Artist Repurposes Historic Escalator To Create A Mind-Bending Installation That Feels Like A Dream
Australia is known for weird wildlife and poisonous snakes, but nothing of the architecture (except the Opera house). This new installation wants to put the continent/country in the surreal building’s books of the most traveling photographers.
Wynyard station installation (Sydney) which looks like it was cropped out from “Inception” and dumbed at the heart of the commercial capital of Australia is conquering the hearts of Sydney citizens and city’s visitors.
Titled the “Interloop” and weighing more than 5 tons, this ceiling sculpture was made from the parts of the old wooden escalator on the site, before it was removed to make way for more modern steel replacement. Designed by University of Sydney professor of architecture Chris Fox, it is supposed to represent an interaction between the new and old.

Different & interesting. I , also, like incorporating, rather than trashing, parts of the old escalator , into modern art !

I just had to Google it and looks like there can be strong earthquakes at Australia also so it is probably good idea to avoid that artwork when the earth starts to shake.

I like the fact that they show some pictures that give us an idea of how it was done. The ability to imagine such a thing and to make it happen is amazing. I think I would get dizzy and nauseated if I ever saw it person, however.

a great way of making an old trash into a piece of art. this will be nostalgic for those people who used it before.

They're not trash, though... up until last year they were still in regular use but the decision was made to upgrade to metal escalators. They were the last wooden escalators still in use at that point and it was very sad when they ripped them out. It was a great novelty to ride on them when I visited Sydney. But I'm glad they weren't disposed of.

What the heck!!! I hate it!!! One of my worst nightmares as a child was been trapped by one of these old escalators, and this one looks like a demon coming back for me after so many years!!! :-S

I always thought escalators were scary for some reason. Not riding one, but HOW it works, internally. This photo series has completely blown away how I thought an escalator looked, when disassembled. Now I am more confused than ever though-- how did he get those parts to 'bend' like that?! I don't see any seams where it bends..... this is great art! I love it!

The sculpture is made from just the upper surface of the "steps" - the twisty metal structure they are mounted on is built new for this project. It's a very cool art piece but it doesn't show you how an escalator works, and that's not the point :p.
