The [Not-So] Convenience store is based on the insight that our culture of convenience is the culprit behind the massive waste problem the world faces. From food delivery services with copious amounts of takeaway containers, plastic straws, cling wrap, excessive packaging, to bad habits like throwing out perfectly good electronics and hoarding food in our fridge till it goes bad, we’re too used to taking the easy, convenient way out.

The exhibition is set up to simulate a typical convenience store, but the products on offer are sustainable alternatives which will require more effort on the consumer: whether it’s about making conscious consumer decisions, changing ingrained habits or going out of their way to be less wasteful.

Globally, the volume of waste exceeds 2 billion tons every year. In Singapore, we generated over 7.7 million tons of waste in 2017 alone, enough to fill 15,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Sadly, only 21% of this waste is recycled—most end up incinerated, contributing to global warming and climate change.
