You can never know what goes on in another person’s head, and misreading people can often lead to heartbreak in relationships. One partner might think they’re in the perfect relationship while the other is on a completely different page. One study has found that one in four people keep secrets from their romantic partner, and some secrets might make or break a relationship.
This woman was blindsided by the things her boyfriend of five years was hiding from her. While she imagined he was her best friend and dreamed of getting married, he was on a completely different page. Although he kept telling her he wanted the same things, in his heart, he was doing it only because of his people-pleasing tendencies. So, when he finally came clean one evening, the woman found out their relationship wasn’t as perfect and rock solid as she’d imagined.
A guy shocked his girlfriend of five years after revealing he had doubts about their relationship
She thought it was “perfect” and “rock solid,” and was even contemplating marriage
Relationships where the male partner is less committed than the female partner are more likely to end in a break-up
To say that relationships are complicated would be an understatement. People bring their past experiences, traumas, and other issues to a romantic relationship, and navigating through them together is the real challenge.
When you’re in a relationship, especially at the one of the biggest sources of anxiety, especially at the start, is whether the other person feels the same. However, research finds that many couples are committed to their relationships differently. A 2016 study found that in 22.8% of asymmetrically committed relationships, male partners are less committed than their female partner, and in 12.4%, the female partner is less committed.
Interestingly, this affected whether the couple stayed together. When the woman was the “weak link” in the relationship, the couple had a 54% higher chance of breaking up within two years. When a man was the less committed one in a relationship, only 29% of relationships tended to end within two years.
But was it a lack of commitment that made this boyfriend freak out? In this story, the relationship’s undoing might’ve been the boyfriend’s people-pleasing tendencies and a knack for conflict avoidance. The boyfriend told his girlfriend what she wanted to hear: that they were happy, that he was thinking about marriage, that he envisioned a future together. In reality, he didn’t think or feel those things, but why did he then lie to his partner — his best friend?
People pleasers put other people’s needs above their own, but that often backfires in romantic relationships. It might be beneficial at work or at dinner parties, but a romantic partner expects honesty and truth. Psychotherapist Myron Nelson, LCPC, calls people-pleasing a misguided lie. “It’s assuming you know what other people want and lying by omission or directly lying.”
People-pleasers might think their behavior is just a few white lies, but Nelson notes that it’s how they mislead the people they care about and keep loved ones from truly knowing them.
Once one partner goes into a silent “terminal phase” of the relationship, it’s doomed
Is there such a thing as a perfect relationship? As some commenters noted, love sometimes makes us see life through rose-colored glasses, ignore warning signs, and gives us the illusion of a “rock-solid” relationship. This couple clearly had communication issues, so how did the girlfriend get under the illusion that everything was perfect?
When we’re happy, we might not see our life and relationship clearly. In fact, even if there are red flags in our relationship, we’re often biased and don’t believe a breakup is imminent until after the fact. At least that’s what a team of researchers found in 2023. They uncovered that we act like we “knew” a relationship wasn’t going to last only in hindsight, once we know the bigger picture.
Realistically, relationships don’t end suddenly. One partner starts feeling less and less involved in the relationship without telling the other, but it happens gradually. A 2025 study by Dr. Janina Bühler and Dr. Ulrich Orth found that the decline starts around year one or two into the relationship.
One partner enters the “terminal phase” of the relationship, which can last anywhere from 7 to 28 months, but from that point on, the relationship is doomed. “Initiating measures in the preterminal phase of a relationship, i.e., before it begins to go rapidly downhill, may thus be more effective and even contribute to preserving the relationship,” Bühler explained.
The girlfriend was ready to give her partner space and not pressure him about marriage
Commenters advised her not to panic: “Even the best relationships with the best communication need help sometimes”
However, when the woman came back with an update, all the advice seemed unnecessary
“He is a liar, coward, and a boy,” the commenters wrote

Dad was right: this guy is immature. He suddenly woke up one day and realized: 'crud! I'm an adult. I don't want to be an adult. I drifted into this relationship with a woman who loves me and now I have to start thinking about futures and stuff and I can't handle that.'. Some people just want a protracted adolescence. People might say that marriage is unnecessary or is just paper, especially if there are no plans for children, but there is more to it. Ideally, Marriage is an acknowledgement that you have thought about it and are prepared to publicly commit to someone, to try your best to be a lifelong partner to someone. Marriage isn't just drifting with the currents; it is deliberate decision and promise.
She comes off as a bit immature too. She has this ideal of marriage and nothing else fits. And to break down so much over what seemed like just a tiff ( though maybe it was more serious and she knew but didn't want to admit).

Someone so emotionally needy can be difficult to live with unfortunately. I think her boyfriend spent a long time trying to improve her self esteem but eventually decided this wasn't going to happen and couldn't stand the thought of living and having children with her for the rest of his life. Sad for both of them.
