50 Times Tourists Visited Popular Spots Only To Realize They’re Not Quite What They Imagined
Over-the-top hype is toxic! If you give in to it, you’re potentially setting your dream vacation up for failure. The fact is, no vacation spot or tourist site is exactly as you see shared on social media. There’s a pretty sizeable gap between the gorgeous illusions posted online and the atmosphere you get when you finally visit the place in person.
Getting to finally see that difference in quality and vibe is truly eye-opening. Our team at Bored Panda has collected some of the most egregious differences between what social media promises and what reality delivers, from all over the internet. Scroll down for a big taste of social media versus reality.

Okay I love this one. Its hilarious. The seagull in the back of the second picture. It's expression is pure "what ya gonna do about it, mate?"
Looks like you've been "living" exclusively on social media if you thought this was real life
icelander here, it is deep turquoise as the first picture when the sky is blue and there is sun, if you come outside summer months will always be gray and rough.
Well duh! You have to wait till the trees turn pink 🤦(/j)
That stairway to heaven looks really unsafe - ensuring a good chance you'll get there.
Wow, SHOCKING, that you are not alone in a touristy place! You want that very photo? Wait your turn in the line, and use the filters.
It's called another angle and filters. Like 100% on this post's insta-photos.
People use Instagram filters on everything. Isn't reality impressive enough?
I've watched walking tours of Santorini. It looks nice but crowded af. Some parts are a claustrophobes nightmare.
Sun angles and cloud coverage. There are photographers who know just when to take to photos based on the weather and time of day. They plan it out, and set up their camera just so. If done just right there's no need for filters. Filters does the work of months and months of a professional photographer's labour of yore.
Pretty sure you could find a pile of garbage anywhere you go.
Well yeah. Why would you post a picture of trash? There's beauty and ugliness everywhere. Would much rather see the beautiful stuff.
Again, what's your freaking problem? Pay enough to have that specific spot just for you.
Well, if you showed up at sunset after a rain storm I imagine it'd be close.
Hey, Sherlock ... would have you been thought, you are not alone on this planet?
I think a lot of people didn't understood that some of the posts weren't about landscapes, but about how social media paint a perfect picture of countries when very often the people living there are very poor and in need of financial and/or medical help. Like Egypt, Bali, Thailand... It's all "perfect" countries on social media but the reality is far from being perfect.
Isn't it weird how countries that offer cheap vacations just so happen to coincide with countries with very low living standards and dictatorial governments.
Load More Replies...Getting the perfect shot is a common goal for vacationers. You have to wait for the moment, whether it's the time of day or a break in the crowd. But these ridiculous filters ... that's just fraud!
What is wrong with people? Don’t they understand that the perfect image you see is a fabrication or taken at 0400 when there’s no one around? I know a photographer who sat in a tent up on the Cuillin Ridge, Scotland for weeks on end to get the perfect combinations of light and weather to capture his best shots, when you rock up with your iPhone and your iced coffee for ten minutes in the middle of tourist season in xyz country I guarantee your disappointment. Dolts.
