good. However, law enforcement is necessary to still combat crime
I believe I heard Birmingham, Alabama is going to take down one (or two?) also.
Note they also deface war memorials included those of black regiments and early abolitionists.
noted you left out defacing memorials including those of black regiments and abolitionists.
Hope they go to museum or something. Can't just erase history and pretend it didn't happen.
They can go in the trash. Remember history with a textbook not a statue honor racists.
Load More Replies..."The south will rise again" specifically means the reemergence of a group of non-union states with economic and cultural structures dependent upon the systematic enslavement of black and brown people. It's not heroic, it's gross.
Load More Replies...Artur, these are symbols of black oppression, slavery, hatred, and systemic racism. Imagine how a person of colour must feel seeing those images every single day and being constantly reminded of how little they are valued in society. I understand that these statues are historical but for many they are symbols of hate and oppression. Many of these statues in both the US and the United Kingdom are being donated to museums so we don't forget about our past and these symbols of racial intolerance. If you think that the people who remove these statues are barbarians, you should ask what you think about the cops who murdered many innocent people of colour.
Load More Replies...The Mapping Police Violence advocacy group found that the vast majority, 99 percent, of police officers from 2013 to 2019 weren’t charged with a crime after they killed someone. The group also states that black Americans are 3 times more likely to be killed by police officers than someone who is white.
How long the current BLM protests will continue is anybody’s guess. There are small pockets of change happening right now. However, greater change requires sustained and focused action: society won’t change in just a few short weeks.
Had to google that one up: "Blood chokes (or carotid restraints / sleeper holds) are a form of strangulation that compress one or both carotid arteries and/or the jugular veins without compressing the airway, hence causing cerebral ischemia and a temporary hypoxic condition in the brain. A well applied blood choke may lead to unconsciousness in 10–20 seconds." Sounds like a good idea to stop choking people...
I would have thought this was not a usual police practice...wow
Load More Replies...I've never heard of a carotid restraint, but that sounds pretty brutal... Glad they got rid of it!
Cops can do whatever they want, apparently
Load More Replies...It's amazing that some committee even approved such a horrible thing in the first place.
Even if someone doesn't die, the brain damage is likely to be severe. It's shameful that this even existed. I totally understand that things have become more dangerous, even for police, but using that tactic is unforgivable!
A historic artifact like this is/was important, as it is a physical reminder of the atrocities that happened. Taking it away does nothing. I hope they put it in a museum, as it is a part of American history, as ugly as it is.
I think there is a difference between the statues we erect to honour people and the physical remains of the past. The slave block shouldn't automatically be treated in the same way as the statues, just because it is associated with slavery. Might have been turned into a meaningful memorial instead. (But then, I don't know the local issues in Fredericksburg).
I think it should go in a museum though so that people can learn about what happened. I don't think people need to walk by it every day, but I think forgetting the inhumanities of the past or white washing it ( as most plantation tours do) is terrible
"Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Many kids today have no clue what horrible things happened in the past and need to be educated.
Too right. So put the black history in the school-curriculum.
Load More Replies...Its not there incase white people want to start selling slaves again, itsa reminder of past s****y behavior.
That's disgusting that such a thing was kept, but good to see its taken away now
I can see this from both perspectives. It was not something glorifying the slave trade, more or less it was probably left as an educational item. We can distance ourselves from history when it's not out in the open. I would imagine that's why reminders like this still exists. With that being said, I do believe it would better serve in a museum. With it not being gated or closed off, I can assume that some family, somewhere, has a "vacation picture" with their kids standing on this. Just as there are plenty of distasteful pictures taken at Nazi concentration camps.
This made people remember what terrible things happened.Perhaps it should have stayed. it isn't a celebration it is a reminder.
I think this is amazing & wonderful! But as Truth Monster mentions, monuments of all kinds serve as reminders, both horrible and honorable. We mustn't allow our children to grow up ignorant of the horrors that have occurred, not only here in the US, but all over the world! There is disagreement over who said this, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." It is, however, most often attributed to George George Santayana.
I've always thought of the Confederate flag as anti-USA, more than pro-racism. Kind of weird that the US army would allow brandishing flags of its former enemy.
The confederate flag is a symbol of the oppression of black people in this country. It should not be displayed by anyone professing racial equality.
Load More Replies...I do not understand how it is allowed at all. No other country would allow the flag of a defeated country to fly on their land. Why do we? Yes, the confederate states declared themselves to be a country. They were defeated, that flag should not fly.
Supposedly, in Robert E Lee's said that NO ONE was to show up to his funeral in confederate uniform, as he still served in US military post-civil war.
Load More Replies...This flag should go. I'm in Alabama it is everywhere. My daughter graduated from high school a few years ago and part of their logo as The West Morgan rebels is That f lag. Time for change.
People might get demotivated and the protests might fizzle out if there aren’t larger victories against police brutality. We’ll see in the upcoming months whether these protests will have a bigger effect on the US than the ones that came before them.
WHAT?! No one knew that the Old men in government are racist and backwards thinking? HOLY S**t!
Aboringines have reported being victims of racist events for the longest. How were people surprised?
Change the release to "within 12 hours". Fourteen days is enough time to cover up a lot. ---- from Charlottesville, VA. Yeah. Where we had that 2017 nightmare thing.
I agree and also change it to unedited camera footage with independent verification that the digital signature is uninterrupted and unedited
Load More Replies...I took it to mean "release to the public" in 14 days, which isn't that bad. What should be included in this law is a statement that all bodycam results MUST be put in an inaccessible place and only accessed by more than one person at a time, to reduce the likelihood of tampering.
So a cop who is recorded doing something harmful to public but does not plead guilty will continue as nothing happened?
Doesn't say that. I'm sure such a felon would be tried in court? And if it ends up with a guilty verdict, the same result ensues as if they pleaded guilty in the first place. I read it like "pleading guilty does not save your a*s".
Load More Replies...I have long been speaking out against QI. Not only would this hold police legally accountable, it will also hold them financially accountable and allow them to be sued in civil court and have to pay the damages themselves. It will also hold prosecutors accountable for misconduct.
I wonder if there'll be a lot of turnover in police departments when they can no longer get away with everydamnthing.
These men would have never been arrested without the political and social media pressure
Without the video to prove it, they never would have been arrested.
Load More Replies...It's sad that it took this long to bring these monsters to justice...
This is such a weird case (according to Wikipedia). Arbery got shot after what seems neighbourhood vigilantes wanted to investigate if he was doing burglary. And the entire thing was caught on video. The video went viral. And yet there seems to have been some (quite a lot) of confusion whether or not to even go to trial.
Ed, I'm not sure if the confusion is about "whether" to try them, but more about "where" to try them. As I understand it, one of the shooters was an investigator with the District Attorney's office (although I think he's now retired). But a lot of the judges and other court officials knew him and so had to recuse themselves from the case. It then took some time to find a place to try him where there would not be a conflict of interest.
Load More Replies...Thank God for social media in this case. Just like almost everything else, including gossip, social media, and politicians, can be equally "good" and/bad.
Been watching some videos from Savantics lately on social issues, and turns out there’s a massive true crime fanbase that seems to romanticize serial killers and monsters like this as handsome. Ick. Why are bad boys so liked? They’re just abusers. Nice to know there are sane people out there online keeping up the pressure.
Please, please, please support your local bookstores and libraries instead of supporting large "mega-companies" like Amazon. You can even do a quick online search to see if there are any black-owned bookstores in your area that you can help support. Many of these black-owned bookstores have created entire "recommended" reading lists on their websites that include books on ending racism and a wide range of books of all different genres by authors of colour.
Glad Amazon is out of these books, but I totally agree with "Loki's Lil Butter Knife" when it comes to supporting libraries and local bookstores (if any still exist where you live).
Also, at Amazon music, a Johnny Horton song, "I hate N(word) is gone, I think
Yeah, well why did I get paid 10 when my white coworkers made $16 an hour? I had more education, responsibility and the only one not white? They told me it was because I was resentful when one of them stole my resume to get promoted that I didn't get paid the same.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately a bit of a pioneer. But at least we're getting there.
Load More Replies...Mental health screening isn't a bad thing, but if someone truly believes their thinking is correct, it may not help. The important thing is to start teaching our babies & toddlers to accept all people. After age 5 personality traits are almost impossible to change!
As a mental heath professional I think it's imperative to screen police candidates for psychopathy...I believe their current screening tools are far too lax
Want to hear some irony. When John Brown launched his raid on Harpers Ferry to seize the federal arsenal to launch his slave rebellion, the two men dispatched to stop him were Robert E Lee and JEB Stuart. Brown was executed for his rebellion. Neither Lee or Stuart were executed for treason for their role in leading insurrectionist Confederate troops though. My guess is the difference is the cause. Brown fought and died to try to end slavery. Lee and Stuart fought to protect it
Lee and Stuart and their ilk were, ultimately, traitors. I agree. It's ridiculous to see them as heroes of the UNITED States. No. THey are heroes of the defunct and over-glorified Confederate States, which wanted nothing to do with being part of the USA. That flag should be *history*, as in forgotten except in books.
Load More Replies...Nothing should be used on protestors. If they become violent, they are no longer protestors but instead they are rioters. There is a huge difference. One is protected by the constitution and the latter is not.
With the exception of the unlawful blocking of certain throughfares to avoid essential services like ambulances from getting to the hospital, I agree with you, Mama Panda.
Load More Replies...Yes, but we have seen in the UK agitators move in amongst quiet protestors, then you end up with a 'riot'
The German military implemented a similar thing after WWII. If given an order you know is morally wrong, your duty is to disobey.
Why do they need a written directive to intervene? Why don't they just intervene because it is the right thing to do?
two of the three were brand new on the job and one of them who was black was trying to tell Chauvin to turn Flloyd over. Anyone new at any job is supposed to just keep your eyes open and mouth shut.
Load More Replies...There are two points that bother me in this NPR tweet. What will the definition be of "excessive force," and that point about how it's unclear what type of action offending officers will face. If it's up to fellow officers who may be just as racist, this will be a problem!
And this is why bureaucrats are the worst. Need a directive to intervene...-grumbles-
There should also be penalties for those cameras that just "happen" to malfunction or be turned off at pivotal moments!!
It doesn't matter if they have the ability to shut them off, which happens regularly.
All body camera that will "malfunction" at just the right time.
dear Russian Otaku: you need to read before you write! All people matter, and blacks (to name one group) have not seen anywhere near an equal level of respect in the world. Educate yourself! You don't need to agree with BLM to understand why they have felt the need for recognition.
Suppose it is good that it is actually there but it can only be read from the air, or maybe from some of you tall buildings.
They always do these 'investigations' then nothing comes of it. The UK still exports anti-riot gear to blood-drenched dictatorships around the world.
And is a major arms dealer, especially to the Saudi's *angry emoji*
Load More Replies...Some anti-riot gear is good. I saw a wonderful picture from the UK, in which officers surrounded an armed and desperate man with just riot shields and kept moving closer until he was entirely boxed in. No one was hurt and the man was sent to a psychiatric facility for evaluation. There was a corresponding picture of how the same situation would be handled here in the US. The comparison was shameful.
I tried to verify this on Snopes.com but was unable to find anything. If this is true, good for Bold Beauty Inc.!!
Why was there a confederate memorial in a Northern State to begin with? I would assume its likely built in the 1920s when the Klan became popular again in the face of immigration and Blacks demanding rights post WWI but still.
Hi, I am from Indy and I can explain. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the Circle (the reason why we are called The Circle City) does not honor Confederate Soldiers. Way back when a group of city "leaders" that were heavily involved in the KKK wanted the confederate soldiers that were "falsely imprisoned" at the Union prison camp near Indianapolis added to the Grand Monument. They could not get it done so they built their own monument and placed it in a park just south of Indianapolis. Later, I think in the 1920's, another group of "leaders" wanted the monument moved to the Circle so they tried again and again were unsuccessful. Instead, they settled for it being moved to another park inside the City limits. Now it is coming down and we are all very happy about that.
Load More Replies...There are 3 stages of Klan development. The 1st Klan was the post-Civil War Southern veterans' group. The 2nd Klan was founded in Indiana in the early 1900s, mostly as a rsponse to immigrants and non-protestant Christians. The 3rd Klan arose during the Civil Rights Era in the 1950s. That has splintered off into the myriad groups now under the umbrella of white nationalist/supremacy.
Load More Replies...None of the prison camps were day spas. The Confederates were wrong and/or misguided by leadership, but there is not necessarily dishonor in remembering men who died in such places. Just like soldiers in all wars, too few know why they're REALLY fighting; they're just following what they've been lied to about. Remember Vietnam and the still-ongoing war in the Middle East as examples.
Wow. All the dead from INdiana who fought for the UNITED States, and the POWs got the statue? Yeesh.
I don't think a column with a list of names is art.
Load More Replies...No one is using bayonets or grenade launchers. The military would love to be able to use bayonets agian. The reason your police depts are like para militaries is because of whack job right wing Christian extremists having military hardware
The right wing uses all sorts of strange hypocritical and twisted metaphors to justify their actions. A simple WWJD basically nullifies all of their ideas about how the world should be run, yet they claim Christianity as their backing. it makes no sense.
Load More Replies...In my opinion, there should be MASSIVE gun laws supporting access to anything except "real" hunting guns. No handguns, no semi or fully automatic guns, no grenade launchers, no shoulder-mounted rocket launchers. None of those guns are needed for hunting for your family's food.
The fact that cops, who are supposed to protect American citizens, even have access to these types of weapons really breaks my heart. Were they planning to go to war with Americans?
I am glad that they are reviewing the policy. The officer that made the comment about Dreasjon Reed needing a closed casket has been fired - and rightfully so, but I am not convinced that excessive force was used in his case.
Yeah, so on the off chance there's something like a school shooter, it's gonna take longer for help to arrive. My school had at least one cop on the school grounds and it was actually better, not worse. He was also unbiased af which was nice
But what an amazingly f****d up country to need police in schools. In the UK, such an idea would shock the nation.
Load More Replies...I have a close relative who is a cop and a coach. He has always helped kids and wants to be assigned to a school (middle or high). In the town he works the school officers don't just make sure everyone is safe but, they counsel, educate, and help change negative feelings and attitudes about the Police. He works for a very good department and this kind of program is important if it has the right officers and administration.
The existing police department was deemed to have very deep-rooted problems. The only way to eliminate those structural issues was to lay everyone off and start over.
Load More Replies...I would like traffic cops to only pull people over if they are an active hazard, like weaving, speeding, and wrecks. Too many police officers are pulling people over for "license plate lights" or "Slightly tinted windows." Such regulations are only the justification for officers to get nosey for bigger offenses, and they put both the officer and the motor vehicle driver into an unneccessary risk situation.
I cant grasp the concept of blaming criminal behavior on poverty. To say a people arent capable of behaving as adults, because they dont have everything they want is basically saying that group has a childish mindset and is incapable of being trusted with adulthood
The majority of career criminals start as teenagers who are NOT capable of being trusted with adult responsibilities. There are lots of reasons to turn to crime, but prestige and cash are big factors for angry youngsters who have few legitimate avenues of access. There certainly is not a 1:1 correlation between crime and poverty. There is a stronger correlation between wealth disparity and crime. But it cannot be ignored as a contributing factor.
Load More Replies...I've subbed in rough urban schools. Liberals, trust me, not having cops in those schools is a really, really, really f***ing stupid idea.
It's funny. In other countries, we don't have police in schools at all. Well - maybe for "show and tell" or some special lectures about rape and something important that a police-officer would be able to get across better than a teacher. OR in some cases when there is need for police to come pick someone up (my brother works in a problem-district as a teacher - they do sometimes have to involve the police for theft, for parents being threatening or abusive or for fights and maybe drugs? (not sure) ). Don't really know why anyone would think it won't work in the US.
Load More Replies...I would love to see the crime data on Portland public schools a year from now to see if this is, in fact, a good idea. I don't think it is a good idea but time will tell. I just foresee the school crime rates increasing instead of decreasing.
Right you are Mama Panda - look, I know the political right has on it's side a lot of really stupid ideas ('Evolution is false! The Earth is 6,000 years old! We can 'cure' gayness with prayers!') But this is one of those times where the political left also has some really stupid ideas. Do people calling for this not realize, not get the basic fact that if public schools had brought in cops there were obviously reasons for that? Does it not occur to them that the police were obviously brought to many public schools b/c in those schools there were situations that badly needed a police presence? I guarantee you the white liberals calling for this have never subbed or otherwise taught or worked in a rough urban public school, which I have done. Spend some time in those schools white liberals, then tell me how unnecessary the police presence is before you go back to your lattes and your tweeting and sign holding.
Load More Replies...BLM got most police officers to wear cameras (needed). That alone is changing the nature of policing and shining a light on policies/procedures that need to change. Inversely, It is also protecting police from false allegations, which is also good.
Censuring art is a dangerous road. If the local populace thinks its horrendous/in bad taste/ want a gigantic statue of a Waffle Cat, then they should vote on it. Destroying historic art, even ones no longer in fashion, should be put in a museum or park for posterity. Not to glorify the Confederacy, but because they are priceless works of art and ingenuity. Make a national museum of Retired Statuary and have placards explaining why they were removed and when and by who.
These are all good news. Hopefully the so called "American Dream" will no longer be just a dream. Does anyone else find it bizarre that every inch towards decency and basic equality for all people has to be fought for with tooth and nail? It has to be a flaw in humans themselves. Because it is apex of stupidity to treat any person differently merely due to color.
I'm glad to see that slowly, but surely, protests are working. This seems like a really positive step in the right direction. I just wish that the mainstream media would pay more attention to these great happenings and the amazing people responsible for them rather than the violent anarchists out just to watch the world burn. It's attention that they want, and the do not deserve it. All this does.
I think all of these actions are good but I would suggest to make a museum dedicated to this kind of monuments and also to find ways to stop gun violence especially in schools
