Renowned New York-based photographer, Donna Stevens has created a brand-new photo series: The New Feminist. This series shines a spotlight on those men who are joining, in what has now been, a 170-year fight for gender equality.

Stevens believes that for too long, the word feminism has been a relatively exclusive term, defined by archival images of burning bras and anti-male sentiments. However, feminism is simply the belief that men and women should have equal rights.

Three things motivated Stevens to make this series: US politics, her two young sons and reading the definition of feminism in the Webster dictionary. With this US presidential election just days away, Stevens also pondered the fact that the US may have a female president soon – chosen in an election that has shown just how much gender matters in this world today.

Stevens heard many of the men in her series comparing their own struggles with race and gay rights to the fight for women’s equality.

Stevens wants people to change the way they think about the word ‘Feminism’. The feminists in today’s world (at least, the ones in an opportunistic position to change things) are men – men who believe women should have the same liberties that they do.
