“KOLOVOROT” is a polyptych made using the textile collage technique. Master’s degree project of the artist Lidia Gordeenco (www.instagram.com/lidiagordeenco) from St. Petersburg.
The image of the Slavic solar symbol of the eternal rotation of the Universe was chosen as the title theme for the work in the material. The “Kolovorot” blades are panels, each of which is inspired by a traditional Russian female headdress. Each canvas symbolizes one of the stages of a woman’s life cycle through an appeal to the corresponding chronological headdress. The traditional Russian female headdress completed the costume complex and symbolized the heavenly kingdom, space.
This headdress accompanied girls from childhood, from girlhood and transformed as he grew up and acquired a new status of the owner. Thus, the four parts of the panel are inspired by different headdresses: a braid – a girl’s adornment that was attached to a braid; a crown – a festive headdress worn by the bride; kokoshnik – as a headdress symbolizing a new married life; a scarf as an obligatory element of burial vestments.
The center of the composition depicts the motive of the celestial body – the Moon, which in Slavic culture personifies the feminine principle. The appearance and disappearance of the lunar disk as an expressive cosmic image of earthly cycles in the animal and plant worlds.
