Mother-In-Law Always Snoops Around The House, So The Wife Decided To Plant A Glitter Bomb

Nobody likes it when someone snoops through their personal belongings and bills, especially when you’ve set firm boundaries for them. Unfortunately, some people are happy to trample all over your boundaries and ignore any and all of your pleas for privacy.
Redditor u/itsbettertobelucky had a very peculiar story to share with the internet. A story involving a glitter trap, a snooping mother-in-law, and lots of family drama. One redditor shared how she looked to glitter as a possible solution when her snooping MIL wouldn’t respect her boundaries
The redditor had a small update for the AITA community after her post went viral
The redditor shared how her snooping mother-in-law kept sneaking into their bedroom and office after she supposedly ‘forgot’ how to get to the bathroom. This kept happening again and again, so she installed an exterior doorknob with a lock.
However, the author’s husband didn’t believe her about her MIL’s snooping, so u/itsbettertobelucky decided to prove to him that she wasn’t just being paranoid. So she started off by covering the doorknob in fine glitter. It was very clear that the MIL had tried to do some sneaking from the state of hands, but this didn’t get her to stop. She simply wasn’t embarrassed!
So u/itsbettertobelucky decided to lay a little trap to punish the inquisitive woman. She set up a small envelope full of glitter above the door her MIL would always try to get through. The result? Priceless! Naturally, the mother-in-law blew up about the fact that she was now covered in glitter and had the stuff all over her hair.
Things got heated and the MIL even blamed the redditor for ‘ruining’ her car. Imagine having to get all the glitter out of the front seat! What a nightmare.
However, things took a surprisingly positive turn later on. After the story went viral on Reddit, the author’s husband saw it and had a good, long read through all the comments. The entire thread was an eye-opener for him and they’re both planning on starting couple’s therapy in January to work through their troubles.
What’s more, the redditor hasn’t given up on glitter as a potential solution to lots of life’s messy issues. She plans to get some biodegradable cellulose glitter for her future projects. What’s more, she’s thinking about installing a camera in her home and even printing out some fake documents to deter her MIL’s snooping.
Clearly, not everyone’s a fan of glitter. And sometimes, even law enforcement gets involved. For instance, one man from Ohio called the police after getting a Christmas card that was full of glitter. One of the officers realized that the man was the victim of a practical joke and was sent a glitter bomb card.
“However, the resident was not amused. He asked that a report of the incident be kept on file,” writes Cleveland.com.
On the flip side, glitter can be a wonderful deterrent not just for boundary-ignoring parents-in-law, but also for criminals. Former NASA and Apple engineer Mark Rober created a massive Glitterbomb to trick any heinous villains who’d like to steal your Amazon and other delivery packages. Truly, glitter is a force for good, don’t you think, dear Pandas?

Honestly, how hard is it for the husband to have a sincere talk with his own mother, telling her this behavior is not okay, and is an invasion of privacy?? Grow some balls, buddy.

His mom sounds like she might be mentally ill. She's been talked to repeatedly. Locks have been installed. She had one minor glittering before the glitter trap. Most people would knock it off before that point. They'd be embarrassed. She seems like she has very poor impulse control, might be a bit obsessed, and her husband and son have just come to accept this kind of behavior and work around it to avoid her explosions. It's their normal, but it's not normal to OP or the rest of us looking at it from the outside. I agree that it's on her husband to enforce boundaries, but it sounds like he was raised by FIL to placate her and doesn't have the tools. Enforcing boundaries is often not easy, but with someone who is mentally ill it can be a frustrating and constant slog. I'm glad they're going to therapy because maybe her husband will get some help with strategies for that.

Every time she gets up asked loudly where she is going and then advised she will be escorted as she can't be trusted. Stand outside door until finished. Then walked back to seat. She acts like an irresponsible child she gets treated like one.

Yeah - it's not really ruined. Though glitter sticks around for ages. I've just put the Christmas decorations away, didn't have anything bar a couple of cards sent to us with glitter, vacuumed three times and STILL the carpet is sparkly!! MIL will be carting glitter everywhere for months. Serves her right!

I live on my own in my bachelor pad. The thought of ANYONE even my own mother snooping through MY private stuff would annoy the **** out of me. Even when my landlord comes around for his rent he always says "I wont come in, it's your place I wont invade your privacy" and if he ever has to come in to fix something he makes a point of not opening any doors or looking in any cupboards unless absolutely necessary -And this is HIS flat I live in. If he can respect my privacy then your MIL should stay the **** out.

Everytime the mother went to leave the room i'd follow one step right behind her back, if she got weird about it I'd say she needs someone to come with her to the bathroom because she keeps forgetting where it is, and you're worried she'll just pee in the closet. I'd make an announcement when she arrived that "someone needs to be the designated peepee-goer with MIL, just like you would with a little child at McDonalds, also since she's forgetting where the bathroom is we should all have an intense discussion about having her go to the doctor for dementia, alzheimers and even stroke checkups, because she's clearly having neurological issues, maybe she shouldn't be driving a car!". Make a huge hullabaloo about it to everyone. She'd stop her sh*t then. Mindplay this bitc* back like a gaslighting master. Also, husband needs to cut the apron strings with mommy. Does she still come over for bath time to wash his winky? Jeeze.

Boundaries were clearly set, explained in detail, enforced with locks (honestly, a grown-as$ woman?), and this happens. Hubby should be standing by his partner but is probably falling into lifetime habits of whitewashing his mom's behavior. She's likely the one who taught him that... and at least he's willing to try to change. MiL is the asshole.
