This is a perfect example of a non-time related object representing time in an abstract way. There’s nothing about a clipboard that has anything to do with time. But the dedication and steady routine of working on a daily crossword puzzle for 30 years has left the clipboard with a patina of newsprint ink that slowly built up over three decades.

Something like this happens in old lead pipes. So if you live in an old house and have lead pipes, you should have them replaced, but as long as they aren’t disturbed, the calcification that’s built up on the interior of the pipe acts as a barrier between the water flowing and the lead, so the pipe isn’t as immediately dangerous as a lot of people think.
