Guy Insults Canada, But This Girl Defends It With Some Truth Bombs That Get Over 1M Likes And Retweets
Canada is awesome. I know it. You know it. But one internet user obviously didn’t because he started insulting it. Twitter user fredsonora called Canadians moose-fornicators and even insulted their ham and curling! Those were some very low blows.
Luckily, Twitter user Sharlene, who goes by the moniker sfergs_, was there to step in to defend Canada. And she did this by explaining why it is one of the best countries in the world. The spat on Twitter occurred after Sharlene exclaimed that she was incredibly glad that her parents emigrated to Canada instead of the United States; fredsonora didn’t like that one bit, so he proceeded to verbally attack Canada.
Now, before proceeding any further, I’d like to say that I like Canada and the United States equally: I appreciate the former’s well-mannered people and stunning frigid landscape, and the latter’s passion for innovation and incredible national parks. Both countries have their pros and cons. However, emotions can get a bit heated where nationalities are concerned, and this ‘feud’ on Twitter is a perfect example of this.

Sharlene was on the warpath when she listed what she thinks are the reasons Canada is ‘better’ than the US. The Twitter user highlighted that one of the biggest positives the country has is free healthcare which she contrasted with the situation in the US.

However, the woman mentioned that Canada is far from perfect and she noted that her goal wasn’t to make Americans feel bad. Sharlene’s thread was wildly successful, getting more than 831,000 likes and being retweeted over 185,000 times.
Naturally, Canada is well known for its moose, ham, and curling, but that’s not all. The Top Tens writes that Canada is best known for several other things, chief among them being maple syrup, the Niagara Falls, and the tendency for Canadians to use the word ‘eh?’
Canada is also known as one of the safest countries in the world and the second-largest country in the world by area. And what is that area populated by? Incredibly friendly folks who are amazing at curling.

Medical care is not technically free. Nothing is free. Where does she think the money is coming from, thin air? It's called taxes and Canadians are taxed at a much higher rate than Americans...I have to agree about medication though. It really shouldnt be so expensive
Europeans are also taxed at higher rates. When my parents sat down with mom's American cousins to compare what they got for their money, the American relatives turned from outrage at the thought of my parents being allowed to keep so little of the earnings to disbelief at how it was possible that so much was covered. Healthcare in the USA is more expensive than anywhere else in the world. To me, it means that some sectors in America reap oversized profits, and that a lot of people are ruined financially or even die before their time because of it. I honestly do not understand why Americans accept this.
Because yes
Yes other countries pay higher taxes, so what? We don't end up with a 1.2m dollar medical bill.
Of course nothing is "free", but the taxation in the UK is not as massively different as you think. Anyone in the UK who earns up to about US$57,000 each year pays a basic rate of income tax at 20% from their salary- and the first US$17,000 of that is exempted altogether. True, most consumer goods have a general sales tax of 20% VAT. Some other commodities have specific taxes (e.g. petrol tax is one of the most expensive at roughly $2 per US Gallon). But at the end of the day all that taxation pays for a true "welfare" state. A system that provides universal healthcare system in which every single citizen can have their most complex health needs met according to their NEED, not their ability to pay.
It's NOT "taxes", health care is a separate line item on payroll deductions. It has NOTHING to do with Revenue Canada. When we moved to the States in 2000, we ran the numbers on taxes. By the time you add federal, state, city, and sales taxes, the numbers were IDENTICAL. When you add the cost of health care at $3000.00 per month, it was almost double. ...///... We are not a low income household. ...///... If we moved back to Canada tomorrow, we would be paying $135.00 a month for TWO PEOPLE for full health care coverage. No copays, no getting permission for treatment, no "in" and "out" of network garbage, no one asks for a nickel above your health insurance payments.
Yeah thats a load of crap on the taxes. Its not identical. Unless you are making $250K or more in the States, then the tax rate in the States is much lower.
Those higher taxes Are still cheaper than healt insurance in America. And your insurance doesn't cover everything, not from far... If you add free college, paid maternity leave And paid medical leave, those high taxes Are actually cheap as f**k, comparing how much these things cost you in America. And canadians Are not forced to leave their newborn babies in care of strangers, to being able to afford having them in the first place. But sure, go enjoy your lover taxes...
This "it's not really free" thing is not as clever as you think it is. Canadians are not taxed at a much higher rate. (I have been taxed in both countries for the same job, same salary, during different years.) Our healthcare is far, far cheaper because its more efficient, and the cost is distributed across all of society instead of being paid for by individuals and employers. If Canada collectively spent as much per capita on health care as the US, we'd each have a personal GP. (Exaggerating! But not by much.)
your answer was not as clever as you thought
My insurance costs about $8-10K a year, on top of that, there's a $500 deductible, plus copays of at least $20 every time I see a doctor, usually more. Plus medications that insurance covers only some of, which put me out of pocket about $100 or more a month. And if I dare get cancer, I will easily be out of pocket tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, or more. I doubt my taxes would go up enough to equal that.
While Canada is pretty amazing, it is not without it's serious faults. As with any country. That being said I could name at least 10 countries I would move to before the states.
Serious faults of Canada: Prime Minister who doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground (broken/unfulfilled electoral promises, lack of transparency, Liberal Party dissension, cultural appropriation...); Open door immigration policy (which is causing a widespread loss of Canadian identity); Public Healthcare ("free" healthcare does not exist - we pay for it with higher taxes. Often times those who require life saving surgeries/treatments are left waiting for months or years due to overcrowding at hospitals, lack of medical professionals, etc.); Electoral system - our method of indirect voting is ineffective. We are essentially required to vote for our local Member of Parliament in order to elect a new Prime Minister (but what if you can't stand your local MLA? Tough shit.); CENSORSHIP - Under Trudeau's regime we have seen the integration of "Hate Speech" laws, as well as gender identification laws, which effectively limit our right to free speech and thought... I could go on & on.
Please note that I am not saying I am for hateful/racist/phobic speech, however I completely support every person's RIGHT to free speech & thought. Once that starts to be eliminated, we begin to enter a very Communist type regime (where you are told what to think & say). Even the UN Declaration of Human Rights declares: "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers".
Of course! As a Canadian I have to agree with quite a bit of that. We’re not perfect, but we acknowledge where this country has f****d up in the past and present and many of us try to help change that. That being said, again I say we’re not perfect. Still better than America and their plastic cheese that decreases your life span xD

Well it takes two seconds to figure out what party your voting for. Is it possible your opinion is biased? I personally dismiss anyone's political opinions if they are hard on either side of the spectrum.

Oh, you're a racist. And one who says, "I'm not a racist". You clearly are. Clearly. Everyone DOES have a right to say whatever the fuck they want, what they DON'T have a right to is to say it without consequence. And the consequence of your shitty racist rant is that people will call you a racist. And you're a giant liar. LIFE SAVING PROCEDURES DON'T WAIT WEEKS AND MONTHS. You're spouting American talking points. Go fucking move there already.

You have the right to any opinion. You don't have the right to spit it into people's faces. Not that difficult.

Yeah you seem like a real fun person to discuss anything with.
Hi.... dual citizen here. Most of the tweets contain half truths. Just sayin...
Yes, this seems like the sort of person I call "faux woke," who has read a bunch of scare news that's skewed to generate a click, then further skewed it herself to make a point. Is it worth making ACTUAL issues look like fairy tales, just so you can get Twitter points? "Hahahah you all suck" is not a productive argument.

Healthcare isn't "FREE", it's paid for with our higher sales tax, and I'm okay with this, as a U.S. citizen with Canadian permanent residency, and having been on both sides.
How come when someone disagrees with what someone’s says they say cite your sources. But if it’s something they agree with like that twitter post they don’t ask any questions
Free healthcare. Whether you agree or disagree with universal healthcare, it’s not free. $50k student loans at 18. I don’t know any 18 year olds who have accrued that amount in student loans at 18. It just doesn’t do her argument any favor if she is going to state facts.
get used to not getting what you want
