Parents Stiff Babysitter Out Of Pay, Get A Reality Check After She Gains Confidence Online

Fair pay for fair work—it sounds like a simple, straightforward, and easy-to-understand concept, right? The sad reality is that there will always be some clients or organizations that try to weasel out of paying you what you’re owed. In those cases, you need to stand your ground and protect your interests.

Internet user u/SecretiveGurl went viral after turning to the AmITheJerk online community for advice. She revealed how a family that she usually babysits for suddenly tried to pay her less for her services because their baby slept through most of the evening when she was over. Naturally, this frustrated both the babysitter and a huge chunk of the internet. Scroll down for the full story. Meanwhile, Bored Panda has reached out to the author for comment, and we’ll update this article as soon as we hear back from her.

    To be clear, whether or not someone’s child was asleep or awake has no impact on the amount of money you owe your babysitter. You’re hiring them for a service—looking after your child for a specific period of time. As long as they’re doing their job, they should get paid for every hour they’re there.

    If your child has unique needs or you want to be very transparent about your expectations, then, as a parent, you should consider hiring a professional babysitter or drafting a contract with everything listed. Having a contract to fall back on might be good for the sitter, too, as it’s a clear indication of what they’re owed for their time.

    Babysitters of Boulder encourages parents to change their perspective and not to think about a babysitter’s job as something that’s ‘easy.’ The parents often approach their interactions with the babysitters from a position of power and safety, and they should be more mindful of how difficult it can be for the people they hire to interact with them in some cases.

    It is very important that everyone’s on the same page when it comes to money and expectations

    “Most of us tend to believe that we are easier to work with than we truly are. We tend to think that we communicate more clearly than we actually do. Your sitter or nanny may misinterpret your instructions, or do something that irks you in a sincere attempt to be helpful,” the organization points out.

    According to Babysitters of Boulder, when it comes to money, parents should:

    • Pay their babysitters when they book and then cancel their services;
    • Pay more when they have their babysitters supervise playdates or carpools;
    • Not ask to pay later;
    • Not forget to pay.

    The name of the game is transparency and good communication. If you keep springing surprises on your babysitter, not only are you making things more difficult for them, but you’re also harming your interests. Soon, you might develop a reputation as a difficult family to work with and fewer people will want to babysit for you.

    Meanwhile, trying to go back on your agreement with a teenage babysitter after they’ve already done what you asked is just plain unethical.

    As the woman’s post went more and more viral, people rushed to share their opinions and advice

    After reading through many people’s advice, the babysitter decided to stand up for herself. Here’s her update

    Luckily, after confiding in the AITJ online community and getting some genuinely useful advice, the babysitter decided to confront her clients and actually got what was owed her.

    “I went back to their place and firmly asked for the full payment. You gave me the push I needed. I got what I was owed and won’t be babysitting for that family again,” u/SecretiveGurl wrote in a small update.

    The author’s post went massively viral, and it just goes to show that many people can’t stand workers being taken advantage of. At the time of writing, the author’s post had 28k upvotes and also garnered a whopping 9.2k comments.

    What are your thoughts about the entire situation, dear Pandas? Have you ever worked as a babysitter? If so, what are some of the worst clients that you’ve ever had the ‘pleasure’ of babysitting for? Has a client or organization ever tried to trick you out of paying you what they owed you for your job, no matter the industry? We’d love to hear from you! Good for her! Those cheap, trashy parents don't deserve to have a sitter. It should be interesting to see if they can find one who's unaware of their little stunt and/or is willing to sit for them.

    Tell them you'll be happy to babysit for them again, but as soon as the baby falls asleep, you'll go home because you're not needed anymore. If they look stunned (as they should), you say "I was just joking! Just like you were joking when you said you weren't going to pay me the full amount!"

    Some jobs require people to be there "just in case". As pointed out, this couple had their night out and enjoyed themselves safe in the knowledge there was someone at home to look after their child. There should be no question about amount of "work" undertaken - the job is to be there, monitor and deal with any issues.

    My sister and I once were hired to take care of a toddler and a baby (they hired my sister, but the toddler had a health issue, so I had to be on-hand as well just in case). They said they were trying to get the baby to sleep through the night, so we COULD NOT let that baby sleep at all. We watched them from one or two in the afternoon until 9 pm. It seemed like a very bad way to treat a baby, so we let it sneak in a couple of naps.

    I find that reasonable and understandable. I only pay security guards for exactly the time when we are actually being attacked and when they intervene. So from “This is a robbery” to handcuffs. The rest is basically free time.

    How short sighted. The babysitter isn't home or with friends having fun. She was literally stuck at their place to make sure the baby is fine. What you pay is her to be available for the kid, that's it. Somebody lost a babysitter.

    I occasionally did weekend or week long babysitting jobs as a nanny, and had a few parents who didn't want to pay me for the time I slept. I reminded them I was still on duty. I charged them a flat fee. If they didn't want to pay, I declined the job

    I know i worry but its my children so think what you must but my children range from 7-17 the oldest had been w 2 sitters in her life, both close family, and it did not go well. I decided that babysitters wasnt for my family. Im always so worried about everyone. Are the kids ok? Is the sitter ok? Are they not ok but telling me they are?! If you can come to my home, snuggle my baby for a few mins and them fall asleep peacefully would be the only thing that would probably make me feel safe. This young lady is the only babysitter id have and id certainly pay her very well for the peace of mind. Now, she can quit. You can hire someone else. Then you can go out worrying the whole time if the babys fussing, if the sitter is losing their patience. Some people dont know a great thing/person when they got em

    When you babysit, you are paid for your time. The parents themselves wouldn't leave the house for 4 hours without a sitter, just because the baby was asleep when they left. It is a ridiculous argument - I can't even believe there is 1% that voted "somewhat understandable but still not right".

    Everyone is missing a vital point here. As a babysitter you aren't just there to play with the child, you are there in case a fire starts, or if someone tries to break in, if a storm warning is given, in other words you're there to keep the child safe! As a teenager I babysat a lot, I never had problems with people not paying me, as a matter of fact I told the parents "if you're not back by the time you said you'd be back then the rate is double" & I always got paid

    WTF? A babysitter isn't just paid to feed/change/play with the kid - they're also there to keep an eye on them and be there if anything happens! I've worked with kids, and even if I spent a good chunk of it just kind of hanging around while the kids played that's not the point! If a kid tripped over or wandered off or there was a fight, then I was there to step in and do something about it. You don't just leave kids and babies completely unguarded and unsupervised no matter what they're doing! This is completely insane and awful.
