One dad spilled the tea about how he got revenge on a narcissistic driver who stole a parking spot meant for families. After listening to the man’s excuses about leaving his supposed kids in the car in the heat, the dad used those same words to get him in trouble. Staying calm and cool is a great way to counter narcissists’ attempts to manipulate you

The bad news is that the world is full of narcissists. The good news is that, as unpleasant and manipulative as they are, you are not powerless to deal with them. Well, as long as you’re assertive and confident in how you communicate and protect your boundaries. That’s easier said than done, of course.

In a nutshell, you may want to stick to using neutral phrases when talking with a narcissist so that you disarm them, prevent the argument from escalating, and avoid impulsive reactions. That way, you can reduce the risk of them manipulating you, and you can focus on the facts instead of all the drama. In short, focus on brief and to-the-point interactions.

As Verywell Mind explains, some examples of neutral phrases include the following:

    • That doesn’t work for me
    • I will only have a conversation with you about this if you’re willing to listen and try to understand my perspective
    • I’m not going to explain why this is important to me, but it is
    • If you continue to speak to me like that, I will walk away
    • I’m not willing to talk about that
    • I’m going to step away from this conversation
    • I can understand how you feel, but I feel differently
    • I don’t see myself that way
    • I remember it differently

You have to know how to pick your battles. There are times when you must stand up for yourself and when it’s best to step back

Essentially, when you remain calm, cool, and collected, you discourage narcissists from provoking you into conflict. In short, you put a stop to their attempts to manipulate you.

“Narcissists often try to provoke emotional reactions to gain a sense of control over others. They may resort to manipulation, lies, or personal attacks to get a rise out of you,” Verywell Mind explains.

Meanwhile, Healthline urges that, no matter what, you should advocate for yourself. Sure, you have to pick your battles, and sometimes, it’s healthier to simply walk away from a confrontation. But other times, when someone ignores your boundaries, you must speak up.

That being said, you have to stand up for yourself calmly and gently. “Tell them how their words and conduct impact your life. Be specific about what’s unacceptable and how you expect to be treated, but prepare yourself for the fact that it may be challenging for them to understand or empathize with your feelings.”

Narcissists are often great at making promises, but they don’t follow through. So, you have to be very clear about what you need or expect from them.

Once you’ve finished reading the story and other people’s reactions to it, share your own perspective in the comments. What do you think of the dad’s revenge against the lying driver? What do you think you would have done if you were in his shoes? What’s the most irritating parking thief you’ve had to deal with? Who is the biggest narcissist in your life? Tell us all about it.
